I hope CW isn't a better recruiting coordinator than a head coach. Still stinging from 2007 and still wondering about the depth of the losses...

Hope springs eternal.

My new favorite player...

http://www.southbendtribune.com/...1204/ Recruiting

Its been a long long time, since ND has had this much talent and depth.

I wonder if 2008 will be known as the year Robert Hughes becomes a nationally known athletic commodity.

I think the Robinson commitment is great for Cwynar; I would imagine he is ecstatic to have an early enrollment wingman at the last second like this.

Anyone heard who will be applying for a 5th year yet?

Good update. Thanks.
I’m started to get excited about the big guys that can play the line, whether the DL or OL. You never know where some of them will end up.
Although I have nothing in my stocking except coal and sticks (I peeked), the BG game isn’t that far off, and winter is already beginning to get old. I need something to look forward too.

In the high-light clips for 2008, I sure would like to see a lot of special team action. Sigh.

Say is future QB Crist (?) coming in January as well? I sure would like to see JC pushed.

Is this ND's first recruit whose HS nickname is The Antlers?

Sweet!

any idea who DIDN'T attend the banquet?

I imagine it'll probably be a couple weeks before we hear about 5th years. Guys probably want to go home over the holidays and talk it out with their families. There really aren't very many options though: Brown, Lambert, Crum, Jabbie. Am I forgetting anyone else who had significant playing time in '07? I really would like to see Crum and Brown back.

The three 5th's are Brown, Crum and Lambart. Don't remember where I saw it, but the person who posted said that they were announcing them in the S.B. area news. I was a little surprised with Lambart, not so much the other two. Lambart only because gray should be ready and lots of new guys, maybe he'll be there to add leadership to the young guys and play some nickel.

Jim/redondo beach:
I don't have your football intelligence, but do you really believe that CW hasn't learned from this year and things won't be better next year? Plus, an easier beginning schedule and what seems to be an increase in talent sounds like a recipe for success. Plus, you can never undersestimate the amount of gameday experience in young players.

Of course, I tend to see things as much rosier than most, but I see a solid season and a good (and finally a win in one) bowl next year.

Again...as I picked 4-8 preseason...the losses really didn't bother me. It was the depth of those losses and the fact that CW didn't/couldn't correct "mid-stream"...as it were. He seemed incapable to change. That's what bothered me.

And yes, David, your patronization is noted...but your blind allegiance to the worst ND team in 50 years will really help now, won't it.

I like this guy Robinson. He's supposed to be really smart and a nice kid. Let's just hope he gets NASTY

he looks nasty.
god the irish need nasty in a big way.
the michigan folks seem to be thrilled with rodriguez. seems like they did well, after a lousy start to their new coach search. but it should be a 1-2 (more?) year transition for them as they switch offences/philosophies/coaching staffs. no? anybody care to opine.

It does look like UM got a great coach. They have a lot of talent right now. My only concern is how they would use the spread with Mallett at QB. If they can adjust, then watch out in 2008. One Rivals 5 star recruit put UM on his list since they hired RR.

good call MJ. That hire will be among many natural comparisons the press will look to next fall when they need to drum up readers by pulling the Irish into a story. Not to mention how interesting it will be to see that offense up against tossu and the rest of the B11. Maybe they have a hope against the Illini now, at least in football.

As for us, it truly is the best and worst of times. Let's hope three years is enough time to get a graduate degree in college football, and we start seeing the results on the field and not just in the recruiting journals. Better O line play will make every part of our game look a lot, lot better. Let's hope we get some so we don't have to come running out of the tunnel to get a win, but can come walking out, and get them all as my pappy used to say.

The first thing I thought of when I heard the Rodriguez hire was that ND's coaching staff took a little trip out to WVU to learn the offense a little. I have no idea how much that will help, but it can't hurt. At least they're already slightly familiar with the offense. I wouldn't be shocked if Mallett transfers and Terrelle Pryor chooses Michigan now.

Jimredondo beach,Perhaps you need a dose of optimism, or quit sending your negative posts. We know '07 was bad, but perhaps everyone has learned from the season. Tony S., Subway Alumni, and David, to name three seem to be able to find a positive. If you need something else read that should make you see a positive, go to Scout.com and look at the list of verbal commits under the ND dome. Yes, they are not in writing yet, but it appears they believe in CW and the Irish...why can't you?

Sorry jim, wasn't being patronizing...just from reading what you have stated in the past, it appears you know more than hacks like me.....and although I don't always agree with what you right, I find it interesting....

Jim,

Not everyone attacks others with differing points of view or try to be smarmy....it's college football, and the Christmas season, relax...sheesh

oops, two posts ago it should read "write"....good thing my wife who was an editor didn't see that!

Not to nitpick, but the Irish did not complete the initial sweep, as they also offered Dan Buckner, who commited to Texas, on that day.

Also someone mentioned the word nasty, that can be applied to Robinson, Clelland and especially Cave those three are going to bring nasty back to our O-line.

...and perhaps not, ted. let me bottom line you...this isn't the ND feelgood post...it's the ND realism post. If you don't like/want differing points of view...start your own :) post. jeeze...

"Back in September of 2006, Trevor Robinson was one of three recruits to get the first round of scholarship offers from Notre Dame."

Wasn't there a WR from Texas also offered on the first day?

Does this mean we can finally have two full offensive lines for the blue-gold game?

Buckner was offered very early on, but I'm not sure if he got on on the first day or not. But close enough I suppose to say ND went three out of four.

Ha ha that's funny. Love to see those pessimists posts. Makes you realize who the guys are that focus on the deaths and forget to notice the survivors.

ND just fielded its youngest team in the history of ND football. . . . against a schedule that Sagarin rates as the 13th hardest in the country. That means there were some 106 teams that had easier schedules.

ND's gonna be back next year. ND currently has the #1 consensus recruiting class. ND will have 3 solid years of top 10 recruits. When was the last time they did that?

You better take your cheap shots now, cause your time is running out, Mr. "Oh I'm Realist".

On the Rodriguez hire, I'm not convinced it is a good fit. Great coach, who could have stayed at WV for the next 20 years and been a local hero. Going to Michigan, all that tradition, all that recruiting base that is midwest. Rodriguez has employed the option and spread to great effect at WV but will it play at Michigan? And when they struggle, will all that tradition become too heavy a load? Just seems like a Callahan at Nebraska scenario - great coach, great offensive scheme, wrong team.

Sometimes it seems as if coaches don't know when they have a good thing going. Rodriguez at WV was a great match.

Don Nehlen has given Rodriguez his blessing and I'm sure he know more about football than me.

"Great players make great coaches"--Bear Bryant

"You cannot win without good players"--Lou Holtz

All you CW critics, wasn't CW supposed to have major defections of recruits by now?

Once again, there is absolutely NO record of jim/redondo beach predicting a 4-8 record before the season on this site - none, zero, zip.......jim, I'm tired of hearing you pat yourself on the back. Show some stones next year and put in writing bud.......

"It not X's and O's,
It's Jimmy's and Joe's."

Cwynar is the guy that I am most jazzed about, but it looks like we are going to have an incredible wealth of incoming line talent, across the board on both sides of the ball. Charlie sure deserves nothing but kudos with the way he has not only held the class together, but he's adding to it.

Regard DickRod going to Michigan, to me it's a curious marriage. His spread offense requires different types of players than Michigan teams have always been comprised of, and he will probably struggle recruiting in the midwest. He seems like a good enough guy, but his WFVU teams have been notoriously thuggish. In fact Roger Goodell's Top Two NFL Public Enemies were teammates a WFVU: Pac Man Jones, and Chris Henry.

Oh!...Mr. Feelgood...I guess ND didn't have the worst team in the last 50 years?...did I stutter?...or was it 49 years?

I'll be optimistic for 2008. I believe Jimmy Clausen's class has a very good chance to become known as super sophomores at the skilled offensive positions. QB, rusher(s), receivers and TE all have very talented AND experienced players. The OL will be experienced juniors and seniors and hopefully much improved. If not it will be another long year.

Voice,

I agree with you about Rodriguez. There was an article in the Detroit Free press talking about WVU having an academic rate of 30 to 40 percent and the reason why he landed Noel Devine and Gwaltney was that a lot of teams backed off because of questionable pasts. The personnel at Michigan does not fit his offensive philosophy, it will take at least 2 years to stock the types of players that he needs. I can not see Mallett as a spread QB and he may end up leaving. As for Weis, he is doing something right to keep this new class intact. I believe today is the target date that he said he would sit and evaluate his staff and start on the analysis of what he did wrong this year. I hope that he learns what is needed to bring back the success and build on what he has started in the recruiting world.

Coach Willingham has dismissed DC, Baer & ST coach Simmons. Both had been with him at ND & UW.
It has also been reported that three (3) defensive players, Lambert,(db) Crum,(lb) & Brown,(de)will be back for a 5th year.
If there are 14 Sr's.
24 Jr's.
18 So's +Bedmefter(sp)
That should leave 25 for this year class.
They are now at 22, maybe Walker, Page, Robinson,(kid from Az) would fill out he class,

Welcome, Trevor! Best of luck in all you do at Notre Dame and beyond!

JRB says that Charlie didn't change during the season, but that's clearly not true — after the Michigan game, he did a week of "back to basics" with full contact, and kept the contact (though somewhat scaled down) through the rest of the season, and has indicated that he plans to keep it around going forward.

The degree of improvement in other facets of the game was sporadic, certainly, and I'm disappointed that the OL never really seemed to gel, but in fairness, other teams are getting better throughout the season too; if you screw up the beginning of the season, it's not unreasonable to be unable to catch up.

Yes, Jim/Redondo appears to be a half-empty kinda guy. But our hearts and spirits were crushed this year, and a good number of us lashed out in various degrees. IMHO, it's a protection device: Don't get too hyped up, only to be deeply disappointed again. (That'll be 5 cents, Charlie Brown.) I can't fault him too much as I suspect he suffered through watching most of the games, like the rest of us fans, despite his dire prediction of the season. Throw in the fact that like me, he's surrounded by Trojans and the idiot "journalists" that write about them - it's enough to make you reach for the Prozac.

Just seems like a Callahan at Nebraska scenario - great coach, great offensive scheme, wrong team.

I don't think you can call Callahan a "great coach." Before the Nebraska hire, he was run out of town by the Oakland Raiders. His players hated him. His hiring at Nebraska never made sense for a ton of different reasons. I don't think his situation is comparable to rodriguez at Michigan. RichRod has already established that he can win in college.

Are you sure he prefers Rich, or is it Dick? I'm going to go with Dick-Rod for now - at least until I get a call from old Dickie. I'm sure he will also end up here if WVU fans have anything to say about it:

http://dickipedia.org/index.php? ...title=Main_Page.

Of course, I'm presuming WVU fans know about those internets and have access to them. I'm also assuming they would rather write a screed than burn down his new home in AA. Both of which are probably bad assumptions. Yes Dick-rod, you are a Michigan Man now. Enjoy the hate.

West Virginia is no hot bed of Notre Dame fandom...I remember in the 70s having coins thrown at our hoopsters.

Who do they pull against between ND and Michigan?

I am asking Santa for a strong offseason in the weight-room. Don't forget that some of the freshman who we saw this year who seemed to be very impressive to us have never spent time in a college weight-program. Lets hope those kids (Ian Williams, Bobby Hughes, Brian Smith, Kerry Neal, etc. etc.) pack on some muscle, and tear off some fat, and get prepared to shove some people around next year.

RE: Who the Irish will close with on the recruiting trail? It seems they are still after a DE/OLB type 1)the kid who previously committed to TAM is waivering due to coaching change and 2)another Coach Lewis contacted(Scouts). Page at OG would be nice plus another Wide Out. Can't have enough linemen. That's what creates nasty - beating on one another in practice. Or like the older crowd remembers, Coaches like Yonto grabing a facemask and pulling a player closer for
a little chat about attitude. I can remember Yonto doing that to Mike McCoy. It was so impressive I almost peed my pants. Go Irish and pick off a few more recruits. PS - Also love the comments from Goodman in the SBT.

I welcome Rich Rodriguez hire at UM weither is great fit or not. I know one thing for sure next year we will get our revenge. As most of the fans here, I was outraged by the 2007 season but I kept watching the games looking for a little spark. At the beginning I couldn't understand what was happening and I thought I was alone so I finally decide to go support the team against BC that was ranked #2 in the country. I realized that all the fans that were at the stadium were thinking the same thing but we supported the team anyway and we almost came back. The way this past season started with the QB not being clear set us behind. I am not too sure that position isn't for grab even now I guess the spring game will determine that. The team speed also was an issue, especially on offense at the start of every game except the GT game. Charlie weis said he will evaluate what went wrong this season, I think being a headcoach, QB coach, ST coach, offensive coordinator at the same time and having a young team, I like you charlie but that is a little too much. Charlie weis is a winner, winners always find ways to get back on track. Next year I have high hope that we will finally see the team charlie promised us Nasty, smart and tough. Especially with the recuits he is getting. Watch out. Go Irish

Well said, Jean.

Grandson at Washington says the players like the WillHam as he is easy but the students don't care for three losing seasons. How long will he last?

Willingham was gone the minute the UW president fired AD Turner. Unlike ND, UW wouldn't pay the $2,000,000 buyout and will wait until after next season when the buyout is under $1mil. The NAACP was also getting involved.

Do you think TW goes into these positions with the thought that if he does poorly he'll still make millions if he's fired and will be able to play more golf...if that's possible? Kinda like the football equivalent of The Producers, Max Bialystock?

Welcome, Trevor.

I hope everyone has seen the video that Rivals has of Trevor. The kid is an absolute monster. Everybody he blocks just gets thrown to the ground, hard.

Now let's fire Latina to get someone to develop these guys.

Update at UW:

Willingham was forced to fire several assistants including defensive coordinator Kent Baer. Guess who interviewd for Baer's job today??

BOB DAVIE!!!
