Charley,

Beat SC or beat it out of town.

Everybody's got an opinion, even my daughter.

Coffin, meet nail. Charlie is finished.

I read some comments from Claussen`s interview during the week.Is he for real? Is he about Notre Dame or himself? The comments he made sound like a person out of touch with how many millions of people are interested in Irish football.

Lucy for coach.

Players reflect their coach. It's Weis who doesn't get it.

Read the quotes from Golden, Sam Young, and Jimmah; they've already given up the ghost. It's sickening to say, but our best hope for the future of ND football is for USC to drop 70 on us, and for the team to get blown out by a MAC team in some december Toilet Bowl (that is, assuming ND is shameless enough to accept a bid).

I'm very sad. I liked Weis despite his prickly persona, but now I just want him out of there ASAP.

# 00 Subway Alumni - Sr. - Armchair QB
"I’m thinking hard some NFL team owner with real deep pockets will be stupid enough to buy out Charlie’s contract. They’ve done a heck of a lot dumber things."

Let me refocus the comment thread for a moment.

If, somehow, ND comes out and upsets Southern Cal, how will that change your current state of mind?

We need a running QB as the rest of the world seems to have.

I don't think an upset over USC would change my mind, though it would probably secure him 1 more year.

I was at the game, and it looked like the snowballs were geared toward the NBC timeout guy. A few missed the mark and hit the players who probably should have moved from the field of fire.

CW still going on 4th down and the package when he brought in aldrige was an obvious run most of the time. Clausen looked real bad taking big sacks at bad times and going for the fade routes when they only needed 10 to get in field goal range. D couldn't stop the run. Offense looked real bad and very predicatable.

please stop trying to run a pro program at the college level, stop playing for 25 points, and a win. please play kids who want to play, no more "when we develop" mentality. no emotion from the coach, a great man, but not a college coach.

Can anyone fill me in on the 'toegate' call from this game (mentioned in the "Karl Marx, Wrong Again" post).

I missed large portions of the game and am curious what the situation was this time. Not trying to lay blame at the refs. The Irish should have been so far ahead that refs couldn't have impacted the outcome. I'm just curious as there is no way that Navy player should have been ruled in bounds and want to know how similar it was this week.

Thanks.

Go Irish. Dump Charlie.

Thanks for the post, Jay. One thing I will take away from that stadium for a long time was the sight of the Syracuse team standing in the midst of the band as the Alma Mater was played. They were motionless and silent. Class act Coach Robinson. Good luck.

Granted I have not been able to seem most of the games this year, but what I have seen has been very disappointing. I think that even with an upset win over USC, Charlie is still on very thin ice.

My reading of the situation:

if we get spanked by SC there is a decent chance (maybe 50%) that they will find a way to get him to resign before the bowl game.

If we somehow manage to win, he gets another year. However, the performance in the bowl game will set the tone for next season. If we manage to beat SC and cotton / gator come looking at us again (which i find unlikely), we will probably lose yet another bowl and CW will start the 09 season on the hot seat. That is not how you want to begin a season.

I am hoping that even if we beat SC we turn down a bowl game, unless it is a shit bowl that we have a chance of winning. I hate that this is my attitude, but frankly i don't see this team ever "getting up" to compete in a bowl game against a team with equal or better talent....

I guess that last statement is a confirmation of how little faith I now have in CW

We need to dump Weis. Hire THE CHIMP.

.

Better yet Jay.

We lose to MSU and USC. 10-2, go to a New Year's Day, Bowl, win it. Where do we all stand now?
All this was possible before the meltdown at NC.

I watched yesterday and realized we're really not much better than last year. Big difference, Mike Floyd. We don't have a running game because the OL under performs. After watching a few moments of the Harvard/Yale game I was reminded of ND. Ridiculous! Outrageous! I believe this whole process and the future of ND football is in the hands of Swarbrick at this time. Jack make the necessary changes to make ND competitive. You owe that to the players.

@ Jay

If we beat SC, that's on SC. It doesn't change my oppinion of Weis, because, unlike some, my oppinion of Weis was developed over the last 2 to 3 years. For some reason some people can't see what a poor coach he is--maybe it's the emerald colored glasses. I don't know. What I do know is that CW can't develop talent, can't prepare for big games, and can't call a good game versus a decent college opponent. None of that changes if the stars align and we magically beat SC.

If, somehow, ND comes out and upsets Southern Cal, how will that change your current state of mind?

I'm struggling to comprehend even the fundamental premise of this question.

who does everyone want to replace charlie? i want the chimp, obviously, but ive also heard brian kelly.

.

Did somebody forget to tell Arthur Jones that kids as big as he is aren't supposed to charge around with the dexterity of an all-American cornerback?
That guy played like an absolute beast yesterday. I'm going to have nightmares about him all winter.

If Charley beats SC he stays, that was my delusional bargain with him.

But.. he is not a CFB HC. Different game than the NFL. You don't need years to develop a running game. Look at Georgia Tech this year. Charley does not get it. Period. If he did, we'd have a running game. Tell him to read Lou's book, and as far as all the great recruits, where are the performances on the field????

and stop with the bring your kid to work day stuff.

and btw when will the genius' in the admin stop hiring guys wo experience for the job???

Remember they ran Lou out of town after a 2nd loss on the season to Air Force.

My have times changed.

You see sub, there you have it. That's why I was almost hoping we would complete the travesty by losing yesterday. A win would have been used as an excuse by Weis and others to avoid the axing that needs to take place. Now, I think its easier. And the only real question will be who scores the most points, SC's defense or the Notre Dame offense? I will take SC on that bet. Dilemma avoided. However, if the bubonic plague or some form of airborne herpes (more likely given that its SC) strikes our opponent's entire roster next week and we somehow eke out a win, it would not change my analysis at all. CW is not the guy for the job. My real concern is finding the right scenario for a transition with the least damage. I agree with Mike Coffey that this next hire needs to be a proven program builder at the college level. Who is that guy and is he even available? Maybe someone falls into our laps, but that is very, very unlikely. Prepare for the fun of the next 12 months, its going to determine whether we get this program back to competitive status in the next 5 years. I would just like to see us win a NC before I retire. During the last one I was finishing HS. Is that sad or what?

Lucy knows best.

Just a thought...

I was living in L.A. when Paul Hackett was fired at USC. That program was a mess and nobody wanted the job. USC was contacting who were declining the chance to even interview. Pete Carroll was like their 7th choice. And, if I recall correctly, he contacted them to ask for the chance to interview.

That's worked out okay. Point is, we're a mess and, if Charlie goes, it might not seem like the right guy is out there waiting and is there for the taking. But the right guy is out there.

Problem is, we've had 3 Paul Hacketts in a row. Can we afford another taking a leap and ending up with #4?

This is when I knew the game was over:

Special teams star Mike Anello made the first big play of the game, stripping Syracuse punt returner Ryan Howard after an Irish three-and-out to start the game. John Ryan recovered the fumble for Notre Dame and Walker converted a 34-yard field goal attempt to give Notre Dame a 3-0 lead less than four minutes in.

After a missed field goal by Syracuse, the Irish drove into Syracuse territory again, but the drive stallel when James Aldridge was stopped for a loss on 4th and 2 at the Syracuse 35.

Even a win at USC will not change the equation, as if that is even in the realm of possibility. Charlie can't coach. It's simple. And you don't need a big name to replace him. Just someone with some college experience and an ability to inspire.

Let me show my ignorance. Who is the Chimp?

Santayana was right about those who forget the past being doomed to repeat it. After Faust was fired and Holtz hired, Gene Corrigan said, "We needed someone who had been there before."

The tradition, the expectations, everything about Notre Dame means that it cannot, it should not, be the first high-level head coaching job. The last time that worked for us, it was Knute Rockne 90 years ago.

Whomever the University selects to replace Charlie, they need to get someone who has demonstrated the ability to run an effective program as a head coach. Let another university be the transition point for a hot coordinator. We need someone battle tested in that role, not someone learning how to be a head coach.

By my count, ND has underperformed every game since at least the USC 06 game. That is 25 straight games of bad coaching. I watch other games and teams play up to their talent. He should go even if ND beats SC.

What about David Cutcliffe? Think he'd leave Duke for ND? He was almost our OC when Weis was first hired, correct?

He made Ole Miss competitive in the SEC. Although his record wasn't that great he did take to the Cotton Bowl. He tutored Eli Manning (actually both Mannings as he had Peyton at Tenn) and also had prolific offenses. He's turned Duke from a doormat into, well, something far less than a doormat. And he's got head coaching experience.

Any new coach should only get a 3 year contract. That is how long it takes to show an up or down trajectory. Weis' is decidedly down. He got a pass this year since he had bad recruits last year. With this talent, the team should be at least 10-2 and going to a BCS Bowl instead of the Sun Bowl (probably).

Anyone else notice this near the beginning of the telecast? As some ND players were running out onto the field, many others were still making their way down the stairs from the lockerroom. I was thinking, 'what the hell kind of team is this?'

I also think it's arrogant and delusional of fans/alumni to suggest a team not accept an invitation to a bowl that is for some reason deemed to be "beneath" the school/program. These are college kids, if they get invited then sobeit, let them have a fun trip and who knows, maybe they play well and win. I never hear fans of other schools talk about not accepting bids, but I hear it alot with ND. Not baiting, I'm a big fan in fact.

Here's another post-game quote for you.

"I didn't feel any emotion on the sideline," said Irish receiver Golden Tate, who posted 146 yards and two touchdowns. "Even I was kind of just, eh."

Why even bother conjecturing about a victory next week? This team is done.

Glad to read that BGS has finally gone beyond the facade of diplomacy. Weis sucks at everything in college coaching except for recruiting and being buddy buddy with superstar quarterbacks. ND should not worry about hiring internet proclaimed "slick willys" like Brian Kelly because Weis is the slickest one of all. Just watch that 60 Minutes profile from 2006.

It's almost like the Pitt, Navy and Syracuse collapses have been planned-they were too perfect. Maybe BGS can put a Weis tenure countdown clock under the Four Horsemen...

Actually, SC wanted Mike Rielly but he could not get out of his Chargers contract. SC is going to run the ball on the Irish and the game could be over by the end of the first quarter.

The quotes from Tate are amazing. He sounds selfish and, unfortunately, nothing like a leader. I had the sense in 2005 that Weis was hard-nosed with the team. Is this a matter of double standards for star players, or is this the result of Weis softening his approach this season?

Even the quote from Weis about getting the team up for next week was unconvincing. The best quotes I have seen came from Toryan Smith. Something like, "if you can't get up for the USC game, stay in South Bend."

Mike Riley is the guy! He's done it a couple of times out west and wasn't so bad at San Diego, being saddled with Ryan Leaf.
That would be a shame if Tate is not a team guy, but I don't think Ricky Waters was a team guy either.
Can we bulk up Anello and have him play Oline next year!

Before everybody jumps on Tate for one line from a longer interview, I'd recommend watching his postgame interview. Clearly, he's pained and disappointed with the loss.

Also, I have a hard time bagging on a guy who had 7 catches for 146 yards, two touchdowns (and one more called out), and made the catch that set up a potential winning field goal.

From Golden Tate, in the post-game quotes:

On the difference between Charlie Weis and Mike Heywood calling plays...

"I haven't really thought about the difference in the play calling. They're both offensive geniuses as far as I know. They both call terrific plays and I just need to execute my plays a little better."

Jay, you are right that I should not base my comments on one opinion. The above quote is more encouraging.

It is so frustrating to watch the Irish lose games that it seems they should win. The MSU loss seemed like ND just made some mistakes and lost to a more disciplined and experienced team. It seemed unlucky, perhaps. I just want to see some words from the team that make me think each member of the team is taking personal responsibility. Tate has played well on offense, yesterday included, but a player can always do more.

The Syracuse team did make a classy move at the end of the game. Coach Robinson was being interviewed when the band started playing the alma mater. He stopped the interview and asked his team to be quiet during the song, which they all did. At the end of the alma mater, they picked up the interview. Best thing that happened during that game.

On one quote, that is, not one opinion. And now I apologize for messing up the page mark-up.

i would like to see nd crush usc and weis get another huge contract extension.

As far as this 2008 season with one more game to go, there are three things that temper my disappointments, frustrations and disgustions like most of you should...

No. 1: We beat Michigan at home with our legendary coach as a very important guest. Our best game this year.
No. 2: ND’s 2009 recruiting class looks pretty good. Bottom 5 of top-10 is satisfactory even though we’re short of big body needs at DL..
No. 3: Couple of seniors graduate after this season and young players will have the opportunity to compete for open positions.

Whatever happens between the end of season and the LOI day in February, this will not be an easy decision for Mr. Swarbrick. He’ll do what’s best for Notre Dame and Weis’ conscience will follow that.

Let’s hope the 2009 recruiting class stays together till the signing day.

No matter what happens, we should remain support ND all the way.

After watching the class exhibited by Coach Robinson and his tea, I am certain that the Syracuse administration has made the same hasty mistake that ND fans seem so intent on making now.

Mespo...Hasty? He's lost 10 games twice in 4 years and is on the verge of a 9 loss season this year. Come on, just because the guy stops his interview to listen to the song doesn't mean he should stay on as the head coach.

ps. Time to let Chucky go.

VicPaul:

From 1987 until 1992 Virginia Tech's Football Head Coach Frank Beamer never won more than 6 games in any season and won only 2 games in two of those years, and 3 games in another. Since then he has never missed a bowl game and has about a .850 winning percentage. He played for the national Title once and has been consistently a top twenty Program. Think being hasty always works? Think Notre Dame would trade for those numbers of the past 15 years?

Anybody think Charlie is a big enough ass to pull out the green jerseys for the SC game?

As I watched (and cursed at) the game, I thought it would be great if our guys could get as excited about playing in Notre Dame stadium as the Syracuse players obviously were. Maybe someday.

mespo

that is when he decided to cheat

belocki:

There no evidence of that beside your rather unlettered statement.

Whee...yeah, let's hire someone of Beamer's ilk. We don't have enough of bringing in highly-touted quarterbacks and then letting them not develop on the sidelines, or no running backs, and even we could bring in some lousy receivers. Then we can hope and pray that we somehow pull the wool over everyone's eyes because we can eke through a few wins with blocked punts and field goals. Hooray for Beamer Ball! It did so well for us this year!!! Awesome! Great choice.

Also, is there another Vick out there that he could bring to Notre Dame? Can we set up some dog fighting pits outside B-P? I mean, the student center is right there, right? That'd be great! I know McDonald's isn't right close to campus, so maybe the players would have to drive a little way in order to pull guns on other kids, but hey, who cares? It's Beamer Ball, baby!!!

Someone mentioned Cutcliffe at Duke. I don't know about that. On one hand, yeah, he's changed the attitude at Duke, but this is still a team that was +5 in turnover ratio in the first and still trailed at halftime to a rather subpar Va Tech squad. And by rather subpar, I mean godawful.

Still, he does have a proven track record with developing quarterbacks and there is a buzz around Duke for something other than basketball and pregnant strippers, which is a change.

I'm going to throw up in my mouth a little bit over this suggestion, but no matter how nauseated it makes me, I think the guy is a sound coach with a good offensive mind: Steve Logan, the OC at BC, who did have a head coaching gig at East Carolina before he got kind of screwed by the administration.

What about Tim Murphy from Harvard:

http://www.gocrimson.com/ViewArt...8& Q_SEASON=2008

VT relaxed their academics to an unheard of level to get players from the tidewater area. its a fact. plenty of deals are cut in that area with hs coaches to get players. VT has 3-4 bogus majors designed specifically for athletes. thats why beamer won.

I had a mini-epiphany earlier today about finding a successful coach for a big time program. Not a name, mind you, but rather a formula, a template if you will. This might get long. Sorry.

Look at mid-major conferences. These conferences all typically have middle of the road talent from a recruiting perspective (rankings, etc.). Basically, they lose out on recruits who get offers from the major conferences (and ND), and fight each other over who gets the next tier players. But bottom line is that they all have just about the same level of talent, unless the program is just no good at recruiting.

With this in mind, look at the mid-major teams that have had at least 2 years of solid success in their conference, especially if they have been undefeated in conference and at least competitive (if not successful) playing against bigger, ranked teams who thought they were getting a patsy game.

These programs are lead by coaches who (1) are very good at teaching fundamentals, (2) have good offensive/defensive schemes to work with, and (3) can motivate the student athletes to work hard every day in practice and on Saturday to achieve their best. Think about this. If they can sustain success with a team that has no more talent than the other teams it is beating in its conference, that is a significant sign that the coach is the value-added part of the program. These are the coaches that need to be snatched up. These are the coaches that will make a difference no matter what level they are coaching. See Urban, see Tressel, see Ara (for a long-ago example of this working for ND).

Don't go for the one-hit wonder who happened to have a good year which can be explained away in so many different ways. Look for a body of work that includes consistent success in the context of an all-things-being-equal conference like the MAC, Mountain West, etc. (arguably also the Big East and ACC, depending on what you think of those conferences in football).

ND had it right when they targeted Urban (much as it might pain others here to hear that, both for having missed out as well as for the vitriol posters here have exhibited toward him). Because it is clear that we will have CW for at least one more year, JS needs to start the clock now looking at these coaching opportunities. Look not at who is hot now, but who has been hot (or who is warming up significantly) over the last few years, keep an eye on them for the next year or two, then pounce when no one else is looking. Watch Ball St. for the next year or so. Watch Cincinnati for the next year or two. Watch BYU for the next year. Watch Fresno St. Watch Nevada (oh dear lord, please not game 1 next year). If these programs sustain success for a while under the same coach, that coach will be the one to look for when the trigger is finally pulled.

Big time program experience is not required. Being the value-added piece to a D1A program of any size is the key.

At least it would seem so.

Again, just had this epiphany this morning, so am working it out of my head through this post. Hopefully it makes some sense.

And for the record, there is no way in hell we beat SC this weekend. Even if the SC defense stalls (which is what I rosily suggested earlier might be a key to an ND upset), it is painfully clear that the ND offense will be unable to run the ball or pass protect enough to make a difference. Not against that team. It won't be 37-0, but probably not far off.

@#$%&

I meant "Even if the SC OFFENSE stalls ...". Sorry.

The only game we seemed really fired up for this year was Michigan, which not so coincidentally was the game that Lou Holtz was honored. Any chance he said a few words to the team that day that was a little more inspiring than whatever else they are hearing?

Yeah, Charlie and his teams are going to roll into LA and beat a daunting opponent.

And - when the final is 57 - 6, Charlie will get a load of apologists, the tough break of no Michael Floyd, Ty's poor recruiting, and the "lack of experience" on this, his 4th or 5th recruited class.

Let's see if we can add another 3 or 4 years to Charlie's contract. I really feel that if we allow him to settle in, to know that Notre Dame is a great place to "learn" how to coach, that we'll see great improvement.

Maybe it's just me, but the Irish really seemed to have some 'swagger' in their step versus long-time rival Navy, and traditional power Syracuse.

Just be patient friends! His record is still better than Ty's (for a coupe more days) and he'll be within a game of Bob Davie come next week!

Bail out Charlie! Bring Back the Pride!

(USC -- help us get this scumbag out of South Bend!)

Matt J:

I know you really don't want to get into a battle over transgressions by a few football players and/or boosters do you? The name "Kim Dunbar" comes to mind for some reason.

belocki:

This easing of standards and so-called bogus majors at VT is awfully easy to charge but has there been any news or blog article anywhere exposing such a fact, or is it just a convenient thing for you to say.

not sure how charlie pulls out green for an away game

uUM did have six TOs in that game, right?

Wow, you sure silenced my criticism of Beamer and his lack of fielding good, offensively minded teams with Kim Dunbar, didn't you? Excellent use of logic and truth and wisdom and staying on the subject. Oh, no, wait...bait and switch. When someone points out the glaring errors in your logic, through out a long-dead hot button topic. Well done, mespo...well done. Here's a slow clap for your contribution.

Watching ESPN, and clearly the college football mentality is say anything stupid, feign concern about student-athletes, and make sure the thug atmosphere is the order of the day. When Digger knew the winds were changing, he stopped bemoaning the lack of integrity, took TV cash, and went with the flow. Weis comes in, bellows about how he knows the ND standards, but still will win, and it is obvious that his NFL mind is no match for emotion of college football. Like everyone, I want Lindsey Nelson on Sunday morning,'after failing to sustain a drive, MSU punted to Notre Dame'. Another blowout, kids graduate, and the evils are averted once more. Today, either we face the fact that the only seperation between church and state is speed, or we return the NBC money, hire another good guy, and win against the likes of other academic schools. Weis gets the Nelson factor, but by now, the "killer class' should be the cornerstone to brighter days. I see mass transfers by spring, and a program in need of some honesty. No one will watch with his heart more than me on Sat., but this is clearly time to move on. joso433@yahoo

Matt J:

I simply asked you to prove your acerbic and defamatory allegation with something beyond your rather slow-witted opinion. Kim Dunbar was a well publicized and documented counter-example to your implied assertion that ND was immune from this sort of thing. Sorry to have to spell it out for you, but one would hope that a student at one of America's premier universities wouldn't need all this spoon-feeding. My mistake-- what's your "non-bogus" major? I will guess rhetoric and debate.

joe sophy:

"Today, either we face the fact that the only separation between church and state is speed...."
*********

Marvelous writing!

Matt J:

On your point about Beamer being unable to field "good, offensively [sic] minded teams...," here's a math question: Which is better Beamer's .850 winning percentage over 15 years, or the last three Notre Dame coaches' winning percentage of .583? By the way in 2007 (Beamers' worst year) his offense did drop to 100 out of 119 teams. Number 119 was, you guessed it, Notre Dame.

Watch on Saturday, and be honest in admitting that J. Brown, Kuntz, Crum, Lambert, K. McCarthy, are same as Tom Z, Kory Minor, Powlus, Randy Kinder. I'm saying they did not progress from highly touted to killer seniors. Not all Charlie's fault, but his players are not the "nasty" he referred to on his hiring. Now see Clausen, Young, MacNeil, I. Williams to name a few, becoming part of that group. When an ESPN scrawl informs he'll call plays vs Navy, when the offense is awful, please put the ego aside. I apologize for using ESPN as a reference, they must be salivating about Sat., but Weis needs to reclaim his senior year passion, we are not the NFL, thank God, and stop worrying about his reputation. Here's hoping Nwanko, Hafis, Filer and others are players, not hype. As for the network, a piece on alledged drug use in the NBA, by noted scholar Josh Howard, would be great, narrated by Stewart Scott, written by Steven A.! Nah, not the right image. Go Irish, joso433@yahoo
