It frightens me that Walker beats Burkhart in all the shoot-outs and all the kicking contests between them.
I guess the only thing more frightening is seeing one second on the clock, ND calling time out, down by two and Walker trotting onto the field. Subway Alumni | Email | Homepage | 10.10.08 - 5:23 pm | #

Walker connects every time, gets good trajectory, and has good distance. The only thing he lacks is accuracy.
Burghart does NOT connect every time, and has inconsistent trajectory. Unfortunately his accuracy is therefore irrelevant. (Hell he doesn't even connect every time on kickoffs!)
Walker reminds me of me.
I play golf to a two handicap on the practice range, ten strokes better than I play on the course.
Hopefully he gets out of the funk, or starts with a few shots of Patron to calm his nerves. Whatever works... okiedomer | Email | Homepage | 10.10.08 - 6:57 pm | #

He's perfect on extra points this year, and missed only one last year. Some of them just sneak in, mind you. Joe Subway | Email | Homepage | 10.10.08 - 10:27 pm | #

When he misses: "Right in the lunmberyard.".
This isn't Russia, is it, Brenda?
It's Brandon.
Whatever.It's Brenda when you're 1 for 7. Gulags, ho.
Seriously, though, I wish the kid luck. DCDomer | Email | Homepage | 10.11.08 - 12:04 am | #

Drew: There is a coverage map on the NotreDameFans.com blog. I'm in Colorado and I'm getting the USC game as well. However, we can both get the game on ESPN gameplan, which is what I'm going to be doing.

I never saw the movie. I am now putting it on my list. Very funny. Thanks Jay. Maybe Walker does not take enough drugs. Are there any drugs for accuracy? ;>)) GB | Email | Homepage | 10.11.08 - 2:49 am | #

A good friend used to play for the Cowboys in the 80's, he was a receiver and held for field goals.
His commentary is interesting. If the miss is distance, it is the fault of the kicker. If the miss is to the right or left the fault resides with the hold.
Anyone ever look into who is holding for Walker, and if this is contributing to his issue? The kid certainly seems to have the leg strength.

I don't give a shit what happens in practice. Burkhart should get a chance. Some people step up under pressure. We have nothing to lose at this point. true2nd | Email | Homepage | 10.11.08 - 9:32 am | #

true2nd, you are wrong. What happens in practice does count for much in the decision who plays. It is easy for an armchair coach like you to second guess every decision. The coaching staff wants to win games, and they will make the decisions about who plays based on the sum of everything that goes into such a decision. tednict | Email | Homepage | 10.11.08 - 9:49 am | #

false.
Burghart can't even get the ball "up" sometimes (see kickoffs). That's all we need, instead of missed FGs, let's give up 7 points on the blocked kick!? okiedomer | Email | Homepage | 10.11.08 - 10:55 am | #

Walker has reportedly blown away Burkhart during kicking competitions in practice so he has earned his spot. that being said, if Walker keeps failing to come through, shouldn't Burkhart at least get a chance, regardless of what happens in practice?
i trust the coaching staff to trot out the guy that they believe has the best chance of coming through. maybe the fact that they keep putting Walker out there says more about Burkhart than it does about Walker... Schultz | Email | Homepage | 10.11.08 - 11:58 am | #

People...seriously. "Shouldn't Burkhart get a chaaaaance?!" NO!
If you squib every field goal in practice, you're not going to suddenly be given the gift of Elam and kick every one down the middle in the game.
What a dumb idea. Especially against North Carolina. who has good special teams. Patches O'Hoolihan | Email | Homepage | 10.11.08 - 12:06 pm | #

jk'72, that's an oversimplification. It may be true that left/right misses are often the fault of the holder in the NFL, where the inaccurate kickers have mostly been washed out, but I hesitate to blame Maust for most of Walker's misses, especially when I've seen multiple guys who have kicked before saying that Walker's form is bad. I compare the placekicker situation to a quarterback "controversy"
Scenario: Team losing big during the season, QB throwing lot's of picks. Second stringer comes in and saves the game. I don't care what kind of accuracy the QB throws in practice, the 2nd stringer should get the starting spot.
