night game pics always look better.

anybody else have the same feeling of deja vu last sat night, particularly during the run-only drive in Q3? you know, a feeling like it was 1989 all over again. when the irish ran roughshod over whomever they faced. when you expected them to slaughter inferior teams. when you couldn't wait for the next offensive possesion.

ah, that was nice.

There's a Washington offical site pic of the Washington band. How old are those cymbal players?

And the Seattle Times pic of the Washington swim team cheering from the sidelines in their speedos is just plain disburbing.

That Kuntz pic is something, but the defensive play I remember most was the Brian Smith sack. The stadium was buzzing after that one.

It reminded me of the hits Clausen and Sharpley took last year. . .

That was a great hit. I can't believe Fouch held on to the ball.

Pat Forde sucks.

Well, one day l decided
to make my own crawdad.
And l threw it in a pot,
without the water, you see?
And it was just like makin' popcorn.

It was a cupcake win.
Why weren’t we clever enough to schedule these guys at the beginning of last year?

At the beginning of last year they'd have beaten us.

That picture is nice. That Brian Smith sack is crazy. Even the ball was screaming "Dont hurt me"!!

I see they ran another successful fake punt with Harrison Smith eating up the real estate. Couldn't happen to a nicer Ty.

I remember thinking that as well. He has what a Boston southie friend of mine used to refer to as 'gription.'

They're taking recommendations for "The Shirt" 2009 edition.
Let's flood them with "Notch It" for Baby "J" to watch the games.
http://media.www.ndsmcobserver.c...y- 3512263.shtml

I have been really impressed with the play of Sam Young. He seems to throw the key block on every big play.

I really hope they're not taking theme nominations for The Shirt. The last thing "design by committee" needs is more committee.

After the Brian Smith hit the two Husky fans in front of me left. lol. We shook hands and I told them to keep their chins up. Was it only last year we were them?????? I can not wait for this Pit game.

Nice game by Sam Young. Actually the O-line as a whole, but good to see the big guy getting out in space and laying the wood. I played right guard in middle school and always had the most fun on plays where I'd get to pull. I loved running full speed into some unsuspecting linebacker. Looks like Sam's got the same love. Go Irish!

The defense really was impressive. They struck fear into the Husky offense from the first possession on and didn't let up all night. They can play that way for the rest of the season, I don't see how the Irish lose the rest of the season. Yes, I'm including the USC game, they've shown themselves to be vulnerable against both Oregon State and Arizona, two teams that are not quite as talented as Notre Dame.

Anyway, as great of a game as it was to watch, it was awkward to cheer. I was sitting just to the right of the Notre Dame section, surrounded by disgrunted Husky fans who looked like they were about one big play away from slitting their wrists. After halftime, at least half of them had left and not come back and they continued to stream out throughout that dominant 3rd quarter. As a matter of fact, right after that massive Brian Smith sack, I involuntarily shot up and pumped my fists before Smith even hit Fouch. Right after the hit did occur, my entire row stood up and left and I felt even worse for celebrating.

Oh well, a win's a win.

I took pictures all night, but I had a new telephoto lens on my camera and was still getting used to it, so not all of them turned out so great. Still, here's a few good ones:

Keys to the ND-Pitt Game:

http://irishbandofbrothers.blogs...burgh- game.html

You are too nice, Nate. No mercy!:)

I've uploaded 1978 Pitt/ND highlights from the original ABC broadcast for anyone interested.

http://www.veoh.com/videos/ v1638...6389627bnhjtgD3

Thanks tjnd88 for the great video highlights. Pretty fun watching it. Should be a similar back and forth game this week - with similar results (I hope.)

For the monogram folks: Fr. Riehle died this morning. He was 83

Father Riehle was an absolutely wonderful man and noboby loved ND football more than him.

I was at the '78 game. Was one of the greatest games I ever saw. I couldnt believe how loud the stadium got, you couldnt hear the person next to you.

The fans didn't need the same color shirt back then. All that was required was lungs, a voice box, and a few drinks.

The same would still work today!

Nate!

Are you serious about winning out the rest of the season? (I realize you mean if the defense plays the way they did against Washington.) The defense looked great because they were playing Washington. Period. I hope I'm wrong, but the D won't look nearly as impressive against Pitt, BC, and USC. Always have to take the competition into consideration, my friend. (Remember Victor Abiamari and his "breakout games" against Stanford? Following that game, I would always think he was ready to live up to the hype--then he wouldn't have another multi sack game until the Cardinal rolled around again.)

Congratulations to Notre Damer Brad Lidge and the Phillies. Hopefully, Jeff Samardzija and the Cubs will be in the same position in the next few years.

Onwards to the sport of kings and Pitt & BC. I was happy to read today that the BC game will start at 5:00 PST. It would have been very hard to be at work if it was a day game. MSU and BC to me are the biggest games of the year and the gauge to the direction of the program at this time.

Jimmy rules!

Why is the NCAA Women's College Cup
soccer championship always in Cary, NC? The NCAA should move it around like basketball. The current set up gives UNC an unfair advantage. A moving championship site would give Irish fans around the nation a better chance to support this outstanding program.

I would just like to point out that the "Nate" who went to the UW game and took the pictures (Nice, by the way) is not me, the "Nate" that gets up in the wee hours (3:30 AM start for me for the Pitt game, UGH!) and comments, occaisionally. Great name and all that, just don't want a few of the regular guys I talk to to get confused...

Crap...I just realized that I didn't specify I was the "Nate" in Japan, so I'm sure people will wonder why the heck I'm up at 3:30 AM for the Pitt game. Wonder no more.

Man, it's wild to watch Aldridge in those highlights and think that it was just a month and a half ago that he didn't get a SINGLE CARRY in the opener. If sharing out carries between Aldridge, Allen, and Hughes is the biggest hurdle Weis and Haywood are going to face, I'll take it.

John -

CA and Haywood wish they could have such s problem. As southbendblarney noted above, we weren't playing against college-level competition. As I've been saying all season, this collection of running backs is in the pantheon of Irish runners. The UW scrimmage allowed them to showcase, BUT, their speed tends to "slow" when we go into actual games.

It's known throughout the game that this Irish team will be pass, pass, pass - and, maybe you think they might run! CW's an NFL man, and it seems that he's bought the Don Shula philosophy of "if you have a god at qb, screw the run game." There's no indication at this point that we'll be giving much more than an afterthought to the run game anytime soon.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but I think we'll drop either Pitt or BC (probably BC). We have kept improving, though. Hopefully there's some DL clout set to come on board.

I'm cautiously optimistic about our improving running game and the team in general. Yes, the Pat Fordes of the world are correct that we haven't beaten anyone (yet) with a pulse, and some of the naysayers on this thread are correct to point out that the run game has looked competent only against inferior competition. But my God, the improvement (on offense) over 2007 is stunning when you look at the numbers. We're on track for the biggest offensive turnaround in more than a decade (so I read). I used to be baffled by our O-line's suckitude; now I think it was mostly due to inexperience. I believe we'll continue to see slow but steady improvement with the run. Together with the overall youth on this team, I'm practically giddy with excitement thinking about the next 2 years.

In general the backs seem to be running 'hard' - with punch, trying to hammer tacklers - in a way we haven't seen in awhile. In general, it seems to me you can feel the play of this team rising to its potential.

I see that, too, indy. You can tell that the team is TRYING to impose its will on other teams. They might not have figured out how to do that consistently yet, or might not be able to against stronger competition, but they are trying and it shows against inferior competition. Name one game last year where we even TRIED to impose our will, and maybe the Stanford game sticks out. This year and last year are night and day, and hopefully we see similar improvement between this year and our NC run next year.

southbendblarney - Yes, I realize that the defense was playing against the god-awful Washington offense and had a chance to tee off in a way that they really haven't so far this season, but my main contention about the defense is that their struggles weren't so much to do with talent and scheme, but with attitude. They're young, and a lot of times, young defenses struggle until their attitude becomes one of "you're not going to run, you're not going to pass. Period."
Watching the Irish D play on Saturday, that was the attitude that they carried the entire game. I don't care how pathetic U-Dub's offense was coming into the game, you have to put up a pretty special effort defensively to hold a team to 56 yards and four first downs for 54 minutes (those last 6 with the scrubs in against the Huskies starting offense don't really count, in my book). I'm not necessarily saying that they're going to hold everyone to 56 yards or anything like that, but I think that the defense has finally woken up and realized that they're faster, stronger and more athletic than they had previously thought, and the numbers for the rest of the season will reflect that. The defense will start keeping ND in games instead of holding back the tide.

Or, at least I hope so. I've been wrong before...

BTW- Nate(in Japan), I'll post with my last initial from now on, to clear up confusion.

I apologize for bringing the subject back to Willingham, but felt the need to back up my previous post regarding sports writers and their perception of ND. This came out this morning. Barf alert!

Chris Dufresne must love being the guy who runs in and rips open the scab.

Well how about that, the Irish Playa Hatas Ball is still in full swing. To hell or Michigan with them. Go Irish!

I have never before seen a horrible coach who had so many rabid supporters. Honestly, it's mind-boggling. "Yes, he's no good as a coach. But Notre Dame should have let him run their program into the ground for an extra year. Just to be nice. And don't forget he had a CONTRACT!!!"

"To hell or Michigan with them."

Haha, that's great! So redundant. :)

Nate S-

No problem, man--I was just imagining some people going "man, how did Nate get over to Seattle and back so quickly, and why didn't he tell us?" Lol.

Yeah, he had a contract alright and my understanding is that we honored it to the letter. From what I have heard, it had performance measures and consequences spelled out with some specificity -- both on the upside and downside. When he x'd (lost too many games), we y'd (released him with a predetermined amount of greens fees to pursue other opportunities). Everything was spelled out and agreed to IN ADVANCE and then, ultimately, carried out in accordance with the contract. End of story, Mark May, et al.

Funny thing in the article."Stanford hasnt had a winning season since he left." I wonder why? Could it have been all those great recruiting classes?

Re: Ty's release from UW.

I see that he's also getting $1M next year since he was let go with a year left on his contract. Isn't he still getting $$$ from ND?

Must be nice to pull down that kind of coin by being incompetent.

America... what a country!
