I'm really impressed with the grounds when I visit during football season. ND is putting much more money into the landscape than when I was there.

However,I still remember those damp short winter days when the sun didn't pop out until the end of March. We called it the nation's 'armpit'.

The line I always heard was that a caravan (think Oregon Trail) of Holy Cross priests was planning on establishing a Catholic university in southern California. They got to South Bend in mid-February, and said "we're not going to keep going until the weather gets better." And they never did...
