As long as everyone is dead set against talking football; "perdure" is too close to "Purdue." We are but humble Domers. Pun intended?
On an ND football note, TLB's famously "more accurate that the usual Domer and much moreso than Kool-Aid Domeys" fearless W-L prediction is: (Drum roll) 6-6 give or take 1.
FYI, my 2007 predix was a miserable 4 games off of the pathetic 3-9. Sorry I didn't see the OL / K implosions coming.
ND football? ..... CFB? ..... NFL? .... Bueller?
P.S. Sorry for the non-nostalgia ND football post. (Smack, smack "Bad TLB! Bad!") ThE LoSt BoY | Email | Homepage | 06.17.08 - 12:15 pm | #

i love it.
from a different era, words to live by.
on another note, anyone have a view on SMQ - Sunday Morning Quarterback? just checked it out for the 1st time. had a fairly un-biased preview of Michigan's upcoming season. seems to be a site, at least at a quick first glance, deicated to trying to give objective views on college ball. vs. the sometimes frothy versions seen on one-team blogs. (BGS not included, well, only if we exclude last summer's pre-season poll that predicted 9-3 or something like that. :^)).

Reality is enriched by fantasy, if fantasy is allowed to illuminate reality, but not to engulf it.
Sadly, truly intelligent people like Father Ted are in short supply today. When was the last time you read something written by a public figure that was as deeply thoughtful and cogently written as this? OC Domer | Email | Homepage | 06.17.08 - 4:45 pm | #

Irisheyes is reporting that ND picked up a kicker today: Nicholas Tausch out of Dallas, TX.
One of my concerns about the incoming class this fall was that we didn't have a kicker or a punter. Now we've got one of each. I think its pretty clear that Charlie & Co. made kickers a priority this year, but I'd love to hear something from them on why this year and not last year. DC,
Thanks for the ND football post.
It will be good when we can beat Navy with a REAL kicker. Maybe if we had a REAL special teams coach.

A bit more from the Dallas Morning News:
Jesuit kicker commits to Notre Dame
5:13 PM Tue, Jun 17, 2008
Jesuit senior kicker Nick Tausch (6-1, 175) on Tuesday said he has orally committed to play football for Notre Dame.
Chris Sailer Kicking.com ranked Tausch as the second best high school kicker in the nation. Tausch hit a kickoff with a 4.61 hang time last April during a kicking camp.
Tausch said Notre Dame was his top choice all along. It only took him an hour to make his decision after he got the offer on Tuesday.
"It's just a great honor to become part of the Irish," he said.
Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a Class of 2009 recruit can sign a national letter of intent is Feb. 4. Jim '72 | Email | Homepage | 06.17.08 - 10:26 pm | #

OCDomer, I was going to reference the same line. That sentence is extremely powerful. Rare to see or hear insights into why sports are important to us the common man or even blog writer.

Fr. Hesburgh's poetry in motion is striking on several levels. First, is his 1966 word choice of "psychedelic" when mentioning the bowl games. 1966 seemed a year too soon for common use of the word, but quickly looking on the interweb, I noticed psychedelic art was the cover story of the Sept. 9, 1966 issue of Life Magazine. Second, I was wondering if other (Northern?) programs used ND's policy of no bowl games (until the 1970 Cotton Bowl) as fuel for negative recruiting? (I started to follow ND football in 1980.) Lastly, it seems unusual that SI would publish a thoughtful piece from a college president, but then again Rev. Hesburgh was not the usual university president--whether the position be at ND or anywhere else!
An outstanding out-of-print book to read on Hesburgh and ND in the 50's and 60's is "Hesburgh's Notre Dame: Triumph in Transition." I was able to track down the 1972 book by Joel Connelly through inter-library loan.

William Faulkner (yes, the William Faulkner) was a frequent contributor to SI back in its early years. Hemmingway also wrote a couple of pieces, IIRC. DJ | Email | Homepage | 06.18.08 - 8:08 am | #
