I actually prefer this format. I think it'll give us a better idea of "is the DL that good/bad" vs "is the OL that good/bad?"

Plus, I've heard great things about that Potter kid.

making first trip to SB for a game in years. driving in from PA. is there any chance this will be sold out? do i need to get tickets in advance?

I was a student at that Davie game, it was madness. If nothing else at least it proved how inept the team's offense was that year.

Never thought I would see "TE" listed as being thin on depth during the Charlie Weis era. What happened?!?

So if a 3-and-out is considered a "defensive stop" does the defense get 5 points?

Wouldn't the Defense be the ones blocking the punt after they hold the offense, so shouldn't they get the 3 points? Or is it considered offense because we are about to receive the ball when the other team punts to us in a real game?

If my wife wasn't taking a test that will determine her future in grad school on Saturday, we would definitely be at the game. Ah well, priorities I suppose.

Calvinball and jigglyball? sounds like fun.

In these scoring systems the defense definitely has the advantage. Especially in the spring, because the offense has a lot to learn and refine where as the defense can just "react." I expect the defense to dominate, especially if TAH-NOO-TAH is threating lives on one sideline.

This game will reveal nothing. A lousy defense will make the offense look good. Another lousy offense will make the defense look good.

It's like watching a bloke arm wrestle with himself. Is he strong or is he weak? Won't know until September.

Let's hope the game doesn't end in a double-fault final-play elimination like the Helsinki episode of 1919, and I think we all remember how THAT turned out!

Nice addition of the extra scoring rules. Usually, you pay double for that.

A game of Fizzbin, anyone?

Never seen the Blue Gold game sold out. It's SNOWED quiet a few times recently though. Thankfully I was in the pressbox

With all the news lately about how weight loss plans involving ponying up to a fitness club, etc., if you don't lose weight, how about a system where you earn negative points for your side of the ball if you blow a block or get pancaked? That oughta whip the lines into shape.

IRISH HOCKEY IN THE FROZEN FOUR VS. MICHIGAN TONIGHT! ESPN 2 @ 9:30. ONE OF THE TEAM'S STARS IS CHRIS HANSON . . . SON OF DAVE HANSON . . . YES, OF THE HANSON BROTHERS FROM "SLAPSHOT"!!!!

Can we get a full key for the bottom 6 bullets?

I can only recognize about half cricket(?), quiddich, calvinball, dodgeball..

I like the tennis ball game the best...

How many points for throwing the calf carcass into the circle of justice?

That made me chuckle.

What? No BASEketball references?

Dodge, dip, duck, dive, and dodge.

I say, old fellows, due to the influence of the first extra rule, it would seem that the match has been judiciously scheduled to finish just in time for tea!

i recognize judo scoring.

Well, if they are not going to include at least one quarter of riders on horseback fighting over a goat carcass, I may not go this year.

It's Christian Hanson - he goes by Christian.

Is that Jigglyball from Scrubs? What a great show!

You catch a ball, one of their players goes out. One of yours comes back in. That's the way you hurt 'em. That's the way you win.

Charlie's got 15 practices to whip those suck-ass Vader junkies into shape . . .

Ah, the waza-ari. It's amazing how much you can learn about Judo when you live in Japan and are limited to their Olympic coverage on TV....(Athens 2004...soon to be Beijing 2008...)

Harry Potter. Hilarious

We better not lose 38-0 to Michigan in hockey.

GOAL!

AND AGAIN!

2-0 Irish

3-0!

pretty crazy game...who would have thought? On mgoblog, someone tried to suggest that Michigan had the better opportunities and dominated the period. Maybe I don't watch much hockey, but after the first five minutes, I didn't see any domination. And ND missed plenty of their own opportunities on power plays. And its 3-0. Might need to emphasize the 3-0 part. Pretty important.

Our guy could not have been more offsides on the third goal. I have it freeze framed on my Tivo - both his skates are over the blue line and his stick and the puck are clearly on the OTHER side of the blue line. I'm not complaining...GO IRISH!!!!!!

I'm checking the score on college hockey online, but it seems to be 30 minutes behind. Is it still 3-2?

4-4 and into OT.

5-4 IRISH win in OT!

Onto the title game against BC

GOAAAAAAl

There would be nothing sweeter after the recent sour losses than a win over BC.

Go Irish.

Go ND for the NCAA Hockey Campionship Saturday night.

Awesome! 7pm ET Saturday. Let's go Irish!

Erik '04 - if the punt was done by the offensive team, they would be wise to kick it backwards. Punting is essentially a defensive kick in contrast to a field goal which is offensive.

Although the scoring is confusing, this format is really more useful for the coaches. You can't try a Hughes/Allen backfield if they are on opposite teams, and thats just one example.

Notre Dame hockey team just beat the "best" team right now.

After my post encouraging ND fans to watch the ND hoops team against WSU jinxed the Irish, I'm a bit hesitant to do the same for the hockey team.

I think we'll just leave this post up through the weekend...you know, sort of like not washing your lucky shirt during a winning streak.

Ahh Michigan, the only thing better than beating your #1 ranked, highly favored, Hobey Baker winning hockey team and puncturing yet again your overinflated sense of self-worth, is doing it and winning the National Championship.

Go Irish! Beat BC!

you don't want the 2nd team beating the first team at a time like this.

Hockey last night was awesome! Team showed a lot of grit and determination and they didn't get flustered when Michigan came storming back. Can't wait for the BC game tomorrow.

OCmj - are you going to the game watch party tomorrow in Fountain Valley? Should be a blast!!!

You know, GO IRISH, I think maybe it's time to reunite with some of my fellow game watchers. After our continuous downward slide last year, I stayed home and suffered alone.

You goin?

Replay in hockey? Who knew?

I hate it when a replay official takes all the life out of a game. What a joke.

Replay in hockey? Who knew?

There's replay in the CCHA (and, I would assume, most if not all of Division I college hockey). There is definitely replay in the NCAA tournament, as we all are now familiar.

Usually, they get it right. Not tonight, as the general consensus of neutral NHL observers in attendence attested.

I don't think we would have won even if the goal stood. But I sure would have liked to see us in a 3-2 game with 16:00 to play.

Top view looked like he could have kicked it in but side view clearly showed the puck bounced off the skate before he started moving it toward the net. That, coupled with the unlucky bounce at the other end of the ice 35 secconds later really took it out of the team, as it would any team.

I'm really proud of the ND hockey team this year, though. They're the 2nd best team in the country, made it to the first frozen four and title game in school history, and gave us all something to cheer for in a time when spring football optimism is the only thing we've got going for us. My hat is off to them. Go Irish!

Now back to our regularly scheduled spring football updates...

Did anyone else see that the GAMEDAY CREW was broadcasting the nationally televised Florida spring football game on ESPN today? Too bad our game won't be broadcast, but some years I think that'd be a good thing.

When they were describing the rules at one point the announcer said "There will be normal scoring, not one of those crazy scoring systems thank goodness." Haha.

Football news, anyone?

I mean, ND football news.

Top view doesn't really show you anything. The first ESPN replay pretty much has everything you need to see. In my mind, the key is the left skate contact. Lawson missed when he kicked with the right skate, and I think that's obvious.

I heard Tanuta told a player he's playing like a bag of sh**, and if the bag was on fire pissing on it wouldn't even put the fire out.

I'm kinda liking this guy.

Btw, that was a goal.

In my mind, the key is the left skate contact. Lawson missed when he kicked with the right skate, and I think that's obvious.

Except the replay official stated that the illegal contact was with the right skate.

Yep. I take back anything nice I said about Shepherd. The guy's incompetent and should be sacked, and they better not let him anywhere near the replay booth for another of our games.

I guess now we know how the WCHA feels on a regular basis.

Football?

Bueller?

Echo . . . .
