Sounds like a great hire. It does seem like CW like also be the OC. If he does that, I hope he will stay in the press box. Knowing him, he probably will not.

Now if he can just fill up the empty spots with quality recruits in the next 2 weeks. The clock is ticking.

Save 'em up for 2010. We should have a monster recruiting staff.

Alford sounds like a truly great hire.

Love this hire and Alford's tendency to game related drills. Go Irish and go Rams!

I'm sold. Sounds great

"ISU running backs lost a total of 13 fumbles in the 8 years Alford coached there. As a point of comparison, ND backs lost 12 fumbles the past two seasons"

now THAT is impressive.

Wow, ....again wow, zero turn overs rushing. Great hire, charlie!

I dont know about you guys, but the more i think about these hires and the more i read up on them, the more excited i get. Im looking forward to seeing who the DL coach will be, hopefully one of the rumors that are floating out there will deem to be true. Charlie seems to be getting his act together. With these guys that all seem to be "in your face" guys, I see no problem with charlie now being able to go up to the box to call the plays. If he's smart, he would do it for the benefit of the program, because now on the field he's got the motivators he needs. Bryant young, corwin brown, tenuta, alford, verducci.........

as for the rumors about a head coaching change after this recruiting class signs:

"“It’s ridiculous that this rumor has even gained the traction it has over the past few days. I hesitate to respond to it at all because by dignifying this ‘report,’ I set myself up to be forced to set the record straight on future rumors. But it’s obvious that some people out there are trying to sabotage our recruiting efforts and it’s unfortunate that their agenda has been published and reproduced in recent days,” Brian Hardin, Notre Dame’s Director of Football Media Relations, told BGI (blueandgold.com).

Does anyone know what style of running backs and running game he has worked with? Is he familiar with developing the backs into a one-cut zone blocking scheme, or have they been straight ahead or bounce it to the outside type runners?

Erik, that is something I have been trying to research.

No luck yet.

As unexcited about Verducci as I was, this hire seems to have me feeling the exact opposite. Welcome aboard, Coach Alford. Looking forward to seeing your impact on our game!

Regarding the zone blocking question, Barney Cotton was the OC at ISU from 2004-2006, and he was a zone blocking guy.

"People say zone blocking isn't physical, but look at this — that's bleeping physical!"

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u...& u_sid=10391390

As far as the last two years at Louisville, HC Steve Kragthorpe hired Brent Myers to be his OL coach. From what I can tell, Myers is a zone blocking guy. Therefore, I'll make the educated guess that Kragthorpe's offense is based on zone blocking, too.

It would seem like Alford is well-schooled in coaching backs for a zone blocking scheme. I recall that CoachD on IrishEyes has posted that most of Haywood's experience was actually not in zone blocking schemes, but I'm not sure of the specifics.

Typo: "corp" vs. "corps." Back to Core for you.

To anyone that knows Kehres they know he doesn't just fork over compliments. The man has been an absolute force in Division III football. He is currently leading the longest dynasty in football at any level, no one in division I is even in the same universe of winning as Kehres is with the purple raiders. The fact that he moved so quickly from a division III running backs coach to d-1 is also a testament to his abilities. If it's possible to make less than a graduate assistant, d-III rb coach does. Obviously he has impressed all of his employers and I'll be interested to see how long he lasts as strickly a rb coach at ND.

I'm going to withhold judgment until Mike Coffey weighs in on the cultural implications of this hire.

I like what I've read thus far, however.

Just watching that short sample video was rather impressive. The guy definitely seems to have a lot more energy than Haywood did.

maybe washington utilized "rushing by committee", in that case corp might be ok.

Eddie, I'll wait for Jason Whitlock to weigh in on the same. I have a feeling I'll be waiting a lot longer than you.

What a freakin great hire. Seriously, 13 fumbles in 8 years? That is unreal. Just thinking about how Gray fumbled at the 1 against Navy to set up that near collapse still pisses me off, but I think those days are over. Hard, physical running is definitely what we lacked last year out of the RB's. If Alford can get those guys, espcially Hughes, to run with the same intensity as the backs at ISU did, we are in for some great days. Outstanding pick-up for the Irish.

Thanks for the info on his zone blocking connection, Michael.

If our O-line isn't going to be nasty, maybe we'll have some backs who bring that attitude to the game.

And regarding the rumors that ND is sitting on Weis until signing day, then going to hire Gruden: what a bunch of bullcrap. I can think of one person down in Florida that has repeatedly tried to torpedo our program through rumors and innuendo. I wouldn't put it past Urban Liar to be the one behind all of this nonsense.

"I wouldn't put it past Urban Liar to be the one behind all of this nonsense."

That was the very first thing that went through my mind when I heard the ridiculous Gruden-to-ND rumor.

Great hire! Weis knows how to hire good people when he gets the ones he wants, i.e., Corwin Brown, Tenuta, Cutcliffe -- who know how different our development offense would have been if he had stayed. I am not conviced that Verducci was who he really wanted (not that we will ever know or that he can could get a great hire with the current state of the program), but I am optmistic that Alford and Verducci combined can get us enough improvment for short-yardage plays. We don't need a 1,000-yeard rusher; we need a consistent 3-yard back (who doesn't fumble of course).

Let's hope his DL hire has more in common with Alford.

im sure charlie is working his ass off with the DL hire....but at the same time, it sure is taking a while....

I think Verducci and Alford will do just fine. Sometimes it isn't necessarily that the the previous guys weren't good, but just that whatever they were doing wasn't working or that the message got stale. Hopefully, the new guys can light a fire under the collective asses of the offensive line.

"We don't need a 1,000-yeard rusher; we need a consistent 3-yard back."

To be honest, I think we have four of them on the roster currently, but it's hard to get 3-yards consistently when you're met in the backfield every other play.

Per the above Gruden rumor, I'm sure that UF's Head Coach has nothing better to think of than how to sink Notre Dame's program. Like most of us, he probably sees our current head coach already doing a great job of it.

Along that line, rumor has it that Justin Trattou has been suicidal of late, pondering his choice of Florida over Notre Dame.

The above quote by Commonsense ["Charlie finally seems to be getting it right"] says a lot about where we are and what we've become. What is it now, year 5? Could someone make a note to 'revisit' the state of football affairs in another couple or three years?

Out of curiosity, did Coach Willingham make many staff changes prior to year 5?

Besides the talking heads on a slow news day, please tell me that no one is buying the "Gruden conspiracy".

These new hires look great. I can't wait to see how things turn out.

When is NSD?

NDNE:

of course nobody is happy with how things have gone, im the first that has issues and im sure most of us do. But, since the AD has decided to keep charlie and there is nothing we can do about it, it doesnt make sense to bash charlie or try to be head coaches ourselves saying how much better we would do it. hence, when i say FINALLY he's getting it, it's because since we cant do anything and he's staying, at least im happy he appears to be making sensible changes in the staff. nobody is happy nor do i want this to be the standard. if i wanted that, i'd root for one of the yearly top 5 teams.

Interesting article on recruiting
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com...x.html? bcnn=yes

Can someone find John Saunders and ask him if we are still racist?

This is an illustration of why Charlie, despite whatever flaws he or his teams have had, is the right guy to be running the program. He is a natural CEO and excellent at getting talented people around him. Despite the frustrations, this is a recipe for long term success and success at this point is just a matter of time. GO IRISH!

Agreed indy, I would've liked to have seen other people do the job he has done, as crappy as they have played the last few years.....unfortunately, he is learning on the job and while that sucks, it seems he is fixing his mistakes.....now lets see if that translates on the field

1. the gruden rumor is false, but just for giggles, if that guy was hired, he would set ND back 30 yrs, or possibly end the program. an absolute horrible guy to his core

2. urban meyer just won 2 NC in 3 yrs, if you think he actually is spreading rumors about CW, you're nuts. guy could care less. if you do believe he is spreading these rumors, please tell me you are not an ND grad.

Interesting article from the Sports Illustrated site.

BTW, I'm hearing from friends in Maryland, close to Jelani Jenkins high school, that he has eliminated ND from consideration and will be choosing from Penn State, USC, Florida or Stanford.

What....the F***.....is that?

Just spam, Brad. It'll be deleted soon I imagine. I bet it happens more often than we realize and is just deleted before we notice it.

Any news on the recruiting front? Are we making any late pushes for anyone, or are any recruits from other schools wavering now that maybe they have new coaches? Any of ours waivering now that we have new coaches? Anyone besides Teo and Jenkins even a possibility at this point? They're the only names I've heard mentioned at all in the past few months. Are we satisfied with a class of only 17? Should we get some bodies just to get bodies?

You guys don't remember chris? How very sad. ;-)

I'd love to hear some updates on the recruiting front, too.

Belocki, he's done it before. It'snot out of the realm

"I'm sure that UF's Head Coach has nothing better to think of than how to sink Notre Dame's program. Like most of us, he probably sees our current head coach already doing a great job of it."

If he was spreading the rumors (and if you think he's somehow above that, then you're delusional), it wouldn't be because he was trying to sink ND's program. It would be because he was trying to sink ND's recruiting. It's not like he hasn't done it before. I'm not saying he has some grand master plan to destroy Notre Dame; I'm just saying that it's no secret he's a little shady in terms of recruiting and it would not surprise me at all.

First of all, its not like Urban Meyer is out there attempting to destroy ND's recruiting. For one, if there is any coach out there recruiting on a kid that is also being recruited by ND, you gotta pull out all the stops, because ND just has so many natural recruiting advantages (history, campus, education, etc.) that other schools can't match. Its not like Urban is doing anything different than any other sane head coach out there. There job is to get those kids into their school.

Secondly, I sincerely doubt the aim is to "sink ND's recruiting" more so than it is to get ND leaning players to come to coaches respective schools.

'"I'm sure that UF's Head Coach has nothing better to think of than how to sink Notre Dame's program. Like most of us, he probably sees our current head coach already doing a great job of it."'

"If he was spreading the rumors (and if you think he's somehow above that, then you're delusional).."
-- Jade
---------------

Jade .. get a grip. Had he (UM) signed with us rather than UF a few years back, you'd be extolling the guy as the 'Second Coming.'

There's never been a single instance of his doing anything beneath what our current coach has done, or is doing.

The difference between the two? CW's setting loads of ND records, for sure (and for shame) while Urban's amassed a mountain of wins - and jewelry - in the past few dozen months.

NDNE & Brad-

You guys are spot on. The negative perception of Urban is 4+ years worth of sour grapes. The same fans would be singing an entirely different tune if he were at ND right now.

I don't think I'm alone when I say I'd take him at ND in a heartbeat.

I think it is hilarious that people get on this board and act like they now what they are talking about when it comes to our coach doing this and their coach doing that. Nobody knows what happens in the living rooms of 18 year old kids except for that kid and his family.
In regards to Urban Meyer, who cares that he has won two national championships at Florida. Florida was a better choice for him and he took it. Does it mean that ND screwed up. No it means that he thought he could win quicker at UF so he took the job. Everybody that truly follows Notre Dame football knew there was no way ND would compete for a NC anytime soon. Charlie fooled us when he took that 6-6 team of 2004 and made them a 9-3 team and came within an eyelash of beating USC.
He has screwed up. This is his FIRST head coaching job. How many first time head coaches have won a national championship within the first couple of years of coaching??
The one thing that I like about Weis is he is willing to try to fix his mistakes, unlike some of his predecessors.

I'm not saying that Meyer has a vendetta against ND, but I think you're naive if you think he's above using anything he can get against us on the recruiting trail. This is the same guy who tried to tell Trattou he was a 4-3 DE who would get lost in a 3-4 (Trattou is now playing tackle), reportedly told Jevan Snead that he was looking at Tebow to play linebacker, and tried to tell Omar Hunter that Mattison wasn't going anywhere when he had already been hired by Baltimore.

OC mj had the smartest take of all recently when she said that we would know Urban Meyer had designs on the ND job if he suddenly stops poaching Charlie's recruits. Brilliant!

Seems like common sense to me!

So the meeting with Tim Grunhard happened, and he went from "probably not" to this:

ok here's the link to the above entry:

Evidently $$$ talks.

It still starts with the OL
We have talented RB's(Allen, Aldridge, Hughes, Gray)Who moves to FB? If they have the holes or lanes I have no doubt the rushing attack will have success. OL the key. Can they protectJC so he can fire away at the exceptional receiving core that he has? Can JC bring the Irish from behind? All this we await.

I've been accused several times now of "sour grapes" in regard to Urban Meyer, and that if he had chosen ND in '04 I would love him. That is not true, and it's fairly simple to prove: I did not even start watching college football until 2005. I didn't even know that Notre Dame was undergoing a coaching search in 2004, or who the hell Urban Meyer was. Every single part of my dislike for him has to do with things like his players getting arrested for shooting automatic weapons in parking lots or using their dead teammate's credit card, or things like him talking about how senior players have no intrinsic value after last year's bowl game.

Maybe you think it's funny how if he were coaching at Notre Dame I would supposedly think he was the Second Coming. Well, I think it's funny that before the majority of Notre Dame fans started to lose faith in Charlie Weis, criticism of Meyer ran rampant around ND websites. Now that it's perceived that maybe he could help the Irish, those very same ND fans are falling all over themselves talking about what a great man and coach he is. How's that for some hypocrisy?

I'll tell you how wanted Tony Alford is...Urban Meyer wanted him for Florida's running game but he turned them down for Louisville. He is a close friend of the family and I am VERY proud of what he has accomplished and will for ND in the near future. He is very excited about this opportunity and I can't wait to see ND on tv.

That's where the vendetta probably comes from...Tony turned down Florida and now he takes ND...I AM a close friend of his family, so this is all true what I am telling you. His brother, Aaron, is also a good DB coach for Utah. Their father played pro ball for the Steelers in the 60's, so football is in their blood. My old high school in Akron, Ohio(Archbishop Hoban), The Brothers of Holy Cross, teach there and they are from Notre Dame. This makes it very special for my family to see him coach at ND.
