Cant wait to see what guys like Gary Gray and Harrison can do next year. I know theyre still young, but these guys have been touted as difference makers on the defensive side of the ball.

I like to see that Taylor Dever appeared twice - we desparately need more depth on the O-line. That would give Weis and Latina the confidence to run hard practices for the starting OL, worrying less about the potential for injury against the gains in toughness and technique made by the OL.

What worries me is whether the guys on the scout team are given the coaching necessary to train them in the nuances of Weis' offense. I want Tate practicing full speed and integrated into the first team offense enough so that by next year, he's able to run routes and understand his responsibilities enough to start if his talent warrants it. Remember - he was a RB in HS.

I would've had more confidence if we had seen that this year's sophomores were fully involved in the first team offense during their own freshmen years. But now, while I applaud the show team POW for their success, I worry that guys like Tate and Neal were on the show team for the Air Force and UCLA games and not learning the offense/defense.

If anyone has inside knowledge about the scout team actually works, it'd be great to hear.

I noticed that Troy Smith will be starting the final two games for the Baltimore Ravens. How is BQ doing?

BQ is sitting behind a Pro Bowl alternate.

Clearly Smith is starting because the Ravens are lighting the world on fire. Or they are a team who has lost eight (that's 8) games in a row and would start my geriatric grandma at QB if it might spark them to a win. On the otherhand, BQ is a back-up to a pro-bowl alternate on a playoff bound team.

Did I mention Baltimore just lost to Miami?

Thanks for restating the obvious Dan. Troy Smith will always be the guy that starts the final two games in a lost meaningless season. Dan, who's the last sub 6' tall qb to make it in the pros? Now, if the Ravens could play Kent St., Akron, and Bowling Green plus play in a weak Big Ten, Trot Smith might have a season. You hear that train coming Danny? It's the Bayou Bengals and they're loaded for sweater vest. See how you like playin a flat out athletically sick team in its own back yard when they have 5 weeks to prepare.

not having any corners also makes one a lot like a bowl of cheerios, from a certain point of view.

its proboly to late for this

but Yahoo has this thing

were you guess whos gonna win the bowl games

and you get in a group of people
and you guess the games

and by how much they will win

who ever gets the most wins and closest to the points wins pretty much

Austin, that's the best poetry I've read since I misplaced my e.e. cummings book.

ESPN is reporting that Omar Hunter is now seriously considering USC and Florida. Damn...that's one player we really could use.

ya i dont know why i do that
its just a habit

WTF???

why would Omar leave???

we seriously need him
he could posibly replay Laws
where on Espn did you find this?

damnit I read it on ESPN

oh well if he leaves he leaves

but im sure the class will still be a

pretty good one even with out him

"I read it on ESPN"

When will you guys learn...

Rich Rodriguez
fired all of the assnt head coachs at Michigan.

that sucks.

The fact that they got Hunter's HS coach to comment on Florida being a likely alternative leads me to believe this is legit.

Remember Trattou's defection last year?

Indy, ironic you bring up corners on the day it is announced that 2 tOSU corners will miss Title game for a violation of team rules.

Ouch. What happened to that commitment stuff at the end of last year. Guess you can never tell who cheats. It's like, just don't commit if you're gonna look around and play the field.

When was the last time ND fans worried about 5-staar recruits de-committing instead of committing??

To be sung with the tune of "Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town"

You better watch out
You better start to cry
You better not pout
I'm telling you why
The Poacher is coming to town
The Poacher is coming to town
The Poacher is coming to town

He's making a list,
Defensive ends twice;
Gonna find out he's naughty not nice.
The Poacher is coming to town
The Poacher is coming to town
The Poacher is coming to town

He sees you when he's recruiting
He knows when you're a five star
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake

GB,
ha ha ha.
very nice.

Corwin better get on the horn quick and make egg out of that poacher. We need you Omar! With our offense poised to break out (Hosses at RB, depth coming in at OL, hot shot QBs, depth at TE, fast and/or tall WRs) we NEED a solid D to win a championship in '09.

I thought Michigan assistant coaches all had 2 year contracts or something so they couldn't be fired by the new coach? I also thought it was crazy that they did, since a new coach needs to have his own guys on board.

Erik 04, I believe that the way LLLLoyd set it up is that the ass't coaches get paid for two years, whether or not they actually work for the U. of Mich.

So therefore, if they don't find jobs for the 2008 season, they'll have plenty of $$ to buy cheeseburgers while sitting on the couch, waiting for the phone to ring.

A general question on "Commits" versus "non commits".

Is it possible to pull their scholarship, {not their admission, which is privilege enough} before they arrive on campus?

after trattou's defection last year, charlie said they'd have a new policy with recruits. no soft commitments anymore. seems that omar is going (has gone?) soft. so what does charlie and/or corwin do? make an ultimatum to him? and risk losing the stud. or not, and thereby risk other commits exploring options.
tough choice.

What ND is likely doing is recruiting Omar like they would any other uncommitted recruit. He is still committed to ND, but I'm sure ND is working him like they would any uncommitted prospect that they want to convince to come to ND.

I'm sure they are investigating other options as well.

Let's not get in too much of a tizzy about this. Omar's stock has risen a lot since last fall, and while I admit it doesn't look good to have the guy in play again, nobody has yet shown they can boost a defensive player from Corwin Brown.

jdubbs, the reference was definitely intentional. Nice catch. Alternative phrasing: 'how is a Buckeye like a bowl of cheerios?' answer: 'no corners.'

Merry Christmas yo. Go packers! Go Colts!

Speaking of the Colts ,a great Christmas book is "Johnny U" by Tom Callahan.

It is in paperback now. As a kid growing up in the 50s and 60s the Colts were my team.

I was elated when they won Super Bowl V in '71.

When they snuck out of Baltimore in 1984 ,I followed the lead of the old vets and stopped following them.

Having graduated from ND and Grad school at Illinois, I had started following the Bears in the mid to late 70s.

Some could argue that the way the Colts left Baltimore is analogous to the antics of some of the Head Football coaches at schools today.

It's worth a Google.

Go to irishbandofbrothers for an interesting take on omar.

Well, guys, it's December. You know, about the time of year Urban Meyer starts to recruit.

That guy is a joke.

Oh, and Dan, the only reason Troy Smith is starting is because the Ravens have nothing to lose by starting him. They might as well see what they've got with him now. But he would not be starting if the Ravens were any good; it's not like he "earned" the spot.

I can't wait to see Harrison Smith get a bunch of playing time next fall. He is a first class individual, a great student and a heck of a football player.

Perfect ND recruit ...

Don't give Irish Eyes too much credit, the entire list of show team players was printed in the FB banquet program.

jdubbs, I saw the article about tOSU corners yesterday, and thought to myself "No way!? Tressel is suspending a starter for a bowl game? The whole game, rather than '2 series'? Maybe he has learned some class."

But I checked back later, and the story had changed so that only the alternate was suspended. Classic Tressel. I imagine him talking to his starters - "if you're going to break a team rule, make sure you have a non-starter with you to take the fall."

obediah,

It's called the tOSU buddy system. One to party; one to pay.

I'm from PA and St. Joe Paterno is pulling that crap too. This DT Baker got into fight in April. Arrested. DA has postponed the date at least twice. Now it is Feb. That ain't all though!!! Got into another fight in Nov. Arrested again. Charges dropped. Shenanigans declared and charges are resubmitted. Joe still will bring him down to Texas for the bowl game. His TB that fumbled too much and was a SR on the way out he just drops like a hot potato after a rape charge (to be fair, could be he said she said, never got due process yet).
Personally, I group Joe Pa in Dante's level of hell right above Hitler but right below the Bee Gees.

jdubbs:
I am from PA, too, and I absolutely agree with you. JoePa is a darling the media slobbers all over. In reality, his teams have been for the most part mediocre the last ten years and a bunch of his players have been real trouble. The OSU program is first class low life!!

We need to hire the LB coach from Michigan. Szabo...he produces outstanding LBs. Their offensive line coach is available too. I think Charlie needs to look at Michigan for coaching help. Rodriguez did a foolish thing firing all of the assistants. I believe Sam McGuffie may be ripe for a change of heart.

Regarding Omar, I hope that CB and CW can get him to stay. However, if his heart is not with Notre Dame, then we should not be crying about it. Either he wants the Notre Dame education and opportunity to play early, or he isn't worth keeping. We want players who really value the Notre Dame experience. They will not get that at Florida.

What we should really be mad about is that the NCAA hasn't instituted an early signing period like basketball has. They talk about it, but as is the usual case with the NCAA, they do nothing. I wonder if schools like Florida and USC are opposed to an early signing period.

Ted,

I don't know if UF and USC are opposed to an early signing period but I have read that Phil Fulmer at TN is opposed although in fairness to him I'm not sure why. From what I can recall there are a good many college coaches opposed to the early signing period in football.

And of course being from Knoxville I can't wait to see what Harrison Smith can do for the Irish next year.
