Holtz Video...OUTSTANDING. |
God bless Lou and Ara. What great men they are. We are extremely lucky to have them as part of the Notre Dame family. |
Never knew that about the first wireless transmission in America. Add to that the first splitting of the atom by nuclear fission taking place at ND and Father Nieuwland's development of synthetic rubber, and people are going to start thinking we are more than just a football school. |
As the old in-game promos said "When you think Notre Dame, think chemistry"... |
With two quarterbacks throwing interceptions and the third fumbling, it sounds to me like Clausen was the sharpest over the weekend. Am I wrong? |
Hey they only threw 4-5 passes. It's hardly a real test. |
24 hour..its hard to measure who was sharpest over the weekend because each QB was only given a couple times to throw, and the longest of those throws didn't even net 20 yards. Its appropriate to measure who was/will be the sharpest come Sept. against GaTech. By the way, was Demetrius Jones redshirted/does he have 4 total years of eligibility or is his standing that of a true sophomore? |
Jones, Frazer, and Clausen all have four years of eligibility. Sharpley has three. |
If I remember correctly, they don't "red-shirt" at ND, though. They have to apply to ND for a fifth year in order to use the fourth year of football eligibility. |
Domer97 you are absolutely right. But with regard to redshirtting, it's all in the semantics. The NCAA allows each player 5 years to play 4. When a kid does not enter a game during the course of an entire season, whether due to injury, ability, or whatever, he may petition the NCAA through his university so that he might use that fifth season to expend his remaining eligibility. Notre Dame has always insisted that only medical redshirts were allowed. A medical redshirt is when an injury causes a player to miss an entire season. Special circumstances exist whereby a player injured before halftime of the second or third game (sorry but I forget which one it is) is able to claim in his petition that he essentially did in fact miss the entire season. What ND seems to be doing now is simply to not allow freshmen into games if they really won't contribute much. As they mature over the next three seasons the posibility exists for them to be awarded a fifth year, not neccessarily because they missed due to injury, but rather because they simply did not play any as a freshman. That's what everybody else has done for the last sixty years or so, and I am glad that ND is starting to take advantage of the rule "5 to play 4". It does eat a scholarship, and that is why the player in question must be sorely needed to start, provide important depth, or for his leadership qualities. Redshirtting simply entailed designating a kid as a redshirt thus letting the world know that he's not going to play in the games for a year but will be getting his fifth year when it rolls around. ND just doesn't pre-advertise it. Plus CW wants to make sure the kid is needed and will make a valuable contribution to the team. With only 85 guys on scholarship per season, it's extremely important that the right guys are chosen. It also can be a tool to assist with academic performance and graduation rates. |
I hate the term "true" freshman |
I too am not sure whether its the second or third game of the season thats the cut-off for medical redshirts. If anyone remembers, Rhema McKnight was hurt two years ago during the second game of the season against Michigan about halfway through the game. |
its some weird arbitrary number like 23% of the games. Hence in a 12 game football season if you make it into the 3rd game you will not be granted a medical redshirt, and I still believe it is a discretionary decision on the part of the NCAA. I like the way ND does their "red-shirting." b/c the players have to petition for another year after the 4 are up it allows ND to select exactly who they want to return. A perfect example is Marcus Wilson a few years ago, he petitioned for a 5th year but the coaches decided not to award him one b/c he was essentially worthless as far as production goes, therefore they could go somewhere else with the scholarship. im not sure if other schools have the ability to do that, they may be forced to just honor a players scholarship no matter what. And i dont think ND is screwing anyone by this b/c if they offer a player a 5th year that means he will most likely be contributing and if they dont, they have already graduated so they still got a full ride to ND, even if they only saw 3 years on the field. |

Be careful hanging your hat on eligibility years remaining and counting chickens before they are hatched. |
Subway Alumni, |
I think another important aspect of ND's fifth year eligibility petition is that the player must have already graduated with a bachelor's and be taking graduate courses or pursuing another degree or something. Am I wrong on this? |
To Voice, |
ND requires that the 5th year player have his degree before the fifth year. I think some have/will graduate over the summer prior to their fifth year. |
Pat, |
I'd be interested in seeing a poll on the QB race, asking readers who they think the frontrunners are/should be; it seems from here and other sources that everyone has a different take on who "looks best", and who "is in the lead". I've seen comments claiming each of them as the likely starter; the BG game apparently showed us nothing of substance. Taking the pulse of the peanut gallery should make for interesting discussion, in the absence of any substantive information. |
I think we should use a classic five tight end set. |
We could go back to the T formation that Lou used to run on the goal line. |
One last comment on the fifth year / "red-shirting" discussion. When Fasano decided to head to the NFL and not apply for a fifth year, I could not believe how many people said that "He was making a mistake by leaving early." I had to explain to many people that he was not "leaving early", but he had received his degree, and was simply not petitioning for a fifth year. The media was constantly saying this... I guess it is hard for them to imagine a player actually earning a degree WITH football eligibility left! |
Wasn't db Jeff Burris also in that "T" formation? Man, that was awesome! |
A buddy of mine works with a guy that sat with Darrin Walls at the BG breakfast last Saturday. Walls said he would be returning kicks this fall. Nothing new from last year but now we only have to guess who his partner will be. All those in favor of Armando Allen say "I". |
Isn't there some kind of NCAA rule that requires a minimum number of courses to play, even if you only need one course in dancing to graduate? |
Captain Jack - No, case in point, Matt Leinart ballroom dancing. |
