...who'd ever think that basketball would be the noteworthy sport at the university...

Wow, ND shot 100% from the field in that video, with 100% from the line. If they can do that tonight, it will be lights-out.

Whooo hoooo! New post!

The video doesn't show Harangody's 3-pointers vs. Louisville. I thought that was awesome. Go Irish!

So we get blown out by 30 in Milwaukee, and beat them a little closer in South Bend. Should be a good game tonight as the Irish are playing well right now I think.

I think the Irish learned a lot from getting blown out by Georgetown and Marquette that they can't come out slow against good teams. The same happened at Louisville, but what I liked about that loss is that they managed to keep a 25 point game closer than it seemed and eventually got it down to 5 by the end. Expect the Irish to do some damage in the Big East tournament and possibly a sweet 16 elite 8 performance in the big dance.

there's one of gody's three pointers from the ville, near the end of the video. "Harangody says why not...HE GOT IT!" Hoping the boys get another shot at the Cards this weekend.

well that sucked

hopefully we'll do better than last year in the NCAA, but if we turn the ball over like that it will be tough

This team lives and dies by that three. I usually can't STAND the idea of shooting the three first when you're down by a few points. But of course, ND has been good at draining the three.

Hopefully they can take some pointers from this game and learn from it for the NCAA tournament.

Positives? From this game? The only positive you can take is that if a game is a tournament game, this team will positively find a way to lose.

Big East Tourney means nothing except for the teams fighting for their NCAA tourney lives. How many times have we seen a team make a run in their conference tournament and then lay an egg in the big dance (i.e. Gerry McNamara and Syracuse)? I'd rather have the Irish lose early in this and make a run in the real thing. That being said, I hate seeing them lose and lose the way they did - I hope it was a one time thing . . .

It sucks not having a rooting interest for the rest of the Big East tourney, but I keep telling myself that perhaps the extra rest will give the team an advantage going into the real tournament?? Yeah... I would still rather see them play tonight and tomorrow...

I'm a huge fan of Brey, but every year during tourney time (both Big East and NCAA), it's painfully obvious that ND doesn't have an offensive gameplan aside from "Let's hope our guards are on tonight". You can rely on the three-ball when you're at home and the crowd's behind you, but not on the road or a neutral court.

I'm also surprised at the lack of defensive adjustments. Marquette continued to drain threes and ND didn't change anything up.

And it looked like Harangody was playing with the weight of Big East Player of the Year on his shoulders. Hopefully he got it out of his system.

Last night's game is example #35 why BGS should stick to football and leave the hard wood coverage to the fellas at green and black.

A funny comic today; the author happens to reside in Michigan.

This team needs to learn how to play away from home. They lost on a neutral court that was as much a home floor advantage as they can get, given the NY ND subways. They have been great at home, but they need a better gameplan away from Joyce. They looked lost last night.

I was thinking along similar lines Sean.

ND BB = 'one and done'

I, for one, think this is a very good ND team, and I think Brey's doing a great job. They ran into an incredibly hot shooting team last night. In sticking with a zone so long, Brey gambled that a pair of shooters with sub 30% 3-point percentages would revert to form by the end of the game, and they didn't. That's life. He'd probably do the same thing when faced with the same issue again.

One thing I noted is that ND's got a lineup that gives outside shooting teams fits: Hillesland, Ayers, Kurz, Zeller and Jackson/Mac. That's four out of five guys with VERY long arms. It turns the game ugly, but ND came out of the scrum ahead.

I understand, by the way, that you can't sit Harangody just to have a lot of wingspan guys out there. But it was interesting to see the effect that had on Marquette's shooting.

Anybody else read this article on the new Michigan S&C program??

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/co...tory? id=3293269

We got anything like that going on????????

Hal, I must be watching a different ND team than you. I have not seen Notre Dame give any outside shooters fits all season. In fact, it seems like every team's two guard turns into Reggie Miller, regardless of his shooting percentage. Notre Dame has no perimeter defense.

Oh, and Kurz has no business on the floor. None. Hillesland may not be the most talented guy, but he hustles every second he's in the game.

"Bright Lights, Big City"

This isn't a reference to ND grads Umphrey's Magee's song of the same name is it? No? Oh well...

Does anyone know what Notre Dame's overall record is in the Big East tournament? I swear Madison Square Garden is like a black hole that just swallows Irish dreams. Have we ever played well there?

after last night, our all-time big east tourney record stands at a whooping 4-13.

woof.

I hate to be a downer, but I have been saying this all week. ND basketball is like the Atlanta Braves. All we win are regular season games. Win all the games against the teams we should beat, but can't win a game against a top team. I believe last night makes us 2-7 against top 25 teams. Anyone reminded of football season? Not saying we aren't good, but we are a long way from competing with the top teams in the country.

Oh yeah, and for the guy who says the BE tournament doesn't matter, give me an f'ing break. At the end of the day, you are right, a NC matters much more, but for a student body that went through the worst football season in 50 years, a Big East tournament run makes a lot of difference. Losing sucks. Period. Let's just hope this team figures out how to mix up the defense a little and not let the next team use up 30 seconds on each possession only to give them a wide open jumper. (For the entire game)

Any team with a big man down low will beat us.

Michael...you are depressing.

...50 years!?...you're too kind...

BGS Team,

How about a writeup on Lou Holtz for CFB HOF?

Michael,

I stand by my remarks. The Big East Tourney, and all conference tourneys, do NOT matter unless you are fighting for a spot in the dance. They were invented to make more money for the conference. Would I have liked to have won the tourney? Absolutely. Was our performance an indicator of how we will do in the tourney? Not at all.

You make it sound like this Big East tournament was a ray of light in an otherwise depressing existence of a Notre Dame student. I think they will manage knowing that their nationally ranked basketball team will be playing in the NCAA tournament next week and their football team just got another awesome recruiting class. Just remember, they are kids getting a great education, getting great jobs, partying and hooking up every weekend.

I was at ND during the Ron Powlus era, the basketball team's unbelievable Elite 8 NIT run and the fencing national championship and I had a blast . . .

No offense boyz & girls..... but, let's tee it up for SDSU.

Anyone see the ND basketball team? I think they missed the flight to the garden.

Does Spring Football practice begin this week? I think that article posted above said Michigan starts practice this week, I forget when ND does. Looking forward to all the spring ball updates and practice vids if there are any.

Go Irish BBall in the NCAA Tourney!

Lujack - I concur in part, dissent in part. I've always had an affinity for Kurz, but I'm the only person I know who feels that way. I like that he gets in and rebounds, and that he has made strides every season (even though he'll never be confused with an All-American). As for Hillesland, I completely agree with you - he's a great guy to have on the floor, because he does a bit of everything. He's a slasher, though a bit shy on athleticism (not that I'm in any position to judge).

As for Brey, I've never been a fan. It might be partly because he comes from the Krzyzewski coaching tree, butI don't like the "live by the 3, die by the three" philosophy in a typically rough-and-tumble, physical-in-the-paint conference like the Big East. In my estimation, Gody is the only post player to come into ND and actually improve his play dramatically during the Mike Brey era, and we've had some guys with talent come through the program. Most notably Torin Francis looked like an NBA prospect coming into school, and the sixth man on a JUCO team when he graduated. Somehow, I just feel that Harangody is excelling in spite of his coach. I hope I'm wrong, and that this is a sign of success to come.

As for the big dance this year, I'm a bit distraught that we were given the dreaded #5 seed in the East. Famously, there's at least one 12-5 upset every year. Please don't let it be us this season. I'd love to see at least a Sweet 16.

Hopefully George Mason's Andy Warhol Fifteen has expired, and Notre Dame gives them a no-mercy beatdown. But I worry that GM might open a can of whoopass on the Irish, instead. Then legions of Mike Brey Apologists (Notre Dame MBA's) can tell us how much we are improving and how next year everybody better look out.

If we do get past Mason (big if), it could set up a 2nd round match-up against Winthrop, provided they beat Wash St. (which is distinctly possible). Based on what happened last year, I'd much rather play the #4 than the #13 for the honor of getting ripped by UNC in the Sweet 16.

Reno -- Well said, particularly about the non-existent improvement (indeed, regression) of guys under Mike Brey. Torin Francis *and* Chris Thomas both got worse every year. And don't even get me started on how he wasted Harold Swanagan (okay, I'm kidding about Swanagan).

I'm fine with relying on the 3 as long as you play defense and rebound on the other end. But I'd also like to see Notre Dame, when it has a lead, running a half-court offense and working for a high percentage shot. Some actual coaching during the last five minutes of the game would also be a definite plus.

I hate Mike Brey - gets a lead and stalls. He was up by 5 (without his best player) and loses by 10. The Irish were outscored by 15 in the second half.

I do agree that some of the talent is thin, but he does have the BE POY.

I'm not sure how posters upthread came to the conclusion that ND "lives and dies by the three", given that we were very much middle-of-the-pack in three point attempts per game in the Big East -- and I don't think that includes adjustment for the fact that we're one of the highest-paced teams in the conference, either.
