Woo hoo! No more Big 11 officials screwing us in our own stadium.

Just thinking out loud here, but do you think it is three in case there is some fallout with DD and his incident?

thanks Pat...great watching the announcement.

Love the officiating crew change. Hate to hear about Gray. Wishing him a speedy recovery (not for his own sake, but for the team's, because I'm a selfish jerk like that).

All this talk about 2 and he announces 3? Color me disappointed.

Let the ND Renaissance continue!

it's a good sign when ND fans can be disappointed with having three viable options for QB during a rebuilding year. then again, i'll probably never get over the pain of the QB carousel that plagued the last years of the davie era, so i might be biased.

Replacing Big 10 refs with Big East, thank you lord.

i feel pretty bad for Zach. I'm actually really excited about no more Big 10 refs. I hate them so much. DD wasn't at fault in that incident, i don't think that is the reason.

Tim Tebow & Chris Leak, anyone?

Getting off the Tiny 11 refs is a great thing. Unless B-East IQ's drop sharply (Sharpley?).

Much like everyone else sans Kevin White, I've always thought playing Michigan or PSU with their own conf officials at home was nothing short of completely unthinkable. Thank God someone made this change. Hopefully it was handled well so we're not getting even MORE screwed on the road in the Big 11. If White had a hand in it he should get some credit where credit is due.

Crappy day for Frazer, huh? I feel kind of bad for the guy. But hey, if he didn't perform, he didn't perform.

I'm ecstatic to hear about the switch from Big 10 refs to Big East, but a little disappointed that CW only narrowed it down to three. Very few people were talking about Frazer, it's not too much of a revelation.

It's also a big shame about Gray. But with all the surprising depth at corner we've built recently, we should be fine there.

Umm, does anyone else notice the part about Gary Gray possibly missing the entire season? That is a shame to me because I could see him fighting for some play time, much like Walls did last year. Hopefully he's at least able to get some reps in this year with the practice squad so he's at least learning the system. We'll need him after this season for sure.

Whoever's gonna play on Sept.1 is gonna need a lot of reps......There's no experience here.

maybe it's just me, but it makes sense to at least say there are 3 guys in the hunt for QB. that way you don't have the possibility that 2 guys will jump ship, leaving you thin all the sudden.

Hopefully Frazier sticks around to continue to push Clausen, Sharpley, DD, and Crist next year. If he doesn't it gives us another scholarship to offer to Brendan Beal, Michael Floyd, Will Hill, etc.

My only question re: the whole G2 surgery: Why didn't Jim Russ assess this injury while G2 was nursing a broken hand during spring camp and have 7 months to rehab when he arrived on campus? Its kind of like Ryan Harris' surgery right before camp started last year, why not sooner?

Looking forward to the three working hard all summer with West, Grimes, Parris, Jackson, and Karma whenever he arrives.

Here's one for the other side of the referee's argument: I think this is actually going to hurt us more, at least at the beginning, and especially at Big 10 stadiums.

Big East (or Big 10, PAC-10, et al)officials means that particular conference assigns officials to the game. Some officials work more than one conference, but in DI they tend to stay with one assignor.

Why this matters is that the more you see an official, the more familiar both sides become with each other. This tends to cut down on penalities called - each knows what to expect out of the other.

Now, with the switch, we aren't going to see those Big 10 refs as much, which is going to put us at a disadvantage at Big 10 stadiums.

It is also going to take us time to get adjusted to the Big East officials for home games.

I also wonder if Charlie is going to fly in Big East officials for spring and summer ball. This has to be more logistically difficult than bringing in Big 10 officials.

I am not saying this is a huge deal, but it isn't as cut and dried as it might appear.

I am also willing to bet that we switched to keep all of our officials in all sports coming from one league.

PM, doesn't this mean that big 10 offeasles will continue to screw us in our stadium, but not on the road since we will take 'our' crews from big east? Do I have this korrect?

Three QBs, huh? An interesting play by Weis. I agree, feel kinda bad about Frazer. But that's competition my friend...someone always loses. I still think Clausen will start Sept.1st and I do believe Charlie sees great things in DD. Sharpley's decision making frightens me.

Hmmm. Of course the QB situation is most interesting, especially after Frazer announced in the Spring that he was sure he was the leading contender for the job.

Did Weis announce that all three of the remaining quarterbacks will get playing time in the season opener? No, wait, that was Jim Tressel. OSU opens with Youngstown State and Akron, so they have plenty of time to sort all that out. The Irish, by way of contrast, don't have eight Fall scrimmages before playing a meaningful game.

I can see Evan Sharpley starting the opener (most time in the system) as JC gets acclimated to college play and takes over mid-season, while DJ brings the change of pace and spark off the bench as circumstances dictate.

Congrats to the team on their GPA. I graduated with just under a 3.00 for 4 years, and I wasn't playing football. (Engineering major).

Does anyone think that maybe 3 Qb's will get equal reps now, and once he sees more from them Coach Weis will eliminate another Qb? I have a feeling that might happen.

Congrats for maintaining a 3.04 GPA.

Tough news for Gary Gray, I was very excited to see him on the field this year, I thought he could make it into the nickel- or dime- package.

Depth at corner? Is somebody smoking weed?

We have some fast bodies there - depth is TBD.

CB needs to turn these guys into Walton & Duff if we're gonna win more than 8 games.

I would say that Notre Dame has potential at several positions, but depth won't be a luxury this season or next.

Scott, we'll have the Big East officials on the road, and the opponents' officials at home. Perhaps we'll be at more of an officiating disadvantage when we play teams from the Integer at home, perhaps not.

Walton and Duff got smoked by any decent receivers that played against ND.

Jason,

I thought most of our start under the golf champ was bc of Walton, Duff and Watson. Guess we just got lucky until the Green Jersey fumble-fest.

Our corners stuck to Mannignham like glue ... and the U$C WR's ... and the LSU WR's.

DB depth shows v. big boys. We didn't have it and may find that we still don't have it, despite the Corwin acqusition.

Charlie may have a definite two QB's and probably a good idea who starts in September. I wouldn't be surprised if he keeps up a three QB charade late into fall camp just to keep Ga Tech. guessing. Try game planning for ND when you don't know which of three very different players is going to see the field. I error on the side of cynicism but it makes sense to me.

That's my feeling too Don. He is a chess player that way while Corwin really plays chess.

If I had to take my best guess at what's going on with three vs. two, it's that Weis likes the talent level of JC and DD better, but feels that Sharpley is the only one who is ready right now to step in and run the offense.

Yes, I agree with Mr. Wed. I think Claussen and Jones provide more exciting potential, but don't underestimate the advantage of playing in a system for two years. The question for me is how long Sharpley plays before being replaced with an eye on the future. I expect a similar situation as GA had last year with a fifth year senior, a Soph., and a Frosh all getting early playing time. While Tereshinski started early, he was ultimately replaced by Stafford when JT III (a great name by the way) went down with a bogus injury.

If he was leaning towards Claussen and Jones, then leaving Sharpley in makes sense at a few levels. He already knows the system, he's the fall back guy if things go bad, he's going to stay for the other sport anyways, there isn't a huge investment on either side, Weis could tell him all of that too.

Clausen and Jones made the cut. Sharpley's the fall back guy and may be start a few even if the others keep advancing.

On a positive note, here is an example that should give us hope - the 1998 Tennessee team. I have no idea what they brought back (and I'm sure it was better than what ND is bringing back) but their offense actually improved in the year-following the loss of an impressive four-year starter. Indeed, Tennessee averaged 32.9 ppg in Manning's senior year. With Tee Martin leading the way in 1998 (I believe he was a fifth-year senior), Tennessee averaged 33.2 ppg. More importantly, Tennessee went undefeated. In Manning's freshman year, Tennessee averaged 30.3 ppg (I believe he took over in late September/early October).

I certainly don't expect an undefeated season but it is possible that there will not be that much of an offensive drop-off next year regardless of which quartberback wins the job. A substantial defensive improvement, however, could lead to a really good year.

PJC, I think your optimism is impressive, but there is a big difference between turning over the reins to Tee Martin, DJ Shockley, Matt Leinart, etc. (New starters but 3-4 years in the system) and a true freshman or sophomore. And to answer your question, Tennessee was loaded. Some of the more notable names include Jamal Lewis and Peerless Price.

You are certainly correct about Price but Lewis was a sophomore (granted, he was a sophomore who had just won freshman of the year in 1997) in 1998 and missed the season due to a torn something.

You are right regarding your other point about players in the system for a few years. The more relevant year may be 1994. Peyton Manning started after Tennessee lost Heath Shuler, the #3 pick in the draft. The offense declined by about 10 ppg or from 40 ppg to 30 ppg.

pretty sure leinart was a true soph, but red-shirt soph at best. and i still think he should've won the heisman over white that year.

Perhaps I should have said more depth at corner than we have had the past few years. Sorry, sounds like I caused some people to do a double-take.

I think Jamal went down about halfway through the season and I forgot about Leinart's first season. He started as a red-shirt Sophomore. I imagine we can expect similar results from Sharpley.

If we can run it and stop the run - we can win some post-BQ ball games.

I think we will stop it a lot better than we run it. DB's play TBD.

7-5, 8-4.

I am luke warm on the Big East ref change....

A change from the Big Ten refs was necessary, so with respect to that, change is good....

ND has less games vs. Big East teams than Big Ten teams on their schedule for the next few years, so ND will have less situations where they go on the road AND have their opponents refs.... (So that's good)

BUT following the $ trail, it is in any major conferences best interest to have ND not make a BCS bowl IF that conference has a good chance to get an at-large BCS bowl bid, so having any major conferences' refs seems to be a potential conflict of interest.

PLUS, isn't there some tie-in with the Big East's non-BCS bowl bids and ND?? (not sure of all the details, but I don't think its in ND's best interest either)

Sooo, like I said I am lukewarm on this. Really, there should be NCAA refs ONLY (i.e. refs not organized/paid by conferences)..... Although ND has limited power to make this a reality, I think they could have thought 'outside to box' a little more on this one........

In 1998 TN also had a very very good defense returning led by an outstanding linebacker, Al Wilson.

3.04 GPA? Pretty impressive indeed. Except I think that is higher than our yards per carry last year.

I may be wrong, but I think the Big East refs tend to be very good. I think their commissioner or director of ref ops reviews every single play to see if the refs made the right call and has a very hands-on approach to teaching the refs. It may be a different conference, but I thought Big East spent a lot of time making sure their refs do a good job.

3.04 GPA = impressive. Great job, guys!

Would have liked to see GG. Hopefully he makes a full recovery.

The only problem I see with 3 QB contenders is it limits the amount of reps each gets in practice. Whoever starts the first game will need a lot of reps, so I think I would do whatever I could to get that person practice time. I can see the chess analogy and other comments as well, though, too.
