I've been waiting for that parade phone call for 14 years now... of course, it would have helped if I played more than quad football

Laws to the Colts - pretty please.

Manningham had a 6 - but he smoked our DB's. Domers had high scores, but we sucked. Go figure.

Is it Tood McShay or Todd McShay? :)

I've seen some sample Wunderlic questions, they're pretty hard!

Laws to the Colts would be a dream. I so much enjoy watching Laws but I "burned hte 07 tapes" because I wanted to move on. It would be awesome to see his skills on a fun team to watch in the Colts.

Here is one sample Wonderlic test people can take.
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/ close...020228test.html

Wikipedia also has good info on Wonderlic.

Good thing none of these guys got DUI's like the drunkest driver of them all: Will Yeatman

Remember when Mike Hart guaranteed that Chad Henne would get drafted earlier than Brady Quinn did? For that matter, what ever happened to Hart?

In other news, Seattle might be my new second favorite team. Just drafted John Carlson and traded for Julius earlier in the offseason.

Since I'm moving to Seattle, the only news that could have been better would be TLaws to Seattle as well.

Now Carlson just has to beat out my distant cousin (Jeb Putzier) to start. I guess I should become a Seahawks fan.

Laws to Eagles 16th pick of 2nd round. 10 picks ahead of "Appalachian State He He" Henne.

NFC East. Kick some Cowboy rump, Trevor!

I Colts drafted a Center? Wow....what the hell?

Pollak is listed as C/OG and appears to be a versatile lineman. So hopefully, the Colts are thinking of plugging him in at a guard position. I'd hate to think Saturday won't be around.

I kind of puzzled too, but last year they took A.G. the first round and I though they were crazy for not taking a defensive player. But when Harrison went down that pick proved to be a huge help. In my experience the Colts are good drafters so I'm trusting them on this one as well.

Zibby just taken by the Ravens. uggh. I hate the Ravens.

But at least he went a round higher than most were predicting and jumped Arizona's Barrett

You can say what you want about the Ravens, but I think that would be an exciting defense to be a part of.

Aaron,

Did Will Yeatman pour sugar in your gas tank? You've made two posts that were completely off-topic. He got one DUI- he's not an ax murderer.

Sully, Welcome to Minnesota! Bring your winter coat when you visit as we just had snow/high winds yesterday.

Talk about things worse than kissin your sister... Sully could at some point in the future be snapping the ball to John David Booty.

Ugh.

I would have to think Sully would be happy about going to Minn.

In other news, 17 RB's drafted so far and Mike Hart is not one of them.

About Zibby...

Urlacher made the move as a safety out of New Mexico to playing linebacker. I could see the Ravens doin that with him.

T,

Sully will pay him back by blocking like he did last year. No more JDB.

What is everyone's prediction for Zibby in the NFL? I'll admit to being a bit disappointed with his performance in the last two seasons. I understand that he was asked to do an awful lot for us, and I know he felt responsible for helping to stop the run because we've had some small 'backers, but he broke my heart on a number of occasions in pass coverage. Any chance the Ravens will do what we thought Charlie might do with him: add 30 pounds and play linebacker? (a la Bears and Urlacher, I guess, though I'm not really willing to make that comparison just yet.)

As for Laws and Carlson, I'm really happy for both of them. They both went to teams that I don't like, but into situations that will be good for them. Carlson has a shot to be a Week 1 starter.

I agree that Sully had a rough season. I don't know what it was. Many factors. Heck of a physical specimen. Maybe it was a ton of responsibility on his shoulders, helpin the QB with calls, helpin the entire Line with calls. By the time he snapped it, it sure looked like he should have just taken care of himself.

Oh well, I hope that he can create depth on our line, learn from Matt Birk and the coaching staff. Matt Birk is signed through the end of this year and then could get big money that the Vikes might not be willing to shell out. Could be Sully's spot after awhile.

Reno,

Fasano was traded to Miami. He and Carlson should both start next year.

Mike Hart to the Colts. shoot me now.

Anony,

Dumb insurance against the current backup RB - no hands KnucKlehead.

Colts now have depth at the a_ _ hole backup RB position.

Too bad the Colts overloaded at TE and offense. A run-stuffing DT is what they needed. A fool and his draft picks ....

They have one more shot to not blow it. Sigh.

Colts - another effing Center!

No DL - no Super Bowl.

5. A lot has been made about negative recruiting. What was the worst thing one school told you about Notre Dame, in hopes you would change your mind?

Tom Zbikowski: Well, first of all, there aren't many bad things you can say about Notre Dame. It's well respected anywhere. You can't say you have a better stadium or better alumni ties or better coaches or fans. Not many people can say they had a better season than Notre Dame did last year.

Really, the only thing people came up with -- and it wasn't often -- was that Coach Willingham wasn't going to be there for a long time. And I was like, "OK, whatever. Nice try."

hahahaha

I predict great things for Carlson in the NFL. Apparently some of the analysts were knocking him for hands and speed - hm. I'll take a tough TE with brains and a work ethic any day.

Unfortunately, I don't see Zib flourishing in the basket case that is Baltimore. But I'll be rooting for him up close - were moving there in July. Now if I can just find an 'Indianapolis Orioles' cap on e-bay (I heard they were making them in 1984) I'll surely be able to ingratiate myself to my fellow citizens.

Hey indy,

Be prepared for a real football stadium in Balmer, not a barn like you have now! And be prepared for real passionate fans, many of whom still remember the dastardly betrayal. Oh yeah, wear that Indianpolis Orioles cap. That will get you in really well! The fans are loyal, but not as nuts as Philly or Cleveland. And be ready for real seafood, especially Chincoteague Oysters and crabs. Good ND club in MD also.

Not in the area anymore, but still visit as my parents are in retirement home in Catonsville. Will be there next weekend for Mom's 86th.

wow the douche todd mcshay got every single Irish draft pick wrong.

Oh my god, Aquajock, you are right, it does look like a barn. And at the end of the day, I have to agree that it was a dastardly betrayal. At least they got it right in Cleveland (as a direct consequence of the Colts fiasco) and made them leave the colors behind. Purple will take some getting used to though. Maybe instead of transferring my pro allegiances, I'll become a LAX fan. I hear Balmer's got some chops in that area...

The article on Nedu is a must read. Here's the leadout:

"Boy, did we really screw up evaluating him? We never thought we did," Coyle said. "But the way he came in and has played thus far validated our original evaluation of him. Look at his productivity. He had more production than most rookies. Yeah, 252 picks passed over him, but you have to go by fit for you. His game. His character. Ideally, the guys you've got targeted are your type of players and we were fortunate to get two guys that do."

My prediction: Derek Anderson drops the ball this year; BQ starts and leads the Browns to the superbowl

Get off the ledge, (fellow) Colts fans. The d-line was completely decimated by injury last season and the defense still gave up the fewest points in the league. As long as Bob Sanders stays healthy, I think it should be okay.

Oh, and I truly believe that Derek Anderson will be horrible this year. I don't think he can handle the pressure that will be coming his way (he couldn't even beat out Charlie Frye in training camp last season), he'll fold against Pittsburgh, and they'll toss Brady in. I've got it all planned out, you see.

indy,

LAX is a great choice in Balmer. They play it before they walk there.

indy,
Baltimore gets my vote for "Best crab cakes on Earth". Enjoy 'em frequently. Surely domer06inbmore will hook you up. He's also a staunch crab cake man.

Amen to the crab cakes, Voice!

Not a ravens fan but live near bmore and have been to a few games. Ravens home games are nuts and the fans are fanatical to a fault. They are going to LOVE Zibby, and he will fit right in on that defense. Can't wait to watch him play.

By the way, how awesome is it that J.J. Jansen signed a free-agent contract? You used to be a walk-on. Now, you have a shot at making the Packers.

Three ND players signed as free agents. Got this at und.com:

"As of Monday morning, three players that were not drafted quickly signed with NFL teams as free agents following the NFL Draft: linebacker Joe Brockington signed with Buffalo, long snapper J.J. Jansen signed with Green Bay while running back Travis Thomas will join former teammate and co-captain Brady Quinn in Cleveland."

Just read the San Diego State article on the side bar--their first game is against Cal Poly. While that may not be the best tuneup for them, and hopefully we're better talent-wise and should beat them easily, is it TOO hard to ask that we schedule an opponent our first week who DOESN'T have a game to prep for us?

http://sports.dailyorange.com/?p=980

Looks like "Notre Dame as the enemy" has reached new heights.

You should see what the NY Times had to say.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/2...gin& oref=slogin

Can't say I necessarily disagree with some of what they say and I am one who could easily see games at the Medowlands or whatever it will be called as opposed to Rutgers.

Would USC, OSU, Texas, Michigan, Florida or LSU, just to name a few, play a home and home series for several years with Ritgers??

The one thing I agree with in the screed by Araton, is his dubiousness Of ND and the Big East.

Were we as self important as he portrays, we would be trying to schedule the keener competition of the SEC or your 3 main Florida schools, instead.

Hm, this thread is getting my blood up for '08. I'm feelin' it. ND Nation will be on a knife edge going into September, but I hope Jimmy gets a bit of his swagger back and takes the old Bull's advice:

"Naw, let's walk down and f*ck 'em all."

GO IRISH!

thanks for the shout out voice, but unfortunately I'm a few years older than you give me credit for.

I'm glad to see that we'll have someone else who will be able to participate in our crabcake madness.

Anonymous, I don't know how many other teams we could have found that didn't play the week before us. I think that most teams are starting about a week before ND does this season. I could be wrong, but I think that's right.

I really don't understand why such a big deal is being made of this Rutgers thing. ND had their own terms, Rutgers didn't agree, so the two teams just won't play eachother. No harm, no foul as far as I see it. A lot of people make it sound like, in the comparable case of UConn, ND forced UConn to agree to those terms. But UConn could have just said, No thanks, and walked away (and they would have had every right to). However, they agreed to those terms so I guess I just don't see the big deal about it.

Also, they act like Notre Dame has come out and publicly slammed Rutgers for turning down the series when, in fact, ND just said they understood and they'll move on and find someone else.

I can see this situation from both sides. It may, indeed, be just a simple term of a business deal that can easily be turned down, but it might also be seen as ND making unreasonable demands just so other teams can have the "honor" and "privilege" of playing Notre Dame.

Does anyone know if a lot of other teams in the league regularly play neutral site away games? If ND is the only one then perhaps we deserve our prima donna perception, but if it is common practice then people just need to get over it.

Rutgers blows anyway. I'm looking more forward to the USF game and starting something with them.

Hey, I'm all for ND taking its share of money when it can get it -- especially because it plows much of that dough into scholarships. But when the quest for more dough leads to unsportsmanlike behavior, I think it's time for a reality check.

In my opinion, these are all sportsmanship issues: the 7-4-1 format; dictating where opponents play their "home" games; scheduling more games against patsies.

It's a statistical fact that it's easier to win at home. And if a school like ND is trying use its financial strength to create a schedule that's easier to win, that's ugly.

Of course, we'd hardly be alone in flexing our muscle this way. But we've always professed to be different. This is the type of stuff we all condemned when Miami and Nebraska pioneered it 15 years ago.

One other thing: I saw ND play Rut in their stadium in the late 1990s. It was a great site for a game. Not an easy ticket, to be sure. But it was great once you're there. I'd take it over an anonymous game at the Meadowlands any day.

The 7-4-1 format is definitely ridiculous; I will agree on that. And I don't blame any team for not wanting their "home" game to be at a neutral site that will probably feature more ND fans than fans of the "home" team. But I guess I just say, If you don't like it, don't agree to it. ND isn't saying, "You WILL play us, and it WILL be here." They're just saying, "IF you agree to play us, we want it to be here." Once again, if the potential opposing team doesn't like it, then they don't have to agree to it. And if enough teams stand up to ND and say no (which I would have no problem with; they probably should say no) then maybe this policy will be abandoned.

I agree that our recent scheduling attempts and agreements have become questionable (i.e. the 7-4-1 format, UConn series).

What is so wrong with playing an actual away game? It is almost to the point where we will play USC or Michigan on the road, and that is the only true road challenge for the whole season.

I understand that we want to maintain/grow the recruiting pipeline from the east coast, so there is some incentive to play in the same market every year. So, how about some middle ground with schools like Rutgers and UConn? Why not set up 4 year series with these schools. Each has two trips to ND, one game at home and one game at a neutral site (maybe at the Meadowlands).

Basically, we can try to get to the point between Rutgers, UConn, Navy, etc. that we almost have a game at the Meadowlands or comparable east coast venue every season. At the same time, we will travel to one of the Big East schools home fields every other year.

We seem to be asking for too much. I know they don't have to accept, and we can find someone who will - but our schedule is getting so diluted that we are starting to looking like Ohio State's non-conference schedule last season, playing absolutely no one of value (that includes you Washington!)

Demetrius Jones news:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/ne...tory? id=3373901

That dude never met a microphone he didn't like.

domer03inbmore,
I was so thoroughly disappointed in myself for messing up your handle/graduation year that I, in a fit of self loathing, dropped one medium size crabcake in my shorts. FYI.

Unfortunate situation. Too bad DJ didn't have people around him that could explain a coach is going to do what's best for the team and what gives the team the best chance of winning - and not every player a fair chance at a start.

Just read the article on Dementrius Jones. We were all baffled when Weis recruited him because his style was so decidedly non-charlie. Now he's a sour graper who'll be a bust at Cincy too. He's NAIA-bound.

Take a look at how many home games Penn State, Michigan, OSU, and Tennessee, for example, play. It is routinely 8 and often the first three or four are at home. Yes, they have large stadiums but does that in and of itself justify their scheduling formats??

Lush,

For what it's worth last year Tennessee opened up on the road against Cal. This year they open up against UCLA, on the road. Generally speaking their third game of the year, sometimes the second game of the year is against Florida either home or away. Also they usually don't have more than six home games in a season, seven at most.

My neighbors, all Vol fans, would be greatly insulted by your lumping them into the same bag as those teams from the Big 10. To the best of my knowledge TN has never been afraid to open on the road against a good team if the reward$ were there. TN is also one of the few top programs in the country who will visit South Bend in November unlike the beach boys of SC or the scUM up north.

ah voice... how I have missed our crab cake antics.

Hopefully next season's team will give us fewer reasons to drop a crab cake in our pants and more reasons to celebrate... though I must admit that I am still skeptical.

old bay stings.

Seriously though, can't a crabcake to the pants be a form of celebration? I think it should replace the endzone dance.

Who's with me?

Perhaps Reno. And last season I think there were even a few crabcake celebrations. But they were few and far between. and I think the largest cake of all was at the Navy game, when we converted on 4th down. but it was all for naught.

Yes, indy, old bay stings. But in a good way.

I truly do not dislike Demetrius but, in all honesty, he just needs to shut up. He's kind of making himself into a hard guy to root for, and I would like to root for him. But that will be difficult if he doesn't just get over it already.

I guess it's no surprise we'll be stuck with the current BCS system for some time.

Holtz just elected to Hall of Fame!

Pat, Jay & Co:

You guys see this brouhaha with Will Leitch (of Deadspin fame) on Bob Costas' show?

Short version: the author of Friday Night Lights, Buzz Bissinger, went on a rant about the evil that is sports blogging. It was pretty ridiculous stuff, but I was curious how the BGS guys felt about the matter.

It's obvious this blog is a different animal from Deadspin. But it's also obvious that a lot of the mainstream press has a very warped view of blogs in general.

You can see the show here:

http://ryanspoon.com/blog/2008/0...dia-of-content/

Hal--

I saw that Costas Now segment earlier today. I loved how Bissinger railed on about how "profane" blogs were, while the first words out of his mouth were, "I really think you're full of s***." I actually thought some of his comments were valid, but he was being such a pompous, loud-mouthed jerk about it that it really lessened his message.

jade,

It's a very interesting topic -- do blogs abuse their freedoms --but Deadspin is no more a representative of the sports blogosphere than Maxim is of sports magazines.

If they wanted to have a serious discussion about the merits of sports blogging, they should have gotten Pat or Orson from EDSBS or the guy from sundaymorningQB. Not as if the Deadspin guy shouldn't have been there. It's just that he shouldn't be held up as if his blog somehow stands for the whole of the sports blogosphere.

The Friday Night Lights dude is just plain bitter and scared.

Knoxville Irish:
Look at Tennnessee schedules over the last several years. They routinely have played seven home games. In 2008, eight games will be played in the state of Tennessee. In 2002, seven games were at home and two others in Nashville. I agree that sonme of their opening games have been tough and kudos to the Vols for doing this. They also have had their share of "cupcakes".

If the M$M wasn't so hacktacular, then the blogs wouldn't be so threatening to them.

I mean, heavens forbid they should do any *research* before spouting off.

BGS puts ESPN, Sporting News, CBS sportsline, etc. to shame.

I see O$U is playing Navy in a couple years. I would give parts of my anatomy to see the Middies win one of those games.

Angst,
Great posts! I heartily concur with your views. I appreciated and enjoyed that your posts mysteriously duplicated themselves.

Keep up the good work!
Keep up the good work!

Angst,

Agreed. The thing that irks me the most about people who slag sports blogs is that bloggers are about the only people doing genuine beat reporting these days. They're doing all the tough work.

Also, the Friday Night Lights guy takes a lot of this WAAAAY too seriously. Here's I quote Orson from EDSBS:

"How does a person get to do this [sports blogging}? And think this sick, perverted way about sports? Easy. I know sports doesn’t fucking matter. At. All. It’s dada, a delightful distraction, something not to be underestimated in its importance, but in the end the gravitas wasted on the Masters or the World Series or the BCS Championship game is just that: wasted, and deliberately so. If most people were to pay attention to the really, really important things in life, they’d spear their eyeballs out with cocktail forks and go stand over there in the tryout line for Equus."

http://www.everydayshouldbesatur...-are/#more- 4952

I think the main problem I have with all these journalists screaming and yelling about blogs, is that they don't seem to realize that these people are their readers. Whether you write for a blog or read one (or many), you're usually reading the work of these people. And it's a little hard to respect their work when they're basically calling you a profane idiot.

Good point, Jade. But the bloggers are also competition for the straight journos. And that's where it gets hairy, right?

I think bloggers are competition for journalists in a way, but I think "competition" is even overstating it a bit. No matter what I read on a blog, I'll wait for a "real" news site to report it before I'll believe it's true.

Unless it's Chris Mortensen reporting it, because then I'll just laugh and assume the exact opposite is trye.

*true

What's the longest period of time between BGS articles?

I'm not saying anything... I'm just saying...

Congrats to LOU......what a coach and motivator.

Hey, I believe everything I read on BGS.

Domer 97,

A short while ago I counted 7 days between articles. I think Pat is trying to break the record. The wait is always worthwhile though. I have no idea of anything new though unless it is a new recruit. No news is usually better in the offseason than something like having a "Perriloux".

I just read in the paper that Purdue is in peril of losing scholarships because of the graduation rate of their football and basketball teams.

What's the longest period of time between BGS articles?

I'm not saying anything... I'm just saying...

Agreed. Going through serious ND withdrawls. Come on Pat, Jay & crew. We need our fix! =)

I'm not complaining either , but we do need a new article to dissect. I'm afraid that if this bloggers vs. traditional media thing keeps going, somebody's going to bring up Noam Chomsky and...oh no, I've gone and done it.

I mean, it's not like they have day jobs or a life outside of BGS...

I hope Marvin Harrison can beat the rap.

Re Marvin Harrison,
Yeah, what's up with that???

Whoever wrote this needs to know that EL CAZADOR TROFEO DE LOS HOMBRES means: THE HUNTER TROPHY OF MEN. If you want to say what you said it meant, then say "El demonio que hace trofeo de los hombres." That would make sense. and dont give me any bs. Im from Spain and know what the hell I'm talking about. And if your hispanic or mexican or whatever, then learn how to speak spanish, thats why we came and conquered your dumb asses...to teach you some spanish grammar

What the hell does 'rant' mean?

Nd CornDog should be banned from posting here. Those were highly inappropriate comments that do not belong in a ND related website

Wow that was odd and wrong

Out of a hundred people surveyed, the top one answer is on the board. We're looking for BLANK Inquisition. BLANK Inquisition.

ND Cornholio is really Fernando Alonso after his engine failed in the Spanish GP.

Football . . . echo . . . Bueller?

"I hope Marvin Harrison can beat the rap."

Well, first I will hope that Harrison didn't actually shoot anybody. THEN, if it turns out he hasn't, then I will hope that he clears his name. But I must admit that it's not looking good for him. That's really a bizarre story and it seems like every story about it that I read says something different, so I'm not sure what to believe.

i can't make it one more day without a bgs post...

CornDog is the very definition of an Ignoranus - A person who's both stupid and an a**hole.

or is it both stupid y un pendejo?

(And don't try to correct me. . . I grew up in a middle class suburb of Chicago and don't speak a work of Spanish.)

Muy bien, Southside, muy bien.
