I won't lie, bowl season isn't even over yet and I'm already pumped about our next year.

what's up with paddy mullen? 8 minutes of playing time? i know he was just a soph this year but with the season the irish just had, and the opportunities avaialable to anyone showing the faintest glimmers of promise, you would've thought he would have played more than eight measly minutes.

Regarding safety - Harrison Smith is missing from the list.

True, James, but Harrison Smith didn't play last year.

My mistake, I misunderstood the criteria.

Anello should be a captain.

Don't forget Clausen is young experiencewise and eligibilitywise, but is not young based on his age. Not sure how much that matters though.

Also, when do we get to see a chart showing the difference in experience in Charlie Weis era teams, ie a comparison of position experiece showing 2005 vs 2006 vs 2007 vs 2008 etc?

Just based on experience alone, it looks like the O should be better. However, I wonder if we'll see a drop off in the D. . . .

Here's an overview of the data:

Quarterback - 96%
Running Back - 83%
Offensive Line - 80%
Wide Receiver - 99%
Tight End - 28%

Defensive Line - 50%
Linebacker - 72%
Safety - 53%
Cornerback - 77%

Also, how much of a liability will ND's inexperience at TE be?

Hmmmm I wonder if the overview should only be done with just the starters . . . Clausen will be back, but he didn't get 96% of the playing time last season, so the 96% at QB looks misleading . . . .

"The offensive line took a beating from fans this past season, but a fair number of the sacks ND let up were due to mistakes from the running backs."

Hmmm, that had not occurred to us, Dude.

Shadow . . . "Lighten up Francis"

In other news, ND's QBs were also responsible for a lot of the sacks, because they didnt' work through their progressions correctly/quickly and made bad decisions.

Yes, we know. Maybe if we are nice, BGS will break down ND's year of giving up a monster amount of sacks.

Shadow - I hope to quantify that statement sometime in the coming month or so. And I didn't mean to to criticize ND fans as being wrong or imply ignorance. I just wanted to mention that the RBs were to blame for the sacks as well. Perhaps I could have worded it better.

Pat, you worded it just fine. Keep up the hard work. Looking forward to your pass protection breakdown break down.

Atepesm,

I'm not sure Clausen's age will matter that much...although I wish it did because I would be one year better than Peyton Manning. Sorry, couldn't resist.

With all of the minutes Schwap put in, lets hope next year they become much more productive minutes. Maybe they should move Schwap to nose tackle?

Would be interesting to look at all sacks given up this year and keep a cumulative score of who was at fault each time.

Pat,
No no, I just wanted to work in a Big Lebowski reference. Not meant as sarcasm. It actually had not occurred to me.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

According to the Big Lebowski Lexicon,

"That had not occurred to us, Dude = I hadn't thought of that."

http://www.oliverbenjamin.net/ le...skilexicon.html

I got the reference, Shadow, and count me amongst those it honestly hadn't really occured to (the deficiencies of the HBs in pass blocking).

As far as the blocking last season went - The goddamn plane has crashed into the mountain!

I'll be curious to see in the Blue Gold game how much playing time Luke Schmidt gets at FB and how well he performs. I have to believe that he is at least as good if not better than Schwap.

what's the best part of that list?

travis thomas' name crossed out. ah, it felt good to see that.

trevor laws, on the other hand, not so much...

here's to less carries for schwapp next year... how many times does he have to fumble or not get a first down on 4th and 1 for Charlie to give the ball to someone else? And here's to him living up to his blocking potential of two years ago.

Was it my imagination, but didn't we finish in the top-half for pass protection defense?

If so, Lambert and Walls and Bruton are a big part of that. I think if we can generate some pass rush next year (w/o Laws, that's a big if) we might get even better against the pass.

Now if we could stop the run...

Gentlemen, it IS a simple game. Ah, the pontification must cease. As Coach Pagna (as well as the evil empire BC coach)succinctly stated, Notre Dame will always get the players. It IS what you do with them that makes the difference. Coaching Attitude and Coaching UP.

Did anyone watch the legendsofsouthbend video of the Rocket in Sept. interview. He tells how he runs back kicks. I did not pay that close attention to how we run back kicks. Does anyone know if Charlie's teams do it like the Rocket says?

Safeties - Kyle McCarthy, not Danny. Gonna have to wait until next year for the younger brother to earn some minutes.

What about addressing the coaching "positions" and flipping the return % by speculating what the return percentage would need to be in order to maximize the coaching staff's collective capability?

Well, maybe not a practical endeavor until after Feb. 6th.

Thanks Joe. Careless mistake on my part.

Unless I misunderstand the criteria for the calculations. I think quarterback is miscalculated. 316/364 = 87%

Nevermind. 1s with a strike through them look like 4s.

Career experience was more going into 2007? Or did you mean 2006?

hey
is anyone going to the U.S. Army all american bowl.

im glad its in Texas so I dont have to travel far and the Tickets are lil cheaper here.

Pat,

I hate to pick nits but you are showing "special team minutes" where it should reflect "appearances". In previous years, Lou has given 30 seconds of playing time for each appearance.

This may have been mentioned already I think this analysis would be better if it used TOTAL PLAYS versus TOTAL MINUTES. Minutes over-emphasizes being over-values running plays and under-emphasizes passing plays special teams plays.

Consequently, a specialty player (run-stopper entering on third and short) gets more minutes than another specialty player (nickelback entering on 3 and 8), when in actuality both received the same amount playing time.

This is why you guys are the best!

I can't wait till signing day so we can lock in this recruiting class and fire some assistant coaches! (Slash hiring new position coaches).

RC - It was discussed last year. It's a valid point. The problem is calculating the total plays for every player would take me a month or two. Using total minutes takes me a day or so to copy the data into the tables. I was going to mention that in the intro paragraph, but I guess I forgot.

Abe - Nice catch. I re-titled the table to reflect that it is indeed appearances and not minutes.

What about the % for "Coaches"?

our returning coaches should hover around.... 60%?

I've been hearing things that Prince is considering not coming back? This true? If so, that'll be a shame. Wasn't he supposed to have blazing speed? would have been nice to see him on the field once or twice.

Honestly, at this point, to all the kids who are leaving (or considering leaving), my main thought is Thanks for your time and don't let the door hit you on the butt on the way out. I know that sounds harsh and I really do wish all of them nothing but the best, but it's getting a little ridiculous.

Prince is supposed to be very fast and did get a little playing time at CB this year, not to mention some carries at RB last year. So it's not like he hasn't seen the field at all. I hope he comes back too to keep all the depth at corner, but we'll have to see, I guess. Whatever he does, I hope it all works out for him.

I'm hopeful this is the year that all of that potential will be realized. The excuse of inexperience won't be applicable to 2008. It's time for guys to step up and make plays. I think we're all sick and tired of transfers, horrible execution and a general apathy on the field. Who are the leaders going to be on this team? Where's the heart? We have enough former state players of the year and high school All-Americans to fill a gymnasium. Let's play with that still unseen "nasty" attitude we were promised and win some football games, men.

QB Browns had some playing time today and should have had a touchdown, but consecutive drops by Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow didn't make that happen. Im interested to see what the Browns do this offseason.

chinny had a td though!

By the way, congrats to Ryan Grant. I initially didn't even know it was the Ryan Grant who went to Notre Dame. I thought he was out of football completely. Good luck to the Packers in the playoffs!

Any truth to the rumor the Tuna talked to Charlie about the Fins job??? I realize CW has a massive contract, but still it's Bill Parcells, if he wants Charlie....

At this point, Prince has some value for depth in the defensive backfield, but he's facing an uphill battle for playing time. I'd be sorry to see him go, but he's been a casualty of roster shakeout and we could weather the loss fairly easily.

No mark.

How about that Urbie, poaching another ND recruit? What a piece of crap. Wonder what those kids will think when The Liar slinks off to coach in the NFL in a couple years.

(FWIW, I think the apt Lebowski reference is The Dude (UM) walking out of the mansion and telling PS Hoffman "He (CW) said take any rug (recruit) in the house."

On a positive note, I would like to add a hooray for Ryan Grant and Darius Walker. Both are exceeding expectations this year and doing ND proud.

There was a rumor going around that Parcells wanted Crennel for the Dolphins job too. At this point, I think they're all just rumors, and if there's anything I'm fairly certain about, it's that CW isn't lying when he says he's going to be at Notre Dame until Charlie Jr. graduates.

I have not seen anywhere where we have had any de-commits. Where are you all getting your information?

I don't think there are any de-commits. He was probably just referring to Omar Hunter, which is still a "maybe" as far as I know.

Anyone care to comment why TW and the University of Washington are being given a free pass by the media. The Husky Nation wanted TW fired after just THREE years and TW inherited a far worse program at UW than he did at ND. UW had the worst defense in school history in 2007. TW was forced to fire assistants in order to stay, including long-time assistant Kent Baer, something he refused to do at ND. If TW does not win 8 next year, he most likely is gone via another contract buyout. Where's Mike Wilbon??

RC - It was discussed last year. It's a valid point. The problem is calculating the total plays for every player would take me a month or two. Using total minutes takes me a day or so to copy the data into the tables. I was going to mention that in the intro paragraph, but I guess I forgot.

Perhaps, you could assign out each of the 12 games. I'd be happy to assist with the project, though I no longer have any of the games on my TiVo. I'll make a mental note to chart this stuff for the 2008 season.

Just some updates that I've read about ND commits at the Army AA practices...

T. Robinson: looks very good

Goodman: excellent skills, not there
physically yet

Crist: hasn't really been tested but looks solid

J. Gray: impressive physically, tweaked his ankle

Fleming: very smooth, seems to be impressing people

Filer: reportedly slow according to Farrell from Rivals

Blanton: after losing a fourth star, Rivals seemed surprised that he had two impressive pass break-ups

Clelland, Cwynar: not impressive so far

Newmann: said to be very impressive in the trenches so far

Floyd: looks to be one of the top outside WR

Golic: holding his own with the lineman

Not much news: Rudolph, McDonald

Of note: Gerell Robinson reportedly among the hardest workers at practice, appears smooth and fast

Doug - as far as I know, it looks extremely likely that Omar is gone. Don't know if Urbie's loss today will help our cause or not, but as of a couple days ago it seemed a done deal per some usually reliable sources.
