Who thinks that the microscopic font on the shirt front is cool? If it is worn by a woman wih big tits, it gives men an excuse to stare while pretending they are trying to read the script. Other than that, it is assinine. Ablue T-shirt? Exciting!!! Put some exciting, different, wild logo on the front! Have some fun! SELL some shirts. This is garbage. I dunno how I feel about it. The overlapping type on the front, the type face on the back with a dark, grainy picture remind me a zombie movie I saw at some point. It creeps me out.

I agree with DuffMan. Also, choosing Times Roman font size 2 might have been Freudian slippage since '08 may not be the best year to designate as our big comeback. With the way our guys meekly got their hineys kicked last year, and staying with my Freud theme, the slogan "wake up the egos" would be more appropriate for the new shirt. The way I see it there are two ways to grade the shirt.
1. Grade it independently. How the f does it look?
2. Grade it with respect to past "The Shirts".
In my book, "The Shirt 2008" looks good, but that's because I'm grading it taking in to consideration all the atrocious designs they've used in the past.
If I graded it on its own merits, I might have to admit some of the things mentioned above. atepesm | Email | Homepage | 04.18.08 - 10:16 pm | #

I like the visual design, but I'm getting really tired of "rising again" and "waking up echoes". These would be cool if we actually DID it on the field, but it's so frustrating to wear the physical embodiment of he "hey, um, yeah, THIS year, we're waking up the echoes, you'll see!!!!11!!!2!!!" attitude that other schools accuse us of. We've been trying to "wake up the echoes" since Lou left--can we leave the slogan alone until we actuall have something to show for it? (/rant--yes, I know, we had two good seasons just 2 and 3 years ago...but until we're consistent, let's just leave well enough alone). Nate | Email | Homepage | 04.18.08 - 10:37 pm | #

I'm a fan, especially compared to all of the shirts I own (dating back to 2002).
The small font on the front doesn't really bug me, especially since is ABOVE the tits, not between them (nice try, duff). And its simple and fairly understated.
Its not as if they can put: "we're trying for mediocre", or "meet expectations would be nice".
And it clearly beats that crap about "bottling the notre dame spirit". I like the return to blue, and ACTUAL ND color. yak | Email | Homepage | 04.19.08 - 12:50 am | #

I'm a designer so I'll admit to hating most shirts related to sports by default, and I have nothing against sports per se, I'm just not into the gear. That said, the front of this one is decent, I'd consider wearing that.
The back however, ugh. #12 needs to go on a diet, who the hell chose that guy? It's awful.
It never ceases to amaze me how poorly these shirts are designed. Which is to say I couldn't disagree with Duff any more than I already do. What's wrong with understated and sophisticated as an approach to t-shirt design? jaisn | Email | Homepage | 04.19.08 - 5:08 am | #

Agree with all those that are tired of waking up the echoes. I would rather just see 'Ru-dy, ru-dy, rudy' on the back of the shirt. Then people would at least know that we're mocking ourselves.
As for design... I'm just glad it's not the color of puke as it has been in years past. Nothing worse than 2000 students forming a yellow-brownish sea.
I think we should stick with the same color, different design every year. Commit to green, blue or gold and build a 'known color' for the crowd. domercmh | Email | Homepage | 04.19.08 - 10:49 am | #

agreed domercmh... pick a color. and if it was up to me I woudl choose green...and now last year's green...but bright green. I actually love last year's color. I also have plenty of navy shirts so nothing against this color.
Pick green so it stands out, and so when our fans travel to other campuses we are recognizable for more than our good behavior. Make it bright green so when the team looks into the stands as it runs onto the opponents field they instantly recognize our presence supporting them. Dark green looks like too many other schools - especially annual opponent MSU. Navy just blends in...it makes very classy shirts, but it's not good otherwise. Yellow is horrid. (also michigan and USC both do yellow shirts, and the Michigan/USC wannabe Boston College).
Go with bright green, and stick to it for 5 years until we get all those old fogeys that yell at us to sit down get into it...and maybe they'll actually get some spirit because they simply can't help but be caught up in the excitement when they blend in with the rest of the student body. The fact that the shirt changes color every year is purely a business decision. If it's always the same color, then there is no real incentive to have to buy a different shirt every year. You can just wear last year's shirt and blend in for the most part. However, if this year's The Shirt is blue and you wear a green shirt from 2004, you stick out like the cheapskate that you are. Hence, you need to buy the new shirt to look like you support the team and thus they sell more shirts. Erik '04 | Email | Homepage | 04.19.08 - 12:00 pm | #

Who's the flabby, slow-looking white guy? Is he supposed to be a kicker? A symbol, perhaps, that our kicking game will improve to just mediocre this year?
ND will rise again? Sounds like "the South will rise again", which is a sad joke because folks in the South have been vowing to "rise again" for 150 years, without success. (There's a great on-going "South will rise again" parody at TheOnion.com).
"The Shirts" were better when they were done by the students, spontaneously, and when they were for specific big games and had a real edge to them (usually involving a nasty insult to the opposing team). It meant something to have "the shirt" that was made for a big USC game, or a Miami game, or an important Michigan contest. The Shirt today is so darn corporate vanilla that I just can't get into it.

Thought it was supposed to be raining/thunderstorms...Goin back to 'Sota with a sunburnt forehead. Absolutely a beautiful day for football.
Second year in a row that a couple of friends and I went.
If you have any questions about how things went I'll give you my opinion.
#1 offensive line
IMO, we don't block through the whistle. This is something that you don't have to judge "we're playing against our own guys, so it's tough to judge." You either block through the whistle or you don't. And we don't. IE watchin Olson he turned his guy on zone run to the left. Then he's joggin around the pile. Bad habits. Block through the whistle. Work through the whistle.
The last series was #1's vs #2's IMO except for the linebacking corps. Good stand for those guys. #98 Sean Cwynar, early on campus freshman and #78 Trevor Robinson. The corner on Kumara for the first two red zone incompletions #4 Gary Gray.
First play was an incomplete jump fade to Kumara; second was man coverage, Kumara got jammed by Gray - on a slant incomplete. The touchdown was on #24 Leonard Gordeon as Gray went to cover Golden Tate.
Another opinion that I wish that the defense could receive points for any tackle for loss.
Defense won this IMO, Jimmy less than 50%, not his fault. Even if it's two hand touch, BLOCK! Also, if the sack happened, I'd have a second whistle, b/c then you can still have the route and coverage. Tate broke free after an apparent "sack". The corner quit, Tate gets a free TD, but not b/c of holding.

How about everyone's favorite shirt? I loved my old school Irish '91 blue shirt. I liked last years color, but we need to stop with the design on the back. They're turning into those NASCAR shirts you see at the Elkhart County fair.
And since it was brought up, how 'bout giving us a shirt that on the back states "Stand up or watch from home." We're fans! If you can't physically support your team you're taking up a seat that could be better served. mark | Email | Homepage | 04.19.08 - 9:31 pm | #

As a previous shirt designer, I have a couple things to say that may clarify the process, business decisions, direction, and love put into each design.
Like someone else said, the color changes every year because it sells more shirts. As a committee (of students) we looked at statistics of total shirts sold, and it drops drastically after consecutive years of the same color. I would LOVE to have consistency, but when the project is viewed as a fundraiser for students in need, smarter heads prevail.
The design itself is very tricky, as it needs to be edgy enough for students, classic enough for alumni, gender-neutral, and non-offensive. It should show tradition, excellence, and class, and should represent our school well. As a student committee, The Shirt Project has to pitch the design to countless adults and advisory boards (including the Bookstore, yikes). We have to obtain copyright information and permission from every person involved in any capacity. Honestly, it gets a little hectic, and sadly, it gets a little corporate. I think The Shirt Project is necessary and amazing for our school, but I applaud student "bootleg" shirts as well. It's always nice to stick it to the man.
As for this year, I wish the front were a little more hard-hitting and in your face. There was a sweet unchosen design one year of Rhema McKnight running full speed across the letters with a little smoke and distortion, and it gave The Shirt some energy. I agree with a previous comment about it looking a little "Nascar" with a complex photograph print on the back, but I guess it doesn't bother me a ton.
Honestly, this year's font kinda drives me nuts. I'm not a fan of typewriter serif fonts (a la Courier) because it looks cheap. Big, bold -- these should be a priority for The Shirt.
Hopefully this clarifies a bit. Regardless, go buy The Shirt and scream for our team through bad games and good. Support our students. Praise our Lord -- we have a school we can be proud of! Ryan Ricketts | Email | Homepage | 04.19.08 - 10:35 pm | #

My friend Ryan designed the "Tradition" shirt, and he says the designers are really hamstrung in what they can and cannot design. No edgy designs are allowed, because the need to please elderly alumni is deemed paramount. I don't think with the way things are run that we are going to see any really awesome shirts anytime soon. The best we can really hope for is not sucking, and this shirt at least passes that test for the most part. Kyle | Email | Homepage | 04.20.08 - 1:24 am | #

My two favorite shirts (even though they weren't "The Shirts") #2 was the one with Todd Marinovich being carried off on a stretcher - "I've fallen and I can't get up". Yes it was a hackneyed, over used slogan of the time, but it was funny because I played hoops against Marinovich in high school and he was a wuss. #1 had to be the "Decade of Dominance" shirt about the 10+ years of beat downs ND put on USC over that same period of time. Oh the days of yore!
I lift my Guinness to you all here and offer my hope that we will soon return to the days of dominance over all those teams we face.

Ricketts, thanks for the input. It is almost impossible to have anything new, exciting or successful come out of a committee. I appreciate the effort and the goal though. Personaly, I think anything on the back of a T-shirt is merely added expense. Most people (of both sexes) are viewed face forward. Whatever the message on a T-shirt, it is the main attracion for buying it (loyalty being second) and as such should be easily read and understood. Colors could be rotated each year using Blue, Gold, Green or any combination and still be 'new'. I like T-shirts that can be worn anywhere and are comfortable. Simple designs ala silhouettes, are line drawings are good. Most importantly, T-shirts should be cool. Deep color. Bold fonts. Simple message.

I work in the ad biz, so design and type aesthetics are especially critical to my judgement of a piece.........the font is weak and doesn't need to overlap. Also, photos never do well on t-shirts, and the graphic on the back (why so large?) is a bit too much. I don't see the point of putting '77 and '88 - we are all very cognizant of our last National Championships - it seems bad voodoo to put those years up.
My favorite shirt is the '02 Return To Glory. Where I sit, we should always have a green "The Shirt", but that's just me..... mikes1160 | Email | Homepage | 04.20.08 - 6:33 pm | #

As a recent graphic design alum from ND, I'd like to say the creative process can be stunted when there are too many cooks in the kitchen. Design in a smaller group and present to a committee. Designers should design, not Bill from the Class of 19xx who loves the Irish and loves t-shirts.
That being said, I sincerely believe a quality shirt with strong typeface usage and even an illustration (I'm personally against photography on t-shirts) that satisfies the masses could be produced.
I personally would like to see more bright green shirts. I know you can say it's a fundraiser and sales drop if colors are repeated-- but I contend that if the shirt is consistently a beautiful product, you won't have to worry about declining sales. A good shirt is a good shirt.
Until then, I'll just expect the NEXT The Shirt to feature Comic Sans, a gold helmet, and another photo-montage on the back. NDDallas | Email | Homepage | 04.20.08 - 7:39 pm | #

RE: The Shirt
The photo on the back is terrible mostly because it is unrealistic - when is the last time you saw a player with #12 (typically a QB number) being such a fat ass? Looks more like they took a thirtysomething guy like me who doesn't get to the gym as much as he did when he was twentysomething (i.e. getting a little soft in the middle) and said "put this on while we take a photo of you from behind". A different number would have been better.
Yes, I'm being picky, because each year they try to outdo themselves, and mostly end up being cheesy.
Also, while I'm sure BGS loves the Rice quote on there, we need to stop going with "return to glory" themes that focus on past achievements of 80 years ago. I understand there's nothing more recent to focus on as far as possitive achievements, but how about we at least think about something as simple as "Fighting Irish Football" or "Here Come The Irish".

I hate the Coliseum with a passion. Always have, always will. When the Irish play in LA, I will go to the OC Alumni Club breakfast (although the last time, the breakfast was after the game and Coach Weis didn't bring any players!) and I will do the pep rally at the Anaheim Hilton and then have a BBQ with friends. The guy that owns the OC Tavern in San Clemente is a big Irish supporter so there will probably be some good game watch parties there. as the artist for the todd marinovich "i've fallen and can't get up" shirt, i say thank you. i never really thought that shirt made much of an impact, but it's still one of my favorite tee-shirt designs...
second...
i've resigned myself to the fact that the "shirt" just won't measure up anytime soon. the decision making process has too many steps along the way, and design by committee hardly is ever any good. still, i feel proud supporting a good cause, and my university at the same time. sure i wish that the "shirts" were a bit simpler (gimme a gold helmet and the words "irish" or "ND" and i'll be more than happy...) i understand how the "shirt" is created, and yet will wear the "shirt" with pride for what it stands for.
(of course whether or not any individual year's shirt makes it into my wardrobe after the football season is over, IS probably an aestetic decision, but i wouldn't dare boring you with the details...) bigapledomer | Email | Homepage | 04.21.08 - 2:56 pm | #

Huge kudos for your, IMHO, awesome design. When I was a skinny high school sophomore, I started my first varsity basketball game against, then senior, Todd Marinovich. The SI article on him had just been released about him becoming a superstar even though everyone in our area knew his nickname was Marijuana-vich. On a free throw, I congratulated Todd on the article and he just skoffed at me and told me to F-off. What a jerk! So I wore your design very proudly for a long time even after he graduated. GO IRISH,
Thanks for the input; I have been to the OC Tavern following surfing and noticed the large ND banner. Always great to have another Irish-friendly venue for gamewatch.
Along with Stanford, the Rose Bowl was a lot of fun last year. And speaking of tee shirts, my brother came up with a good one that we wore to the UCLA game last year:
In huge font on the front, it read
NOTRE DAME
NATIONAL CHAMPIONS:
1994 2003 2005
followed by teeny tiny font "in fencing"
On the back was a line drawing of a fencer with the ND logo (trademark violation!) on the uniform. We got more than a few puzzled looks. One old timer called me over, ready to chew me out for the inaccuracy until he realized our little joke. Hopefully, no offense to the Fighting Irish fencing team - we represented them well! OCmj- Along with any other Domers in the area, you are more than welcome at the festivities at my Casa in SJC when the Irish come out west. I have a nice mix of Irish fans and Trojans, so the banter is usually spirited, but good natured. My wife puts out a huge culinary spread and the bar (my area of responsiblitity) is always open. Hopefully, this year we will have something to cheer about. It has been a long time I have had to endure the Trojan fans coming to my house, drinking all my booze, eating all my food, and getting to mock me in my own home. This year I might require a cover charge for anyone in SC gear. GO IRISH!!! | Email | Homepage | 04.21.08 - 5:49 pm | #

By the way OCmj, the fencing shirt design sounds awesome! I was unable to make it to the game at the Rose Bowl. I was house and puppy sitting for some friends in Laguna. Looked like a great time. Stanford is always fun. Usually more Irish fans than Cardinal fans. Good tailgating up there too. GO IRISH!!! | Email | Homepage | 04.21.08 - 5:54 pm | #

Hey GO IRISH, your invitation sounds much more appealing than shelling out $60 for an awful, splinters-in-my-arse seat. And we're close by here in Laguna - SJC or Watts? Hmmm....an easy choice. I think you should charge my husband admission as well because he'll likely be wearing Gator garb. I know there have been a lot of negative comments on The Shirt, but if you've ever shopped for Gator gear, you might have a different opinion. They are truly gaudy and virtually unwearable whenever they incorporate that giant gator head.
I don't know if it would qualify as culinary cuisine, but I could resurrect the old Dublin Irish Stew recipe if necessary. OC mj | Email | Homepage | 04.21.08 - 7:00 pm | #

OCmj - Your husband can come in his Gator garb, but the price he will surely pay in verbal abuse will be payment enough. Irish stew sounds perfect! I will keep you posted as the date draws near for the time and menu. My wife would love another female guest. She will be wearing her #10 jersey that says "Mistress Quinn" on the back. Hopefully, your wife and I will be doing lots of assisted pushups that day...and I LOVE her choice of shirts! OC mj | Email | Homepage | 04.21.08 - 8:22 pm | #
