I don't know who the answer to #10 is, but he should be added to Charlie's staff immediately.

My son and I were at the answer to #1. The only bowl game I have ever attended. I thought I was lucky and offered by services to Charlie for the Fiesta Bowl vs. OSU trying to gets tickets, but, he never e-mailed me back.

The first bowl game was the 1925 Rose Bowl, the final game for the Four Horsemen. ND beat Stanford 27-10.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to actually start listing the answers...

That last question/answer sounds like Chris Zorich.

Or, Ditka (I know he didn't play for us, but it sounds a helluva-lot like him).

Or, maybe Charlie (after a tough interhall bowl matchup versus Grace Hall). He fails to mention the pork rinds he also latched onto, and his glee during those 72 hallway hours.

Stop it!

1) 1-1-94
2) Rose 1925
3) 4
4) 7
5) D - 10
6) Cotton
7) Rose 1925
8) c
9) Texas Texas AM Colo
10) Zorch?
11) Haw. 31 ND 24 (ND will lead 21 - 10 at halftime)

1. Jan 1 1994 ND 24 Texas A&M 21
2. ND defeated Stanford in the Jan 1 1925 Rose Bowl 27-10
3. ND won 5 consecutive Bowl Games from 1973 through 1979
4. 6??
5. D (10)
6.Cotton Bowl 7 times
7. 1973 Sugar Bowl
8. C
9. Texas, Texas A& M, Colorado
10. Chris Zorich
Extra Credit ND 31 Hawaii 28

It's not Zorich...

I know it's not Chris Zorich because, if I'm not mistaken, Zorich tragically found his mother dead in her hotel room after his last college bowl game.

I would wild guess that the quotation belongs to one of the Golic brothers.

Show my work, huh?

1) Easy... Cotton Bowl vs. Texas A&M, 24-21, game winning field goal by Kevin Pendergast.

2) Rose Bowl vs. Stanford, 1925

3) I've no idea, but I'll just copy go1r1sh's answer (5).

4) Hmmm... my first instinct was two (2), Texas and Colorado, but then I'm thinking Alabama and perhaps Georgia, but I've no idea, really. So I'll guess 4.

5) I can name 9 of them: Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, Cotton, Liberty, Gator, Independence, Insight. There might have been another in the 70s/early 80s. My answer: C (9)

6) Cotton Bowl, I can only think of four times, however: Texas once, Texas A&M three times.

7) I'm just gonna guess: Fiesta Bowl, vs. Ohio State, 2006

8) b. Women's Sports

9) Texas A&M, (three times in the Cotton Bowl, 1988, 1993-94), Colorado (Orange Bowl twice, 1990-91, Fiesta Bowl, 1995). The third I'm gonna guess LSU (Independence Bowl, 1997, Sugar Bowl, 2007, and a third sometime in the 70s/early 80s).

10) This sounds like a quote from after a championship, and from a lineman of some sort, so my guess is Andy Heck, as I believe '88 was his senior season.

#10--it's gotta be Reggie Ho.

2. Rose Bowl, a win versus Stanford

4. 3 times

6. Cotton
7. 2006 Fiesta Bowl
8. A, new construction
9. Colorado, Texas A&M, Texas
10. Joe Montana

Texas was number one three times, Alabama twice, Georgia once and Colorado twice.

Deferring to the vast knowledge base on this blog, I can only offer a small correction - we played Texas in the Cotton at least three times - the year we returned to bowl games (1970?) -- a respectable loss to #1 Texas; the following year - a glorious win to end the Longhorn's 30-game streak and teach the rest of CFB how to stop the wishbone; and 1977-78? when we beat Earl Campbell to grab the NC. Or has my memory turned to mush? One more thought - wasn't Texas ranked #1 before each of those games?

Good test. my answers:
1--Sugar, beat Florida
2--Rose, 1925 beat Indians of the Pine tree
3--4
4--4
5--7
6--Orange
7--Fiesta
8--minority scholarships
9--Bama, Texas, Colorado
10--Bettis

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......

Emil T is giving instructions.

1. Cotton Bowl, New Year's Day 1994 over Texas A&M

2. Rose Bowl, New Year's Day 1925. They beat Stanford.

3. Umm...5?

4. I know they did so in back to back Cotton Bowls against Texas. I'm not sure they've ever done so besides that, but I'll say 3.

5. Fiesta, Cotton, Insight, Gator, Aloha, Sugar, Rose, Independence, Orange. Nine.

6. Cotton.

7. On a lark, I'll say the 1996 Orange Bowl vs Florida State.

8. C

9. Texas...Alabama?...LSU?

10. Joe Montana after the Chicken Soup Game is my guess.

Extra: Notre Dame 31, Hawaii 20.

OK, I'll give this a shot - sounds fun.

1. January 1, 1994 - the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, we beat Texas A&M.

2. Rose Bowl vs. Stanford in 1927. We definitely won.

3. I'll guess the 5-game streak from the 70s. Can't think of any others.

4. I know we played Texas twice when they were #1, and Colorado when they were #1...so I'll go with 3.

5. I'll guess (d.) - 10 different bowls.

6. I think the Cotton Bowl.

7. Probably the Sugar Bowl against LSU a couple of years ago. That Superdome is a big sucker.

8. Hm. I'm guessing (c). Definitely couldn't be b.

9. Texas and Texas A&M for certain (I was at all of those A&M games myself). The third one has to be... Colorado -- I blocked out that last Colorado Fiesta Bowl pretty well though. Ugh.

10. That's a great quote. I'm going to guess Chris Zorich - I remember him in tears on the sideline after the '91 Orange Bowl loss on that BS clipping call.

The streak dies this year.

Boy,the longest streak had me.

Glad to see some people are not expecting a loss to HI. Guess the rest have a consistent half full glass.

#9 could it be Rocky Bleier?

1. 1994 Texas A&M
2. 1925 Rose Bowl & Won
3. Five
4. Seven
5. D(10)
6. Cotton
7. Rose Bowl
8. B
9. Texas, Texas A&M, Colorado
10. Rocky Bleier
11. ND 28 HU 24

#10 = Rocky Bleier

If not, it should have been Rock!

ND used to win bowl games?!

Notre dame has played the number one team 3 times
Alabama 1973
Georgia 1981
Colorado 1991
Notre Dames highest attendance
1991 Orange Bowl 77,062

Bleier never played in a bowl game.

Texas was number one in 69-70 and also 77. Alabama was number 1 in 73 and the 75 orange bowl. Georgia was number one in the Sugar Bowl. Colorado was number one in the 90 Orange Bowl and the 91 Orange Bowl.

If Paul Vernon Hornung had played in a bowl game, I would have picked him. Anybody who wins the Heisman when the team goes 2-8, had to be tough.

For god sakes, somebody guess question #10, it’s driving me crazy.

#10 is Joe Montana.

I read it recently in a blog about great ND comebacks, of which Joe was responsible for an amazing 75%.

just kidding about the 75%.

And yes, there was a day when we could get the come-from-behind win!

DB12, you are right about those vs.
number one games.

1) 1994 T A & M
2) 1925 rose Stanford
3) 5
4) 9 rose, sugar, cotton, orange, liberty, insight, aloha, liberty, gator
5) 8
6) cotton
7) sugar against georgia suprerdome
8) a new construction
9) texas, alabama, houston
10) Jerome Bettis

Ha! I found it, and the winner is.....
drum role please..... Joe Montana after the Houston game.

#10 is Joe Montana, 1979 Cotton Bowl, the chicken soup game.

It is Joe Montana.
Also to the Extra Cred.
ND 31
HW 20

it will be a scary game.

Haven't they all been scary? Even the Michigan game never felt out of reach, with that little McGuffie guy skedaddling all over the field.

Chris Zorich found his mom passed away at their home in Chicago

Well Joe Subway, at least we won't have to worry about McGuffie next year. I am not sure what his transfer destination is, though, so he may revisit us in another uniform in a couple of years.

Very cool quiz. I did really bad. LOL

BGS crew, is there any chance you could set up one of those "one-word about how you are feeling about the [bowl] game" post things like you did this year or last year? I believe it may have been done through a Google doc, but don't quote me on that.

Here's a question, did anyone read how much in gifts players can receive from bowl games? $500! Seems the NCAA really is doing everything they can to keep these players amateurs. Two bowl games are giving $300 gift cards. I don't know what the travel roster is like to bowl games, let's assume 55 players. That would be $16,500!! They should pool that money and start an investment portfolio.

ND players are receiving (among other things) Oakley sunglasses. I'm sure the players would have wanted the Alamo Bowl if they had a choice. Each player receives a 80Gb PS3.

Sorry to change the subject, great quiz by the way, but for all my fellow Canadian Irish fans, TSN just announced that they will be covering the bowl game....Sweet.

Thanks for the information, Mark. I didn't realize the players received anything. Except for the sun and sights in this case, that is. Six days and counting!

Dave

In case anyone is curious, here is the full list of what (in my opinion, unimpressive) stuff the players get for being in the Hawaii Bowl:

Hawai’i Bowl (Hawaii vs. Notre Dame)
Gifts: Kicker iKick500 iPod/iPhone dock, Kahala Aloha shirt, Oakley Hijinx sunglasses, Oakley backpack

http://awfulannouncing.blogspot....tball- bowl.html

I don't know, not that I really think players should get stuff for being in bowl games, but I think it's fair to say the players didn't pick this particular game for the gifts.

"TSN just announced that they will be covering the bowl game"

Yes! Once again, living in America's attic pays off!

10. Ned Bolcar or Stonebreaker

Yeah, a few years ago, the players each got an XBox360 for the Fiesta Bowl. Even the band members slept 2 to a room and got way more per diem meal money than was necessary for just eating.

Are the BGS guys working on some sort of preview of Hawaii's team this year? We knew all about the different position players of the regular season teams from the position previews, but I don't know that much about Hawaii this year. What sort of systems do they run? Are they any good? What should we watch for? What should we expect ND to do to exploit their weaknesses? That sort of thing. Thanks!

when does the first bowl game start?

no mames.

Vic Paul:

Speaking of Canadian related sports, ND is currently #1 in hockey.

Anyone in need a few good stocking stuffers?

http://www.amazon.com/New-Gold-S.../ ref=pd_sim_b_1

http://www.amazon.com/No-Excuses...725/ ref=ed_oe_h

Cheaper than coal, and they burn better, too.

I know where we can stuff them.

Great quiz!! Need some help: I will be visiting family in the northern Indiana area on the 24th. None of them care as much as I do about the game, and they have a very small TV. I was hoping someone could give me a good location where I can watch the game in the Michigan City/Chesterton/SB area. Also, does anyone know if they are doing a broadcast on campus??

Dave, Legends just upgraded all of their TV's. I ended up watching the ND UW game their with my wife and we enjoyed it. Campus is abandoned right now so there there should be room on gameday. Check with them to make sure they are open. http://www.legendsofnotredame.org/
