The sight of someone in a gold helmet running ALL OVER opposing defenses does much to warm the spirit. Even if he is unconscious. |
I think several members of our O-line should be converted to running back. Maybe Clausen too. We could field eleven running backs. |
Man was he fast... |
It's been a while since we've seen an ND back running all over and through USC... |

man. can we just break one 75 yard run this year? just one? |
If Gallop can't crack the lineup with the receivers that we have, how does he expect to do it at RB? That'd be like Sharpley switching over to play Safety. |
He's a nice change of pace guy and could give some depth as a 3rd down back. He's not going to start taking carries away from Hughes, Aldridge, and Allen, but I don't think it's a bad move. Unlike your Sharpley to safety example, Gallup has plenty of experience as a running back. |
It's nice to see a ND running back not be caught from behind for once |
Here's to hoping Tate really makes the most of his week of Spring ball. We could really use him as a complete WR next year, something like our version of Dorien Bryant. Man that would be a huge improvement. And maybe, just maybe Allen develops a little and we see some Brooks-like runs from him. |
I could watch that video of Brooks' unconscious run against Michigan all day. Sure he was super fast, but he was also TOUGH, which I think our backs have really lacked in recent history but Robert Hughes is bringing back. I imagine Armando Allen has comparable speed, I wonder why he's had so much trouble breaking a long run. Scheme? |
Thanks for the perspective, Pat. I don't know that much about change-of-pace and 3rd down backs aside from Kevin Faulk in New England. My analogy was less about experience and more about moving from a position where there aren't a lot of stars and clear-cut depth to one of the strongest and deepest positions on the team. Hopefully he'll be able to make an impact or at least push the guys ahead of him a little. Who's left at WR this spring? Grimes, Kamara, Paris, Tate, West... Floyd and Goodman in the fall. Man I hope the Kamara and Tate have magical sophomore seasons. |
The scatman. Wow. Thanks. Recently watched Marc Edwards on NDN run and destroy safeties and tiny corner people. I cried over both tapes. Oh where have all the flowers gone? |
Someday we will see things like this highlight reel again, I hope and pray. Please tell me Reggie Brooks has some sons? |
Brad, |
I am still very nervous about Haywood calling our offense. Wasn't the reason Weis was brought to ND was for his playcalling abilities? Is anybody else frightfully worried about this? |
No. It's not like Charlie will have no input at all. And, let's face it-- it can't get much worse. To be honest, I think I'd be more worried were Charlie calling plays this year. Not because I think he's bad at it, but because I think the whole team needs his attention more. |
How well does Barry Gallup pickup the blitz? |
Watching Brooks run over and thru the skunkbears was nothing but eye candy. |
On most of those plays there was not a devestating lead block. Also, on the USC runs there were 7 or 8 men in the box, and one of the others I think I counted 9. Depending on which way the run goes, half of them can not recover to make a tackle. All it takes a quick hole, vision and a good burst. After that, with a step a 4.6 guy will outrun a 4.4 guy to the endzone every time. Remember Becton against Florida State. |
one of the personal highlights of my young life was getting a wakeup call from Reggie Brooks at the summer football camp a few years back. |
Wow, that No. 20 from Michigan really whiffed. Glad he's not with our team. |
How would coach Tenuta describe Corwin's tackle attempt on Reggie? Great videos of a great Irish player. We will see those kinds of runs again soon. |
How I long for the glory days of the late 80's and early 90's. I almost forget how amazing Reggie Brooks is until I watch that clip. I also remember most of those runs were over a period of 2 years. |
While there may not have been a "devastating block" on those runs, there is a consistent push and that push was toward the secondary... |
I just learned that former Irish DT Wally Kleine ('82-'86) died from a massive heart attack on Sunday April 13th. He was only 43 years old. He was a great guy and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He will be laid to rest on Thursday in Midland, Texas. |
P.S. |
That made me smile! |
Those highlights were awesome, but I'm never gonna forgive BGS for reminding me of that Scat Man song - sh*t's gonna be stuck in my head all night long. And didn't they use that song to torment Latin American dictators that were holed up in their presidential palaces in the 90's? If not, they totally should have. |
It's kinda cool, that one can rewind and wind on youtube and watch the blocking keying in on certain positions. Certainly a blocking scheme of beauty. You can tell the o-line works together, are extremely disciplined, and tough. The push wasn't many yards on some plays, but they were able to stand the first guy up, and get after another one (knowing the running back will out maneuver a standing still D-linemen). They essentially had 1 guy block 2 guys. |
Football. |
Man I had to watch it 3 times. Reminded me of a back by the name of Eric Penik No#44 anybody else besides me remember him? That was Notre Dame football. Run it and run it well! |
Damn, Reggie had a rocket-type burst. Almost forgot. Someone get a hold of their breakfast cereal and feed it to Allen and Aldridge. |
Funny that no one commented on Harrison Smith, which was the lead in.(I too remember Reggie Brooks with great affection- does anyone remember his statistical feat as a rookie with Washington?) |
Too bad we can't line up in a 5-back Flying V. Gotta have 7 on the line of scrimmage. I suppose a couple could start on the line and then swing back around to form the V. |
Pat, |
No pun intended, just lazy typing. Fixed now. |
Of all the moves, I am looking at the change of Harrison Smith to LB in pass situations. Too many teams, including Michigan's new W.Va offense, will have 3-4 WR sets. ND may now be able to counter not just with nickle backs but additional speed and coverage from LBs. This move may also allow more speed for blitzes in these circumstances. |
The difference between our current offensive line and the one in the Brook's video is incredible. Look at those guys pushing D-lineman and Linebackers back 3 to 5 yards. I dont think I saw that once last year. If you look at the cut lanes Brooks had available, they truly speak volumes to the incredible line we had back then. He could have gone 6 different directions on most of those highlights and still picked up major yardage. Additionally, check out the downfield blocks. Incredible. Charlie has GOT to stress fundamentals this year. |
Speaking of running backs, it looks like Cierre Wood (the #1 ranked RB) has his list down to ND and UCLA. |
KMF....I am reading on another site that the feeling for that west coast running back is good. I believe the person comments was a USC fan. THey think he will commit this weekend. |
David - As far as I know, Baldwin signed a Letter of Intent with Pitt. |

Is it me or did everyone forget the fact that CBrown is the Michigan player who hit Brooks on that last highlight where he gets knocked out in the endzone. |
Actually CBrown is the #20 who whiffs on him when he spins and turns it upfield. |
It's amazing to see guys in gold helmets under their opponents pads and pumping their feet, pushing 'em BACK! Good things happen after a good push up front. |
what a terrible choice of song for a highlight reel |
What happens, after Jay bolts? |
