The sight of someone in a gold helmet running ALL OVER opposing defenses does much to warm the spirit. Even if he is unconscious.

I think several members of our O-line should be converted to running back. Maybe Clausen too. We could field eleven running backs.

Man was he fast...

It's been a while since we've seen an ND back running all over and through USC...

Jeremy

Sounds like Sam Young's been fielding punts; maybe we'll have a heavy-weight punt return team...

man. can we just break one 75 yard run this year? just one?

If Gallop can't crack the lineup with the receivers that we have, how does he expect to do it at RB? That'd be like Sharpley switching over to play Safety.

He's a nice change of pace guy and could give some depth as a 3rd down back. He's not going to start taking carries away from Hughes, Aldridge, and Allen, but I don't think it's a bad move. Unlike your Sharpley to safety example, Gallup has plenty of experience as a running back.

It's nice to see a ND running back not be caught from behind for once

Here's to hoping Tate really makes the most of his week of Spring ball. We could really use him as a complete WR next year, something like our version of Dorien Bryant. Man that would be a huge improvement. And maybe, just maybe Allen develops a little and we see some Brooks-like runs from him.

I could watch that video of Brooks' unconscious run against Michigan all day. Sure he was super fast, but he was also TOUGH, which I think our backs have really lacked in recent history but Robert Hughes is bringing back. I imagine Armando Allen has comparable speed, I wonder why he's had so much trouble breaking a long run. Scheme?

In a recent interview with Haywood, he said that "the days of a full-back lead blocking the back through the o-line are pretty much over." I think he said it's because linebackers have adjusted and can help out more or something. I guess it's up to the O-line to bring the smashmouth style play if we can't send a fullback to knock someone on their ass to clear a hole for the RB. (Note, how cheesily awesome is it that Reggie Brooks' initials are RB).

Thanks for the perspective, Pat. I don't know that much about change-of-pace and 3rd down backs aside from Kevin Faulk in New England. My analogy was less about experience and more about moving from a position where there aren't a lot of stars and clear-cut depth to one of the strongest and deepest positions on the team. Hopefully he'll be able to make an impact or at least push the guys ahead of him a little. Who's left at WR this spring? Grimes, Kamara, Paris, Tate, West... Floyd and Goodman in the fall. Man I hope the Kamara and Tate have magical sophomore seasons.

The scatman. Wow. Thanks. Recently watched Marc Edwards on NDN run and destroy safeties and tiny corner people. I cried over both tapes. Oh where have all the flowers gone?

Someday we will see things like this highlight reel again, I hope and pray. Please tell me Reggie Brooks has some sons?

Also, I would tend to disagree with Haywood on the FB position. Look at the NFL. Any team with a guy named Lorenzo Neal over the past 15 years or so has had one of the best rushing teams in the League. While the FB isn't used like it used to be, there is still something to be said for a devastating lead blocker.

Brad,

I bet if we had someone who was actually a "devastating lead blocker" that he would feel differently. Unfortunately Scwapp just hasn't fit that bill for whatever reason. OR, maybe Schwapp hasn't lived up to expectations because they're asking him to make cute fancy blocks instead of devastating lead blocks and we're not using his skills appropriately.

I remember ND had a fullback a few years ago who was pretty good. Our running game got much worse when he was out with injury. Can't think of his name, though.

I am still very nervous about Haywood calling our offense. Wasn't the reason Weis was brought to ND was for his playcalling abilities? Is anybody else frightfully worried about this?

No. It's not like Charlie will have no input at all. And, let's face it-- it can't get much worse. To be honest, I think I'd be more worried were Charlie calling plays this year. Not because I think he's bad at it, but because I think the whole team needs his attention more.

How well does Barry Gallup pickup the blitz?

Does that mean he'll be used like Junior Jabbie last year? Or will those carries/plays get covered by ND's other 3 horseman?

Watching Brooks run over and thru the skunkbears was nothing but eye candy.

On most of those plays there was not a devestating lead block. Also, on the USC runs there were 7 or 8 men in the box, and one of the others I think I counted 9. Depending on which way the run goes, half of them can not recover to make a tackle. All it takes a quick hole, vision and a good burst. After that, with a step a 4.6 guy will outrun a 4.4 guy to the endzone every time. Remember Becton against Florida State.

I think several things have been missing. A good passing game has left linebackers deeper, making it tougher to break a big run. Ironic?

Second, we have been brutally bad at opening holes for running the last two years. The pass has set up a spread blocking scheme rather than a power running mentality. If you look at those runs, the linemen fire off the ball and hit people and move them. Now, we let the linemen spread and run through. Not as effective.

Third, Walker had vision, but the switch in defensive scheme has kept people away from the line his two years under Weis. I think Allen, Aldridge and Hughes all lack one or the other.

one of the personal highlights of my young life was getting a wakeup call from Reggie Brooks at the summer football camp a few years back.

"hey sleeping beauty, get ready for practice"

Wow, that No. 20 from Michigan really whiffed. Glad he's not with our team.

Nice cath Pat.

How would coach Tenuta describe Corwin's tackle attempt on Reggie? Great videos of a great Irish player. We will see those kinds of runs again soon.

On the position change on offense, I am thinking a running back with the hands of a wide receiver might be a great option. I hope Barry finds the field for a few snaps this year. I would love to see Paskorz channel the energy of a Mark Edwards-type player, but he'll have to take the hair high and tight first.

How I long for the glory days of the late 80's and early 90's. I almost forget how amazing Reggie Brooks is until I watch that clip. I also remember most of those runs were over a period of 2 years.

Hey Blue-Gray Guys,

How many of you are near South Bend. I think it would be a good idea to have a tailgate for the Blue-Gold game sometime. Has that ever happened and I just missed something?

I post here periodically, but visit the site daily. I enjoy reading posts from other regular visitors and think it would be awesome to be able to meet some of the people who I've come to know on this site through their postings.

Who know's, maybe we might even see tOSU is Righteous :) Probably not, because he knows we'd take him behind Legends for an old-fashioned butt-whoopin!!

While there may not have been a "devastating block" on those runs, there is a consistent push and that push was toward the secondary...

I forgot Brooks had break away speed. Wow.

I just learned that former Irish DT Wally Kleine ('82-'86) died from a massive heart attack on Sunday April 13th. He was only 43 years old. He was a great guy and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He will be laid to rest on Thursday in Midland, Texas.

R.I.P. Wally.

P.S.
There is an obit on Wally Kleine at http://www.blueandgold.com

That made me smile!

Ah, the good ol' days.

Those highlights were awesome, but I'm never gonna forgive BGS for reminding me of that Scat Man song - sh*t's gonna be stuck in my head all night long. And didn't they use that song to torment Latin American dictators that were holed up in their presidential palaces in the 90's? If not, they totally should have.

It's kinda cool, that one can rewind and wind on youtube and watch the blocking keying in on certain positions. Certainly a blocking scheme of beauty. You can tell the o-line works together, are extremely disciplined, and tough. The push wasn't many yards on some plays, but they were able to stand the first guy up, and get after another one (knowing the running back will out maneuver a standing still D-linemen). They essentially had 1 guy block 2 guys.

Football.

Role v. roll

Man I had to watch it 3 times. Reminded me of a back by the name of Eric Penik No#44 anybody else besides me remember him? That was Notre Dame football. Run it and run it well!
Gooo Irish

Damn, Reggie had a rocket-type burst. Almost forgot. Someone get a hold of their breakfast cereal and feed it to Allen and Aldridge.

Yeah, I assume Gallop will backup Allen as the speed back and learn the same plays. Was kind of hoping Golden Tate would see the ball once and awhile from the backfield this year, too. His high school highlight reel had plenty of crazy good RB runs. And we know he has the speed, too.

Funny that no one commented on Harrison Smith, which was the lead in.(I too remember Reggie Brooks with great affection- does anyone remember his statistical feat as a rookie with Washington?)
Harrison Smith was highly regarded coming out of HS. Last year there was a mention by Charlie that Harrison and Tate seemed to be able to lope around the field faster than anyone else. I was waiting for him last year, but now am glad they kept him eligible.
I predict big things.
Those of you who go the game, bring back a ful report.

Too bad we can't line up in a 5-back Flying V. Gotta have 7 on the line of scrimmage. I suppose a couple could start on the line and then swing back around to form the V.

Pat,

"As part of his new offensive coordinator roll [sic: role], Coach Haywood . . "

If Haywood is as fat as Charlie, maybe "roll" is more appropriate. Pun intended?

No pun intended, just lazy typing. Fixed now.

Of all the moves, I am looking at the change of Harrison Smith to LB in pass situations. Too many teams, including Michigan's new W.Va offense, will have 3-4 WR sets. ND may now be able to counter not just with nickle backs but additional speed and coverage from LBs. This move may also allow more speed for blitzes in these circumstances.
An All-Smith Linebacking core should also include Kevin Smith, Senior, LB in addition to Brian, Harrison, Toryan and Scott.

The difference between our current offensive line and the one in the Brook's video is incredible. Look at those guys pushing D-lineman and Linebackers back 3 to 5 yards. I dont think I saw that once last year. If you look at the cut lanes Brooks had available, they truly speak volumes to the incredible line we had back then. He could have gone 6 different directions on most of those highlights and still picked up major yardage. Additionally, check out the downfield blocks. Incredible. Charlie has GOT to stress fundamentals this year.

Speaking of running backs, it looks like Cierre Wood (the #1 ranked RB) has his list down to ND and UCLA.

Methinks we don't stand a chance against the weasely tactics of Neuheisel.

KMF....I am reading on another site that the feeling for that west coast running back is good. I believe the person comments was a USC fan. THey think he will commit this weekend.

Just what I see at another site. Maybe that would get the ball rolling with some more recruits.

Pat, have you heard that Johnathon Baldwin may still come to ND now that his SAT score are up?

David - As far as I know, Baldwin signed a Letter of Intent with Pitt.

David

I thought Jonathon Baldwin signed with Pitt. I don't think they can back out very easy although I may be wrong.

Is it me or did everyone forget the fact that CBrown is the Michigan player who hit Brooks on that last highlight where he gets knocked out in the endzone.

Actually CBrown is the #20 who whiffs on him when he spins and turns it upfield.

It's amazing to see guys in gold helmets under their opponents pads and pumping their feet, pushing 'em BACK! Good things happen after a good push up front.

Basic stuff.

what a terrible choice of song for a highlight reel

What happens, after Jay bolts?
Each Domer fanatic revolts!
Now Jay can't annoy
Like Father Malloy
but he can draw up plays like... Bob Davie.
