I sure am glad the days of men wearing suits EVERYWHERE has gone by the wayside. That would be so annoying. Great glimpse to the past through those photos, though.

That Zibby article was a fun read. I hope he finds success in the NFL.

"following the playoff exploits of the best hall left on campus after the closing of Flanner Hall."

You must have misread the article, they don't mention O'Neill at all.

Is O'Neill even a hall?

Thought the birddog analysis was very good. But like all after action reports it is hard to say even if an assigment had beed picked up, who is to say the ND player would not have shed the block. What if Tenuta & Brown committed more to the box-that was available to them and they chose not to. Guess I feel that regardless of miscues, the D played well. I was particularly pleased with Ian Williams.
Separate note: With Blanton playing so well and Darrin comming back, the corner position is going to be very crowded. Not necessarily a bad thing but I wonder how it will play out. Does anyone know how Slaughter is progressing and if he is practicing as a safety?

Re: Birddog. It's all well and good that he knows how the triple option should be played but the reality is that there are few games where everyone reacts prfectly and less where everyone executes perfectly. The reason the linemen could not get to the middle linebacker was that the Dtackle or Dlinemen lined up and attacked in a way that shielded the backers and the backer reacted too quickly for the lineman or linemen to get him. Birddog shows the 24 yard TD play to White. It succeeds only because a less experienced player bites on the QB rather than staying with his assignment. If he does stick, it is a significant Navy negative yardage play. Of course, what we saw all day was defense, often one on one with the Navy offense and defense making the play. They weren't perfect but they were damn good.

the interhall football piece left me with a feeling of intense home-sickness and longing to be a student again.

on another note, can we start talking about how USC is going to embarrass us yet?

Gutsmo,
Right on target.

Interesting the way the Navy blogger says that the loss stung so much because the game was "so winnable".

That sounds familiar somehow.

Pat: Why no love for having first posted the link to the Page2 article on interhall football in the comments on "9 minutes over B'more"? My one solid contribution goes totally overlooked.

When people ask Tom Zbikowski what he's up to now, it shouldn't really come as a surprise.

That was the subject matter of the famous "It's not football, it's Notre Dame football", starring Father Riehle and Joe Montana, right?

As a former LB/RB/Coach at Siegried Hall, that ESPN piece made me want to put the pads back on again. Knute was right about how how much you can learn about real life from football. As someone who manages others for a living now, I used a lot what I learned on the field early on in my career. Thrust into a leadership Defensive Captain/Coach role my senior year, it was the first time in my life I was in charge of others and had the responsibility of motivating people. To be honest, despite going to the championship game that year and enjoying success there is so much that I would have changed about the way I coached that year. A year later, I used alot of what I learned on the field in the real world learning from my mistakes I made that senior year. So thank you Knute for the Interhall Football program and your vision. If there are any current undergrads reading this now who are not playing interhall football and have not yet been convinced to at least try out, I leave you with my favorite memory playing defense against Fisher Hall in the semi-finals in front of Ara Parseghian. I just got back up from making a play in the backfield lining up for next one. It's like 3rd and 13, I see the QB drop back, notice the TE doing a in pattern and blow him up crossing the middle. Pass Incomplete. Signal Punt Team. Jogging off the field, Ara Parseghian comes over and says "nice hit." If that doesn't make you want to play football, transfer to Duke.

BGS, thanks for pointing out the ESPN article, all the great work you guys do and reminding me about what ND football is all about.

I'll be at the game this week. Undecided on whether to wear green, or my hawaiian shirt for the prized recruit that will be there.

Opinions aren't worth anything, but this Florida journalist thinks Notre Dame would be a fantastic next stop for Urban Meyer:

Go Ramblers! Papa John making us proud. ND '00!

Several items:

1. I am pretty sure Seigfried is a woman's dorm. Not sure when they started letting guys play there.
2. Also not sure what O'neill is. Maybe a new building dedicated to liberal studies?
3. Pat/Jay I am a big fan of the season running stats you show, but you sort of down played the improvement in the offense over the season in your post below. Every single commenter complains they are fired up not because of wins and losses but because they see no improvement. From a statistical standpoint, this is nonsense and perhaps highlighting the improvement would be enlightening. (Please don't mistake this for suggesting how to run your own blog)
4. I really hope Zibby ends up with a solid NFL career. I listened to far too many people bitch about him being a crappy cover man to see him not end up on top. That kid made more game-changing plays than anyone I can remember. (and that includes Rocket, Watters, Bettis, etc.)
5. I believe Golden has a bit of Zibby in him on punt returns. He can't quite handle the same beating (yet), but he too has an unhealthy aversion to the fair catch which I think we will be very pleased with in the future.

Michael, Siegfried WAS a women's dorm, until they closed Flanner and Grace. The tower refugees were divided between O'Neill (yes, a dorm), Keough, and Siegfried. Pasquerilla East, Pasq West, or Knott may also have become male dorms, but I can't remember. I believe it's the first and only time a women's dorm was converted into a men's dorm. Most of the time men's dorms get neutered...except Zahm, which never had any balls to begin with.

The worst part of the interhall article was that they beat Morrissey. Fight On! Black and Gold to Victory! (Even if there is no more dirty dozen...)

I'll bet our favorite heavyweight boxer is the first person in the Ravens locker room that Ray Lewis wouldn't dare get in a fistfight with.

Grace went to Keough and O'Neill, Flanner went to Siegfried and Knott. The girls that were in Siegfried and Knott went to Welsh and McGlinn. O'Neill, Keough, Welsh, and McGlinn are the four new dorms that became known as West Quad. My freshman year was the second year that O'Neill and Keough were open, and the first year for the new girls dorms. Many a pep rally featured the chant "Siegfried's a girls dorm".

I want to be an undergrad again.

ND Alum, 2001

Edit...I lived in O'Neill all four years. We were a terrible football team back then.

Second edit...but our hockey and soccer teams were pretty decent. 1998 interhall hockey champions.

Dear Pat:

Don't you mean since the closing of Grace Hall?

Keep up the good work.

How can you all forget the Mighty Carroll Hall Vermin?! We will scratch your eyes out in a cloud of dust!

Can I call for a SCORE PREDICTION?

Ramblers rule baby! Onward to victory for Siegfried!

WAY TO SEND OUT THE SENIORS CHARLIE, YOUR TIME IS UP.........

I have noticed that everyone has a 'say' into what our AD said, including me. One can read any of his/her negative/supportive feeling into what he said. Why not just take his words as they were said without readng your/my perceptions into it. As I read the comments I see or read manyh of the ideas the writers stated. CW will be here for at least one more year. Why no get behind him and the players? Dislike CW if you want but don't rag on our playeres.
