Good luck to Munir. Nice to see a young man handling this type of situation like, well, a man.

God Bless LSU. I don't care how badly they whooped us last year. They totally redeemed themselves with me this year.

Death to tOSU (The Over-rated State University)!

Oh, and by the way, how terrible is the Big Ten now? If it wasn't so enjoyable, it'd be sad.

Does anyone know the exact number of guys (including the incoming freshmen)that we have on scholarship right now?

Our only strength of schedule is from the Big 10 and USC. It's not good for the Big 10 to go down the toilet in bowl games.

I was at last years Sugar Bowl and learned to hate LSU fans. Several obnoxious printed T shirts read: Notre Dame swallows.

Anyway, I wish we had a defensive secondary like LSU. They were all over their receivers.

Skilled players who are beaten out for playing time by more skilled players have three choices: 1) keep on working for playing time while getting a degree; 2) quit the team while staying at the school to get a degree; and 3) leave the school to attempt to play and get a degree at another school.
As recruiting has improved dramatically at ND, greater numbers of skilled players have arrived or are arriving on the scene. All of ND's transferring players were skilled but were beaten out for playing time by other more highly skilled players. They believed, however, that they had enough skills to go elsewhere and compete for more playing time than they could foresee at ND. So, they all chose option # 3.
What is so mysterious or unusual about that?
I think we should be thanking our lucky stars that ND has finally gotten to the point where players that cannot successfully compete at ND are skilled enough to be able to go elsewhere and play.

Fighting Binny - If you count players like Thomas Bemenderfer and Eric Maust, as well as the 22 committed recruits, ND has 82 players on scholarship for 2008.

3 5th year guys, 15 seniors, 24 juniors, 18 sophomores, 22 incoming freshman.

So baring any more changes, Charlie can offer three more recruits, or two more recruits and award a walk-on a scholarship next year.

CW's 1st yr=14
2nd =23
3rd =18
5th yrs. = 3
presently =22
Maust(sp) = 1
Bemester(sp) 1
Yeatman 1

Well, maybe Michigan will step up the competition in the Big Ten. I intensely dislike the conference, but their pitiful performance is bad for us too. I am also mystified by the disparity between the big ten and the sec. I don't completely believe it's a speed issue. If it's just an issue of the big ten being slow to accept some advances in college football, then it's correctable. Michigan, frankly, looked awesome in their bowl game and may have given LSU a run for their money had they played each other.
I think it will be tough to recruit kids from FL, CA, and TX to go live in South Bend (until we start winning big at least). So, we better have kids in big ten country who have the athleticism of sec players!

What is the date of National signing day? Need to mark that on the calendar so I can be by my computer!

Big props to Munir Prince for handling this the right way. After the season ended, no big drama, and he even tried to tough it out an extra year when he really wasn't happy. I hope he moves on and does some great things at Missouri.

The guys who are coming back for another year are really the guys who I wanted to come back, so that's good news. Probably the best news I heard all day today (to Terrail Lambert and me both, most likely) is that Manningham from UM is coming out for the NFL Draft. That makes me very happy.

I believe it's February 7th, Dave ...

No kidding about Manningham. I will be happy if I don't have to hear Musburger talk about "Super Mario" another year.

Is Michigan going to be any good at all next year? They are losing Hart, Long, Henne, Manningham, Arrington, and maybe even Mallett. Additionally, aren't they replacing an up-and-coming defensive coordinator in Ron English with one of RichRod's boys from WV. Last time I checked, the Big East wasn't one of the best conferences in coaching defense.

Additionally, it looks like the poodle may be traveling out of SoCal for the NFL. That would be awesome. I bet he is just playing the money game though. Why leave USC when you are the closest thing to an NFL team in LA already?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/ne...tory? id=3188045

I don't see Michigan being that good next year, either. Maybe that's just wishful thinking, but they're losing a ton of guys on offense (Arrington seems to be coming out as well) and learning a completely new offense. I really think ND should win that game next year. (Will they? Have no clue.)

As for WVU's defense, I just looked it up and they were ranked #7 overall in total defense and #8 in scoring defense. Not too shabby.

In my opinion, Carroll would be an idiot to leave USC. He is pretty much guaranteed to continue winning there and contend for a national title every few years. He should just be happy with being an excellent college coach and not worry about the NFL. (However, him leaving SC would be excellent for ND, so....)

National Signing day is Feb 6th.

Guys, who are Thomas Bemenderfer and Eric Maust?

I don't want Carroll to leave. I want him there when we finally beat them . . .

Greg,
You just indicted yourself by not knowing who Thomas Bemenderfer is. He's more than just a walk-on lineman, he is a legend. Maust is a punter.

For more on Thomas Bemenderfer:

http://www.irishroundtable.com/?p=1155

Ah yes, sorry. I don't know the names as well as you guys!

Greg,
Say ten Hail Bem-ies and all will be forgiven.

Thanks, Pat and Jim. This just in from the "please God... please" department. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/ne...tory? id=3188045 I'm tired of getting atomized by this man's football team!

Oh, you guys were already talking about it. My bad.

Recent news states that Bartley Webb is gone also. Injury problems seem to have ended his football playing days, but he is believed to be staying at ND.

Judge
You must have only saw the back of the T-shirts. I was also there and the front said Rudy Sucks. That had to be the worst time of my life. Not only did we get beat, but if I heard Tiger bait one more time, well you get the point.

Those Bemenderfer Chuck Norris-isms are absolutely awful.

Sorry.

Bemenderfer has been immortalized in song! Just ask Mike Frank.

On another note, while searching for data regarding the CB (Urban Liar)that was NOT related to ND, I found this on a Michigan blog:

As Stonum revealed in the video interview, numerous suitors were telling him he’d never fit into the new offense. He even gave a cursory look at Arizona State and Cal.

However, one school's persistence trumped all others and they were definitely the biggest threat to the Maize & Blue. The University of Florida stayed on the four star pass-catcher well all the way through. Things crescendoed recently after a conversation with Urban Meyer. According to Stonum, Meyer had a compelling reason why he should become a Gator. “He told me that he talked to Coach Carr and Coach Soup and that they told him that I would be a much better fit in the Florida offense than I would be in the one at Michigan,” Stonum recalled. “I thought, ‘wow, my coaches are selling me out.’ I confronted them about it. I asked Coach Carr and Coach Soup about it and they said they never talked to that guy and that there was no way they ever said anything like that and that they think I should be a Wolverine. I believed them. Right then, I knew just how Florida rolled.”

Now maybe my FL alum spouse will believe CB is truly a scumbag.

It's official. Mallet's gone and probably headed to Tenn. This is the story on ESPN.

I believe Webb may be on academic scholarship now that his playing days appear to be over.

Just curious, and maybe somebody here will know the answer. How many guys transfer out of Southern Cal in any typical year. I am aware of Emmanuel Moody transferring to Florida (he's eligible in '08), but it seems that even with all their talent and depth, the kids just wait their turn, or, if the shoe fits, resign themselves to not contributing much on Saturdays. SC gave some garbage minutes to a formerly heralded senior running back (vs Illinois) who never played much, and a big story was made about how he was so loved by his teammates, yada, yada, yada. My question is how do other programs who have had big recruiting successes stack up to ND in their ability to retain and return their players for four years? Thanks in advance to anyone who might be able to shed some light on the topic.

Anyone think that Carroll could be looking because the whole Reggie Bush scandal is probably going to come down on the Trojans this year; hence, tarnishing everything he has done? In essence, running away before it all hits the fan . . .

If Pete Carroll were to take the Falcons' job, it would prove that either he, or Arthur Blank, is completely and certifiably insane. The Falcons' HC position might the the worst in the league right now, and Pete should ask for a 5 years/ $50 M guarantee. He'd be crazy to want or accept the Atlanta job, and Blank would have to be be Dan Snyder-crazy to guarantee $11 M a year for a head coach.

On the other hand, can you imagine what would happen to that program if Carroll left and then soon after they got hit with NCAA sanctions? Talk about a (near?) death spiral.

can someone explain how nd was "effectively operating at NCAA probation levels scholarship-wise"? sorry, i did not catch that in the past few years.

From the Tribune a few days ago, a link to a brief Omar Hunter interview from the AA game. While nobody around these parts seemed to be happy about the situation, it is nice to see this passage: [Omar] called Irish assistants Bill Lewis and Corwin Brown "the best recruiters I met this year."

http://blogs.chicagosports.chica...-hunter- on.html

someone prevosuly mentioned that they despise LSu fans b/c of the sugar bowl ast year. i can't think of any fan base worse than tOSU (right up there with UM and SC). they are without a doubt the most pompous SOBs that i've ever encountered (including SC fans!). every time they had a 60+ yd play they would all rub it in my face. my only redemming quote was "maurice clarett." anyway, munir price handled this situation very well. unlike demetrious jones and carufel he stuck out this year and quietly decided to transfer back home to mizzou. good luck to munir.

doofus,

We had many fewer scholarship football players on the team than we are permitted. That was not because we were barred from having more (as would be the case if the NCAA limited our scholarships as a sanction), but rather because the molder of men (Ty Willingham) elected not to recruit more. In other words, we were operating at a self-imposed disadvantage.

Sunday Morning Quarterback, which can be logged onto from BGS, has a article stating that Don Yeager of SI has a book publishing on Jan. 15, the excoriates U$C and Reggie Bush. Check it out. 2nd or 3rd story on scroll.

I for one would like to beat Pete Carroll one more time before he goes anywhere. I've been looking forward to that day for 7 long years.

Voice,

There is nothing more seductive and more powerful than being in complete control of an NFL franchise - the biggest pro league on earth, the biggest prize (Super Bowl) on the planet.
Few are given control in this manner: Holmgren comes to mind - anyone else recently?

I'm not so sure about that story saying Mallet would be transferring to Tennessee. From what I've read Mallet's own father said his son was also looking at Texas A&M and Arkansas as well as UT. Now two of Michigan's former assistant coaches were in Knoxville the past couple of days interviewing with Phil Fulmer for some open positions on Fulmer's offensive coaching staff but as of now nothing has come out from UT on this subject. The Vols did hire Flordia's running back coach away from the CB however.

I believe USC lost 3-5 players this year to transfer.

Good luck to Munir. I think he is a casualty of ND's rising talent levels. I wouldn't be surprised to see a receiver or two leave by next year.

Caroll is probably playing USC to pay him more. With all that talent, they should have won 4 championships. I agree with nothing worse then tOSU fans. I hope we never play them for that reason alone. It was great watching them get all abnoxious in the 1st quarter, then quite as a mouse at the end of the game (reminded me of that PSU game a couple years ago with all them goofballs that painted their faces blue and then had to pack up at halftime to head back to PA).

Although, I heard WV fans keying a kickers car for a missed kick and giving Rodriguez death threats. ND fans are far and away the best.

mikes1160,

I'm 99.9% certain that in his second go around with the Redskins Joe Gibbs pretty much had complete control of that team.

Wardo4,

O$U fans send their own players death threats when they make mistakes in games. I've seen two interviews with different players from different years at O$U who both said that it happened. IMO they're hands down the worst fans in the country.

Why wouldn't Pete Carroll consider a move to the Atlanta Falcons if he would be given almost complete control of the Falcons + a salary that it would take to lure him from USC? Another factor that might influence his decision was that his previous tour in the NFL wasn't that successful. Maybe he wants to prove he can be on top in the NFL as well. Finally, I am intriqued with the idea he might believe he will be tarnished forever if the Bush deal explodes during this coming season.

Voice,

Here is a link that discusses the very matter you bring up about the lack of USC transfers.

http://www.aaroncorp.org/aaron- c...ews08272007.php

I also came across SC's 2007 roster. What struck me about it is the number of redshirts. I admit, since ND's policy is not to redshirt, I have no idea what is typical. At a glance, there seem to be a lot of little red shirts here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ 200...s_football_team

I was in the super market yesterday and this snot nosed bagger looked at my sweatshirt and made some comment about ND's schedule, and something to the effect that we only play service academies and weak sisters. I asked him who he thinks is better. He said Ohio State. I said you mean to tell me that Kent State, Akron, Youngstown, Indiana, Minnehaha, et al are tougher than Navy, who won 9 games and went to a bowl? Same with Air Force?

It really pisses me off that these conference schools unabashedly schedule patsies then bitch about ND's schedule. All the more reason to love Appy State.

gwzimm,

Was that before or after "paper or plastic"? :>)

A bagger, that's hysterical

OC mj thank you very much for the link!

Knoxville Irish, I don't like being the contrarian, but I am pretty sure that the two headed nincompoop of Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato were actually Joe Gibbs' puppeteers in Washington. Steve Czaban has a nice little column on the matter today at:

http://www.czabe.com

Two things:

1. Why is the Urban Myth being referred to here as "CB"? I seem to have missed that one.

2. Regarding the complete control for NFL coaches topic: Listening to the radio this morning, sports talk hosts were trying to name Super Bowl winning coaches who also had complete control over player personnel. They could name them on one hand, and didn't even need all the fingers. Point being, if Poodle's biggest requirement for returning to the NFL is to have complete control, then if history tells us anything he is setting himself up for strike three in his NFL attempts. Especially if it is in Atlanta.

it stands for chinless bitch, indyesq

Voice,

I have to admit that being 500 or so miles away from the DC area I don't keep up with the Redskins the way that I used to. I still remember those awful signings that Snyder made several years ago, Jeff George, Dieon Sanders, Bruce Smith etc....all that money and we got what out of it? In any event I guess I was under the impression that Gibbs had more control over personnel moves, signings, etc than he actually had. My bad.

The Poodle also likes the California lifestyle. Maybe he's holding out for an NFL franchise in LA. If that's the case, we'll be stuck with him forever.

Thx, bcnd.

...I have watched Terrell Lambert for the last three years...I'm sure he's a fine lad...but he can't play Division 1 football...

jim / redondo beach,

Just an FYI, your act is getting pretty tired. You must have never watched Mr. Rogers.

...I have watched Mr. Rogers...and he could outplay Lambert

...actually, I have watched Mr. Rogers...and he could outplay Mr. Lambert...

I'm all for calling Urban Lier a chinless bitch, but the initials CB conflict with our own wonderful Corwin Brown. Perhaps we could call him Chinless Lier, or CL. Especially after that little bit about telling a WR that his own coaches were selling him out.

i just heard rumors about possible sc sanctions...? here's the catch 22: i'd love to see troy get sacked and burn but i'd also love to see ND beat the poodle and a full sc team. regardless the ncaa will never punish a team (save the U and smu) like davie and silly willie punished ND

As for Mr. Hunter, he just didn't want to play nose guard. It's pretty simple.

I guess the coaching staff didn't feel comfortable saying "Sure, you play DE!" with Ethan Johnson and Sean Cynwar recruited to that position.

I'm not all that negative, but I too have watched Terrell Lambert get "beat like he stole something" for what seems like my entire adult life.

Michigan appears to be imploding offensively.

The Poodle may leave before all the "Bush" hits the fan.

Net result from May, Wilbon, Saunders, et al.--ND has had to schedule "patsies" like Michigan and USC to win games!

LOL!

I have a hard time believing Belichick doesn't have the final say on personnel matters with New England, although he's helped enormously by being able to trust Pioli with a lot of the work.

cb = Urban "chinless bitch" Meyer
CB = Corwin Brown

Agree?

Getting out my chisel and about to set in stone.

Voice

aka: cb = classless bitch

cb= calloused bastard

C'mon fellas. The guy has no friggin chin!!

Did anybody out there ever take criminolgy at N.D. under Professor Vasoli? He taught that for many years it was accepted that men with recessed chins were predisposed to crime and criminal behavior. Of course that theory was debunked, but every time Urban poaches a recruit, I think about it!

LMAO, Voice! I'm on board with cb because despite his stature, he's a very small man.

...if June Jones can leave Hawaii for SMU...Carroll can leave SC for Atlanta...

Thanks OC mj!
I will just probably continue to type out 'chinless bitch' in its full 13 letter glory because it gives me so much pleasure to do so. It gives me a major keyboardasm.
Except for his gigantic bucket of a head (sans chin, of course), Urban is not a large man. And, as you note, poaching and bad mouthing N.D. makes him quite puny.

Chinless Bucketheaded Bitch...now you can enjoy a longer keyboardasm.

You're welcome.

I haven't smoked a cigarette in many years, but I am pretending.

Would that be regular or menthol? I wish someone would invent a healthy cigarette!

Benson & Hedges Menthol Light 100's. Ah, memories...

Anybody else here note that the chinless bucketheaded bitch (boy I like that!)has lost two of his assistant coaches within the past week? John "Doc" Holliday, who was Florida's associate head coach has left the CBB's staff to go back to West Virginia. Earlier in the week the TN Vols hired Stan Drayton the former running backs coach for the Gators to take the same position in Knoxvile. According to the story that was in the Knoxville News Sentinel (I wish I could provide the link), Meyer was not too happy when Phillip Fulmer asked for permission to talk to Drayton about the open position and when Drayton accepted the offer from UT Meyer apparently went off in a heated manner.

I guess it would be fair to say that the poacher doesn't take kindly to being poached himself.

...you guys are a class act...jeeze...arn't you aware that CW is no oil painting...

Jim/redondo beach:

Arrogance is one thing; lying is another. Meyer is fast losing respect among SEC and other coaches for his tactics. Ask Mark Reich.

Knoxville Irish, The bloom may be off the rose in Gainesville. They are supposed to be major contenders for next season's MNC, but I detect problems in Gatorland. They cannot continue to be carried on the back of Tim Tebow, and with all the skill talent that the chinless bucketheaded bitch (yes, that does feel sinfully good) has brought into the program, only Tebow and Percy Harvin ever touch the damn ball. Disgruntlements (is that a word?) are beginning to develop, too, and unlike what the Poodle has accomplished, namely stacking talent 4 deep and convincing everyone to patiently wait for their time to play, lots of Gator players are starting to have regrets. A lot of folks in Florida believe that they have peaked and the decline has started in earnest. Mark Richt, Nick Saban, Les Miles, Bobby Petrino, Houston Nutt, Steve Superior, Tommy Tuberville, Sly Croom, and Phil Fulmer are all good coaches and recruiters, and the main thing they have in common, other than a hatred for each other, is a hatred for the cbb. The cbb is a marked man. If FSU and Miami get their shit together anytime soon, that will further hasten Urban Liar's inevitable demise.

...y'all are like little boys that finally found their dicks...give it a rest. Meyer would have been the ND coach if it wasn't for his feeling that Florida could/would win a NC before ND. Jeeze...where did that come from?

Voice, Virginia Slims Menthol Longs...

And since you asked, "disgruntlement" is a word, meaning "a feeling of sulky discontent".

Jim, I don't think anyone here would argue that Weis is a saint and should be canonized. However, I do believe it would be front-page news (not buried on a fan blog spot) if a recruit came out and said something similar about Weis as the Michigan kid said about the chinless bucketed-headed bitch. (I giggle at the reference every time). In other words, I have to believe Weis and his staff are toeing the line with respect to recruiting. Otherwise, with all the scrutiny ND seems to garner, surely we would hear about it, and we'd REALLY have something to talk about besides our favorite cigarettes.

Knoxville Irish, you make a good point. I like to think the cbb is having "feelings of sulky discontent" about this poaching of his coaching staff.

...I'm sure this antipathy against successful coaches and the press will pass as soon as ND/Weis' W-L record get's back to .500 again. I believe in psychology, this disorder is called transference. But, don't worry...y'all will get better with a little time and wins...Until then...if this obnoxious behavior makes you feel better...then feel free to mentally pleasure yourself...

OC mj thanks for checking out the legitacy of 'disgruntlement', and for enlightening me on your brand. Our brands are both proud members of the Phillip Morris family. To me, non-menthol cigarettes are like decaffeinated coffee. Why bother? Are you 'reformed' like me, or do you still partake of the gilded leaf?

The strange twists and turns of a Notre Dame football blog...

I haven't enjoyed the calming effect of a good smoke for years (don't know how that works as they increase your heart rate). Even then, I was able to treat them much like dessert - in moderation. I would come in after a good run and light up! Now, the smell of someone else's fag really bugs me, although I keep my mouth shut and move the kiddies away if possible.

Sounds like me, although I enjoyed many more per day than you did. I swore when I quit that I wouldn't become another "Smoke-Nazi", and, like you, I keep my comments to myself when others light up in my vicinity. Although I do not like the smell of other's cigs, I sure liked my own (OMG, that's what George Carlin used to say about farts!). LOL!

Ha ha! George Carlin is wickedly funny. If one adds in the second-hand smoke we five kids endured from my dad while crammed into a station wagon (alongside the fishing gear) on the way to family vacations in WI or MN, physiologically speaking, I may have smoked a lot more. Thankfully, we are all still alive and smoke-free.

Jim/Redondo if you're still reading, Urban Meyer is the definition of obnoxious behavior, among other things. If you don't think outright lying and f'ing with these young kids is obnoxious and he shouldn't be called on it, then I don't know where you draw the line. I'd say this about any coach that acted in this manner, regardless of their W/L record. Do I detect a little optimism in your post, i.e., that Weis may actually achieve a .500 record? Shocking!
