Alex is hot.

Thanks to Sean for this week's gameday picture.

Nice pic! looks like a great day for Irish football

GOOOOOO IRISH! I'm fired up!

Joe Tiller is retiring? Hmmm...he made this series mean something again.

Alex is indeed hot but appears to be having a frizzy "bad hair day".

While on the topic, I'll throw out that the navy blue shirt thankfully has a slight slimming effect on Charlie.

That's enough of the BS, time for some 'ball.

Yeah, but I think Tiller got a little long in the tooth these last few years. Hope that comment doesn't come back and haunt me today.

I don't know, maybe I'm gay. Alex does nothing for me. Give me that side line reporter last week!

agree about Tiller's teeth - but three of the last five...ouch...

ok, I know the hair comments were bugging a few people a few weeks back (even though we were doing them tongue in cheek) but JC cut his hair!

Anello!!!!

Wow; no touchback since 2006. Ridiculous. GOOOOO IRISH! I hate Purdue.

Anello! I love this guy!!!

ditto!

Nice. that touchback stat is disgusting, though.

Short passing game again against us.

absolutely predictable: the ko will be crap and Anello will be first there.

Smith! I love this guy!!!!!!!

We have a significantly better D this year...but could we handle Oregon State????

were mccarthy's feet stuck in cement there?

Hey! One first down, but 4 plays for our defense is a good start.

I think McCarthy lost the ball in the sun.

crap field position as usual.

Passing game or run???

Looks like we are using the pass to set up the run.

they had a week to script an opening play and thats what we get?

COME ON JIMMY!

right idea but weak execution.

Jeez, plenty of time by the line.

not the most auspicious of beginnings.

I'm seeing some consistency here...though it's things consistently wrong

WTF was that?????????????????

wow. that was horrendous...do i hear boos?

Not a real sparkling first possession.

Our screens work about 5% of the time.

I swear, Young has a stupid penalty or two every game.

JC can look so good then sooooooo bad.

on the plus side, that was a decent punt. (?)

The whole Sam Young saga is such a headscratcher

I think (hope) the boos were Purdouche fans wanting int'l grounding in the end zone for a quick safety.

crap, I forgot we're back to the All-Bush All-the-time commercials

Hmmmm....who is winning the field position battle.....?

Sam Young reminds me that 'star' ratings mean nothing.

We are going to get an interception soon.

Hope your right Manny.

Who took that snap for PU and why?

That running back in the QB position should be such a give away to the defense. How are we not stopping it for a loss?

I think Florida is about to lose to Ole Miss! Urban Liar and Poodle choke their balls off on the same weekend...a win for us will be gravy!

oh - crAp

Why can we not get off of a WR block to save our lives????

missed tackles.

45 has to make that tackle. Should I know who 45 is?

We need a new coach. NOW!

Last week we got put through the Ringer and now it's going to "oh, Sheet" all day??

Who's that guy talking to????

sorry, to BE "oh Sheet" all day??

lol nice t2.

"What the Sheet - all day

disgusted

I'd much rather have GOLDEN puns.

absolutely disgusted

Does Purdue have a Foulker?

looked like a hold to me

I agree Newb!

no running game again

they recruited AA for speed but he has a lousy 1st step.

holy crap, we utilized the TE on a short down!

Nice Rudolf and Clausen.

How is ND 111th in the nation? Unbelievable.

Nice run that time. Some heart.

Someone pinch me, please. I know I'm dreaming. AA just broke out of a tackle.

we need that every time!

that might have been the best run of AA's career

119th last year. Significant improvement!

well, golden runs a good route but doesn't throw a very good block

Ole Miss wins!!!!!

hahaha Ole Miss blocked the XP to beat Urban!!! I hope all top-5 teams lose.

Florida lost. Poodle & Urpan both took a dive

I wouldn't have parked there.

I guess FL went for it on 4th and 1 and got stuffed, rather than kick a 49 yarder.

I just don't understand how we can't run the ball for more than 1.4 YPC. Something's radically wrong.

where is hughes!

Meyer is not in the same league as Carroll as a coach or recruiter. He's a snake and we dodged a bullet in not geting him.

Maybe Urpan took a hint from CW in last year's Navy game

Paul, LOL!

I dont like Urban Meyer, but he's done pretty well. Certainly better than CW

Meyer may be a snake but I'd rather take half of his wins from this year and last that ALL of ours

Seeing how terrible our kicking game is, I'm going to give Charlie a pass on that Navy call last year.

nice run...1 yd on 2nd down

That's a poor ND team.
Good article in today's Observer. In essence CW is a great guy, as was TW, but can't coach the college game.
I'm believing it as I type.
Yeah 46 has to make that tackle on the Purdue kid.

His wins I'd take, too - but he's an NCAA sanction just waiting to happen.

we had only 3 rush plays the entire 2nd half against MSU??? omg.

Why didn't he dive for the yellow line? Goooo Charlie!

NCAA won't sanction FL, jst like they didn't go after USC after Reg Bush

Oh shit.....this is disgusting

Brutal.

Nice going lads.

I just threw up a little bit in my mouth.

BAD BAD football

CW is an arrogant bastard, not nearly as much a "good guy" as Ty was. I understood the decision to fire Ty to get more wins. I hope CW will not continue to disappoint.

latinas gotta go

No first...

Jury's still out...I think that the NCAA just may hit SC on the Bush thing...maybe only only a slap on the wrist...

this time last week we were in the 2nd quarter...NBC versus ABC...

Weis is arrogant by all accounts, like most coaches are. TW is a POS.

That is a crusher on a number of levels - OL, RB, heart, coaching pre-game, want to....

Can't believe we didn't just sneak that.

How are we even 111th in the nation?

I would love it if i were granted access to post game press conference of charlie's...question 1: you have a big back who breaks tackles. why not give him the ball on fourth and 1?

Nothing will change at ND until we get a REAL college coach. Everyone thought Joe Kuharich would be a godsend with his pro experience. He sucked, then we finally got Ara...then Holtz. Get the picture?

1 freaking yard and they can't get it. Should've done a QB sneak.

Anyone else been screwed by the mute button before?

I'm starting to come around to the Jim/redondo beach point of view. This is truly disgusting.

If we cannot run the ball for one-half yard, we do not deserve to win. PERIOD!!

Is Hughes healthy?

Latina had to go 2 years ago and no one has done a thing.

agree about the coaches. This is CWs fourth year...his players, his system, his assistants, his coaching...his results.

Only $15 mil for the buyout.

No, but glad to see you are, Voice. We want your wit when we watch this crap.

Has a Big Ten officiting crew called a hold since 1985?

Thanks for the kindness Newb. I am at my wit's end.

Fudge, fudgie fudge fudge....
fudge

now our defense sucks, too.

a rare horrible play by briton there

please God..........

I'm almost there, Voice, but sometimes humor is all I have left

Why can't we stop the basic bubble screen after seeing it for four years in a row now? Coaching.

is that the first blitz that's worked this year? or the 2nd?

CW has got to go.

PU on self-destruct.

If George O'Leary's resume had been in order, he would be in his seventh season at ND and the fb program would be in terrific shape.

Say what you want, but the red zone d has been outstanding

That was a good stand by our defense AGAIN...our O owes them so much right now.

Was that ND?

Did our kicker play Benedict Arnold?

Didn't we have a player named Golden something or other??

So...on SECOND and 1 we sneak it, but on FOURTH and 1...not so much?

Jimk, we're playing terrible to set up the Tate.

Michael Floyd! I love this guy!!!!!!!

Nice balance by Floyd. So glad he doesn't go down easily. Of course as long as he holds on to that ball tightly.

Our receivers are running really good routes for the first time in a long time. We're starting to keep 7-8 guys to block for Jimmy to give them enough time, and it seems to work.

yeah Paul....but we've also used Tate on a mid route or two to open it up....he runs good routes not only long ones.

That first quarter took over 45 minutes.
Who's in charge of NBC Sports?
Masaharu Homma?

I was actually just trying to be funny....back to the drawing board for me i guess.

I don't understand why we haven't seen more of Hughes on the running plays. Is he hurt?

oops...ND football kills my sense of humor....

wow. a first down run?

Is this a sustained drive?

Thought that was underthrown out of bounds.

here come the fades to floyd and kamara. throw it to floyd's side, all other things being equal

The sneak seems to be working.

Let us remember that Purdue's defense is TERRIBLE and we should score on every drive.

With that said, I'd be extremely happy with a tying TD here.

finally movin the ball.

please don't throw to Duval.

Please, let's try and score some way other than the fade.

RUN THE FOOTBALL

and no more penalties.

NDPeter- Don't count your chickens...

going in our usual red zone direction.

Well at least it was a rookie this time.

Looks like Sam Young is infecting
Rudolph with the yips.

frosh mistake

Oh! Look! A fade!

Challenge that Charlie. Looks like he was in to me.

did his toe hit before his knee??

hey MAY have been in there ...

his toe hit first.

TOCHDOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No

Noooooo. Not the fade to Kamara!

BTW - Pardon the late comments. I think I'm on a delay listening to WJOB on the internet

I thought it was a bad call on the field, but I don't know if they have enough to overturn.

They cannot overturn that call.

i think it's too close for an overturn. i'd be pretty pissed if they overturned that if it happened to ND.

Hughs was in blocking on that last play.

If they had called it a touchdown, they couldn't have overruled it either.

we may need to run this to the middle of the field so we def get three points

Tate should have caught that ball.

God, can't we throw a SLANT sometime?

they need to cut this kid.

Is that the only route the WR's know?

Speachless.

Unbelievable that we can't hit a chip shot field goal.

drop walker. whitaker for fg's

He must kick lights out during practice, but if he continues to choke, it's no longer relevant.

I prefer a firing squad for the kid.

i mean, our kickers must be such head cases...i bet charlie wants to scream at them but knows that it will only leave them with even less confidence

That's it! I'm out to the garden to weed the tomatoes!

Can the ground just open up and swallow him.

Can we keep Yeatman if we give up Kamara and Walker instead?

very modern of you Voice. In the old church, it was the stake or the rack...

I think I have some socks I need to sort...

"kick" his ass off the team. That is f**king ridiculous

5-7 will be a success for this sh*t squad.

I don't care what Whitaker does, he can't be worse than 9 missed out of last 11. We would've been within striking distance last week if head had split at least one of the kicks.

I don't care if it's 4th and goal from the 30. We should never kick again.

Somebody hold me.

we are lucky to be down lnly 7 - 0

I am so fucking disgusted. Going to wash the car. The Irish really suck.

CW looks like he swallowed a Buick.

We are so laughably bad it is almost surreal.

ND Football - "We Love the # 118!"

It's no longer Willingham's fault

That's an uninspiring football team.

fuck

We couldn't beat Central Michigan

To whomever said it's not
Ty's fault, it's his fault we have a young team. It's not his fault we are playing so poorly.

I dream about ND football all year for this? What's wrong with me?

blanton looks like he cares...that is refreshing

We can ride the "Ty's fault" just so long.

Since we're winning 9 or 10 games, when do we send in Fiesta tix deposits?

I blame it all on Monk Malloy.
What priest has a nickname, "Monk."
Really. I mean you outgrow nicknames when you're in your mid 20's.

Cant agree Bernie74 - as I pointed out above==CW's 4th year

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!

Blanton YES!!!

OMG!

wahoo! blanton!

Heck yea!

Somebody pinch me, I just saw Maurice Crum catch someone from behind

AND THE UNDERCLASSMEN KEEP SCORING

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

NOW THAT IS TASTY!!!

woo hoo!!!!

Just play underclassmen!!

ND might be bad, but remember folks - we're playing Purdue this week.

What happened??????

i heard that blanton has kicked 50 yard field goals just messing around before practice

Ty? My memory ain't what it used to be, but ..how many years ago (or decade) was there a 'Ty' associated with ND football?

TOUCHDOWN !!!!

Fuck the offence, we'll just have to win with the D.

Blanton int TD baby!!

That INT return was the result of a man desperate to score because he doesn't want to give his offensive unit the chance to F* it up.

well to be fair our defense isn't good either. 1 sack in 4 games?

is there some kind of delay here??

Hey, when did Reggie Bush start making commercials?

That's the frosh DB.
Okay.
Screw the offense.
Put in Christ
or Chris
or baby "J"

at least he got that pat through. haha

Did someone call an INT earlier?

That TD, and seeing that scUM has 19 total yards, has convinced to step down from the ledge.

day break

I have to disagree. i have not been disappointed with our defense thus far this year. they still have some work to do, but they have played relatively well this year

We can't kickoff either.

Our defense aint the problem - no sacks (who cares) because they are tiny - and they're on the field 43 minutes a game .... ouch!

I think CW has to go back to the pros.
He's a Pro coach, as Davis, of UNC, is a college coach, or Saban.
Different game.

i agree. at least the D has shown signs of life (and improvement). you can't really say that about the offense, especially the running game.

My new speakers sound awesome!!!!

keep me up to date.
youse guyz are better than hammond and Old whatshisname

They are absolutely hammering Sheets.

indymatt, not funny.

i agree jim. charlie just doesnt seem to get the college game. he took over a program with a bunch of experienced players, but really cant seem to develop any of his own. There isnt a lot of growth going on.

our dbs need to be taught to tackle the wide out once the ball is tipped

A kid wrote in the ND Observer the same thing today.

what's our problem? hmmm...let's see. The greatest collection of running backs in ND history and ...how many yards are they averaging?

Fuck me.

how many freshman are playing??

i think the greatest collection would have to be one of the holtz years collections; rocket and watters and braxton banks, or maybe the one with bettis and brooks...

I am so tired of seeing their receivers just stop and camp out just past the first down line. Of course, some pressure on the QB would help.

Lambert actually looked back to the ball.

idle question...why does Purdue ALWAYS have a good QB? If thereis a worse town in in THAN sb...IT'S wl.

I thought today's game was a lock.
Yesterday was my birthday and all I asked the "Baby J" for was a ND victory + 9 more.
He's (Baby J) treating me like Padre Pio.

I agree with those saying CW can't develop talent, even five-star HS talent, and that he doesn't know how to coach without extraordinary talent. I have said it the past three years. And I'll stick by it until he proves me wrong.

wow...we just can't cover. and just no pressure.

HOld hold

HOLDING

wow, no hold?

Big Ten Conference -- 0 holds since 1985.

No flag for holding????

wow is it just me or holding...on Justin Brown

what did you give baby J for his lat bday?

I'm not convinced of this progress we're allegedly making on defense - a couple of big plays does not a better defense make

Newb; Somewher big Jim from Redondo Beach is laughing his A$$ off.

lol...and is there no such thing as an offense face mask? He just ripped lambert's helmet off.

is there a bigger mismatch in the country than Lambert covering Orton?

I gave "Baby J" $5.00.
I'm from the Biden Family Trust.

hmmm. was notre dame ever held in such low regard nationally under holtz?

Oh no. We suck again.

The referees swallowed their yellow flags on that drive.

Shit

this is despicable. The refs suck, but there is no excuse at this point.

I believe they call that a slant. OC note.

if we were to buy out charlie...who would we go after? Does anyone want this job?

no Andrew they weren't.
but people liked to make fun of his lisp.
And his faux pas; University of Navy. Ruptures.

andrew - nope. Our only shot is if Lou somehow convinces Skip that ND is the best place in the world. I'm not holding my breath.

In all fairness, Herbstreit called the game for Purwill this morning.

Time was when baby J would have been delighted with 5 pre-inflation $$$.

Time was we used to lead Purdue 35-0 at half.

Lambert - 5th yr senior playing soft coverage. play press or get someone who can

But Chris Fowler picked ND!!! If we lose to Pee You, I am giving up on this team.

Our offense blows goats -- it's too prone to mistakes. Otherwise it might be good.

With the respective levels of talent between these two teams, there is no way the game should be even this close. I have to admit, if we lose this game, it'll be the first time I have to start criticizing CW.

The holding and the face mask non-calls...
wow

Missing one is excusable, missing both isn't.

Bernie, where were you last year??? The complete lack of improvement for 10 games was more disheartening than this.

I am losing faith

sam young is still making so many mistakes

Not me. I like to think of myself as a red-shirt sophmore when it comes to criticizing CW

Boy, that was a bullet to Floyd.

Bernie you are a tolerant soul. a credit to ND.

Wow. Lucky there on that pass. He should not have thrown that.

think about it...who would want this job?

Tom Hammond's skull is the size of a small car- it's really remarkable.

wow...dodged a bullet there

"do not let him hold grandma's china?" Thanks, Haden.

Jim Leavitt, HC at University of South Florida, is who I want as our next head coach.

All i needed to know was that IU hung 29 points on MSU today.

What was their recruiting ranking again?

I'm more interested in getting rid of Latina. When was the last time our O line was even decent?

JC is making poor decisions...AGAIN. He needs to figure out how to get his requisite two interceptions in this game.

Last year, I figured that was Charlie's mulligan. This year, it's got to be different.

Why can't we run?! WHY?! I don't understand!!!

I blame this all on Powlus!!!

thank god for michael floyd. he will make our next hc look good.

I have a man crush on Floyd

what the heck did the ref trip over? LOL

That's no rookie catch. WOW.

Please God, no fades.

4 down territory here

I hope we punch this in, because I don't know if Walker can hit one from here. It's waaay too close.

t2 - I think it was the remains of our kicking game.

All we throw are fades....but it works

Newb, LOL!!! Probably!

sweet. let's put the Weis' job status shit on hold. there's a pretty good game going on right now.

Ok, I'll take that one (the fade that is).

We're # 117 Red Zone!!

DayBreakBoys, I am in agreement about Powlus. The program began its slide when Powlus was QB. He's a jinx.

why wouldn't you fade?..it works so well

Another fade!!!!!!!!! This is really poor play calling.

Sweet - Plenty of time for Purdue to jam it right back down and put one in before the half

haha I cannot be stopped! I love Tate

Great....but why the damned fade. TRY A SLANT!!!!

I'll take it because we got 7, but man another fade???

GT TD baby!!

Golden Tate! I Iove ... well - you know.

manny- really now

thats not poor play calling..we scored

one rule in football : you keep doing something until the other team shows they can stop it

Great play calling there. Think every team we play will be all over that now?

none of you are coaches, so shut up, the game is tied. quit acting like purdue is st.mary's of the woods

Clausen does throw a pretty good fade usually, although it would be nice to see another play.

Navy 17, Wake Forest 0.

The streak'll be 2, boys.

Navy is leading Wake 17-0.

hmm. no actually we're probably closer to saint mary's of the woods.

indymatt, they're not; but they exposed an overrated Oregon team and should have lost to Central Michigan. But I agree, we scored; therefore, it was a good play call.

Also, indymatt, that PAT was AWFULLY close...

who cares that it was a freakin fade...it works

if you are gonna criticize the play calling...use something else as an example rather than the things that actually get us TD's..cause after all..this is the point of offense...to score

It's almost impossible to throw a slant when 9 defenders are rushing the passer. Besides having no passing lane and the QB can't see the DB.

the point of the offense is to score? does Haywood know this?

hahahah..touche Schultz...touche

Does anyone else find it ironic that we have such a terrible kicking game that we squib it, and it actually gives teams more trouble and worse field position than if we had a decent kicker?

I'm just glad we didn't have to try a field goal.

Jebus, I like to bitch about this team, but whining about the fact that we score on the same play a lot?

Jimmy Clausen is a smooshy-face!

UM has 23 total yards. i guess things could be worse?

Jimmy has a sensual, pouty, dewy lower lip.

...and this report in from the world of NCAA Football:

Wisconsin 19
Michigan 0

Jimmy looks like a wet emu.

Can we delete that post from Homey - that gives me the willies

wow. we still cant cover.

purdue offense owns us.

Could we actually take over the winningest percentage from Michigan despite this awful team due to a lucky schedule and a radical coaching change at scUM?

The criticism is because the fade is an inherently weak play that reflects poor pass design. It depends solely on the physical skill of the receiver...not on deception, flooding zones, or intricate play design. A good DB can frustrate it most of the time.

and I did coach fball....

we are getting shredded on def.

ill take a wet emu over a skeezy guy who drives black vans with no windows

Think maybe we can get a stop on 3rd this time?

what ever happened to making the qb feel uncomfortable? my understanding was that we were going to dictate to the offense this year.

...halftime...how 'ya Lambert apologists like him now?...

...from pre-game...

....although I see many improvements over 2007 (receivers, safeties, outside linebackers)...I also see non-competitive tailbacks, fullbacks, offensive line run blocking, cornerbacks (especially cornerbacks), defensive line, tight ends and - dare I say it - a quarterback, that while uncannily accurate on the quick slant and "over-the-top" passes, cannot throw the "out", especially the deep out. He also fixes on one receiver, which will exacerbate his interception rate as the year progresses, and is not only slow...but plodding as was his qb coach...

...if we can't run the ball we can't win against a good team...luckily...we don't play many "good" teams in 2008...and we still might not reach 7-wins...
jim/redondo beach | Email | Homepage | 09.27.08 - 2:12 pm | #

unless nd figures out how to stop the purdue offense, we will end up losing this game by double-digits.

Fade part 2:...and if that is your first resort EVERY time...your next 8 opoonents will stuff it.

JimK, very valid comment. But, you don't think we have coaching deficiencies, do you? I mean, didn't you see our improvement in '06 versus '05? Er..hang on a sec..

everyone, shut up on the fade route. Jimmy's just TRYING to make sure he gets to INTs in.

thats still terrible coverage

What an arm Painter's got.

JimK

if anything the fade shows the superior talent of our wide receivers one on one.... from what I can see, that is probably one of our strongest points this year...

so I don't see it as poor play calling....as it plays to our strengths and gets TDs

You don't need to confuse the defense if you can just beat them straight up.

Chuck - i'd agree with you but PU's defense is an absolute joke. it'll probably be a shootout.

Woot. A stop!

I got it....We keep throwing the fade to set up the slant. It's all coming together now.

Good stop.

And Painter has a hell of an arm. I've watched him beat up on the teams I love for the past 9 years. He played for a rival high school in Southern Indiana the four years I was there.

JimK -

I would also like to mention that we have run the fade pretty much every time we get near the endzone this year

Purdue isnt stopping it so why show other plays to the opponents????

painter is going to throw for 400 plus before this is over. thats embarrassing

Do we have a one minute offense?

Painter has a nice arm but he's not even in the same breath as Orton or Brees. those were guys that really carved up ND.

Of course, I also watched Luke Schmidt run all over the team I loved for four years, too. I still don't understand why he doesn't see more time on the field. He used to RUN OVER tackles.

Guess not

Woo hoo, the first half only lasted 95 minutes.

Can we take the tie? Call it on ..account of weather?

And Charlie - you are a packed piece of s - - t!

At least we get the ball to start the 3rd

should've been 21-14. The first one was a TD!

For us to take over the percentage for Michigan they have to not win another game all year and we have to win out

I got to say Alex looks like one of the Golden Girls - she just looks old.

Mike - tough calls throughout the first half. No excuses. This is Purdue, not USC -- oh, wait.

Hey Schultz, I agree that the Purdue defense is really bad, but they have given up only 1 td and we don't have a fg kicker. Unless our defense can keep scoring, I don't see us keeping up with them in the second-half. But, it's all about adjustments. I hope ND can make a few, otherwise, it could be a long second half.

thx IrishGal. Maybe next year?

East Carolina down 11 to Houston. i'm jumping off the Skip Holtz for President bandwagon.

At least, Charlie needs to get rid of Jon Latina. I've seen people on other teams' blogs rip him. We've had a crappy running game since he came to ND.

ButtF, indy and the gang - all valid points, and you're right about a TD being a TD. But that play ain't gonna keep working forever, esp. when we're up against really good DBs, even as good as our guys are. and NewBnd08 - I did LOL!

Have to disagree with you Manny, old or not Alex is a hottie.

Alex would be hotter if she had Jimmy's sensual, pouty, dewy lower lip.

Well...

Its halftime and we are tied with Purdue...

Time to drink.

Re 'the fade' - JimK is right. We should be using it 1 - 1.5 times a game. CW has no mind for college football offense - great recruiter, but a load-o-lard on everything else.

Wonder what it'd take to get ... Herbstreit?

I'm watching the Cubs/Brewers during halftime. I'm a die-hard Cubs fan. And I've certainly died more than lived.

For a long time, ND was the only team I rooted for that won, and had respect. That's why these times are so hard to take.

Herbtreit is a nice and smart guy, but as a head coach?!

And, honestly, who saw Ole Miss hanging 31 on Florida today? Even if they didn't pull it out at the end, that's impressive.

let's see how the media spins this Florida loss...

a) "this just shows how good the SEC is!"
b) "Ole Miss would win 10 games in the Big Ten!"
c) "if Jevan Snead wasn't facing SEC defenses every week, he'd win the Heisman!"

Can anyone clarify the rule involving, after a tipped ball, whether pass interference can be called?

Anon and IrishGal - did you know we had the top all time winning % from the time of ROCKNE until after Holtz retired...even through the Kuharich and Faust eras. We lost it during Davieham.

No one around here seemed to notice that last year Texas passed us in total FB wins - we had always been #2 after Michigan, who had ten years on us.

The mighty have seriously slipped.

Once the ball is tipped, you can hit the potential receiver.

Bernie -

you mean it's a free ball - lyou can push the other guy our of the way, like we just saw?

In past lives, you know that HOF announcer Tom Hammond and USC NC QB, Rhodes Scholar, and all-around class act Pat Haden were bad.

I mean m----- f------ bad! We're talking raping nuns, killing popes, etc.

Even with that, hopefully they're getting a few mill a game to cover this c--p.

I love the Mets tanking 2 years in a row. Can somebody explain why the Brewers fired their Manager?

by the way, I am tired of playing Purdue. This would be the first opponent I'd drop ..

Lilly is no-hitting the Brewers through 4 and the Mets already won. as long as they can throw Johan for 9 innings in every playoff game, they'll have a shot at the pennant.

Quinn will play! Quinn will play!

It's not all Latina's fault. He's never played a down at ND. He doesn't block.

Knoxville Domer, yeah, once it's tipped, you can push people out of the way to get to the ball. About the only thing you can't do is grab the facemask, and all the personal foul stuff.

As for the Brewers firing Ned Yost, he was despised by their fan base, and widely thought to be an ineffective manager. They did fired him with 12 games left in the season, when the Brewers were tanking, hoping to ignite the team. The Brewers have pretty much thrown in everything in this season, since their two ace pitchers are almost certainly gone after this season, and they figure give it a shot while they can.

Newb - I doubt Herbstreit knows much about coaching; with that, I'd gamble on him just for being a lock on sideline improvement.

JimK - is that true re all-time wins (Texas)? You're right about "how the mighty.." Never thought I'd have to agree that we are .. just about ..irrelevant.
Sad (Ara Father, where have you gone !?!)

Texas has not passed us yet in all time wins - they are 3 games behind

And in percentage they are so far back, somewhere around 30pts back

Notre Dame has been irrelevant for quite some time. All of ours glorious stats and records have fallen apart in 15 short years.

We need the black athlete!

even if we win this game, our lack of a running game and the embarrassment that is our kicking game doesnt give me hope for the future

IrishGal DC - even so, 3 games??? Wow - we used to be light years ahead.

Does anyone know if CW is pulling any salary, or what he took last year?

as a side note about Texas, one of my favorite ND games ever was their trip to Austin in '96. Denson ran in the game-tying touchdown and did the Hook 'Em Horns, then Sanson (i think) made the game-winner. it's too bad he cost us the SC game in the Holtz finale.

I can't remember the last time we had a good kicker. Reggie Ho?

Jimmy Clausen: fight. fight. fight. *deadpan* (Not even a single exclamation point!!)

Don't quit your day job, kid.

Since someone wants to bring in Herstreit as the HC why don't we just bring in Mark May to coach the OL? I mean hey he won an Outland trophy didn't he?

PLEASE NOT!!!!

hmmm. who kicked the game winner in texas about twelve years ago

when was our last kick return for a touchdown?

andrew - about one minute in the future.

Sorry Irishgal...that was a claim made last year by Texas...they may be counting early games against high schools, which we also played but do not count in our win total. Still as noted...only 3 games? How long do you think it's gonna take them to pass us?

i feel like the last kick return for a TD came from Vontez Duff. is that right?

ok, maybe not.

I think Joe Tiller hates Notre Dame. As the end of the first ND/Purdue game, he was about ready to spit in Weis' face.

Vontez Duff....nice name from teh near past. Would kill to have him and Walton back.

Welcome back David.

Bernie, nearly everyone at Purdue hates Notre Dame. It's OK, though. As a native Hoosier, I hate everything about Purdue.

Zibby's were all punts i think. i cant remember anyone else taking a kick back recently.

Yikes!

"It'll come down to the kicking game"
-- Purdue HC Joe Tiller, who appears Rockne-like versus his opposing head coach

nice run from AA

I loved Walton.

And Grimes might not be the best receiver but he has amazing hands.

And DAMN. Is it me or EVERYTIME Tate touches the ball does he have a little electricity and can score anytime he touches the ball.

Ditto anan...BTW...was than an OL PUSH?

I gotta be careful. My sister went to Purdue.

I think it bugs her that our whole family (no one else went to either school) roots for ND over Purdue.

JimK please be serious....

All you AA haters must hate that.

i loved that whole team. one of the best ND defenses of my lifetime: Earl, Walton, Sapp, Duff, Watson, Tuck. they scored a touchdown in like every game in '02.

TOUCHDOWN !!!!

HOLY HELL!

that was fun

how bout them apples?

To whoever replaced our OL at halftime - thank you.

why is our tailback seven yards off the line?

Must've been a flashback - I had this image of Notre Dame running in for a score!

Schultz I was in Europe for most of that season. I remember seeing the online reports and being shocked that Walton and Duff scored more points than the offense. Shane Walton will always be my favorite ND DB.

that was a "suck on these nuts" kind of drive

That was almost to easy :)

It's because my wife just walked into the room and sat down. She did that against SDSU at the start of the 4th quarter and we know how that went. She watched the whole Michigan game with me. She missed most of the MSU game.

I just told her she's stuck here the rest of the season.

Good block by Rudolph.

Don't let her move Bernie.

Bernie...invest in restraints. Hell, I'll buy them. So long as they are used ONLY for the game.

"Wha wha whaaaat?"

-Sheila Broflovsk

Knoxville, let's hold your Mark May for OL coach in abeyance (till the 4th qtr). We're all with you, though!

Daybreakboys: You take the fun out of restraints!

attaboy blanton!

DayBreak - you can see why everyone (including me) was seduced by Ty's early success. nobody ever talks about him inheriting a Davie defense that almost all went on to NFL careers.

Our damn blitz's never work. I've never seen one work.

Daybreak - you just saw one work

And here I thought they were going to call "holding." You remember that penalty, from days of old.

nice pass -

Painter's mental lapses are mystifying.

Daybreak - you just saw 2 work - CB is doing an amazing job

What is this holding you speak of?

Bill:

My memory of it is quite dim, but I think it involves gripping an opposing defensive lineman in a blatantly obvious way.

I want 7 points. I want 7 points. Come on everybody say it with me.

With a DL that is smaller than ... Navy's!! ('Oh, my! -- Dick Enberg) it's hard to believe we don't give up 50 points every week.

With Blanton starting instead of Terraible Lambert last week, we may just have won that MSU game.

I just want a blitz to actually HIT the QB. I should have qualified my statement.

I want some sacks.

I want 7 points. I want 7 points. I want 7 points. I want to put Purdue away. I want to blow West Lafayette off the Indiana map. I want to disembowel Curtis Painter...oh, sorry. I want 7 points.

I was just wondering what the rest of the posters on this site think of themselves.

Do you consider yourself more of a "Thriller" or a "Destroyer?"

As for me, I'm a thriller with destructive tendencies.

are you kidding me? is this the same Armando?

What is all this running?!?!

who is that wearing armando's number?

Hughes who? Go Allen!!!!

Who is #5?

It seems that someone found something that is working today and is sticking with it. Good coaching, for a change.

Clausen just matured right before our eyes.

That looks a LOT like the Colts

nd is starting to get it!!

Is that a "hole" I see made by our "o" line?

if we win this game, we will have won 5 of our last 6. After last year, I would take that as a significant improvement. Especially since our schedule doesn't get much tougher this year.

AA' got ... confidence. He thinks he's running behind an OL as good as he had in HS (South Florida).

Jimmy...come on now.

we got ourselves a running game today

Allen...take a breather....don't get hurt

AA is feeling it all of a sudden. Good for him. And good for our OL! I still don't know who switched them out at halftime, but I REALLY owe you.

Did Charlie throw some garbage cans around at halftime???

Guys....I'm not saying anything...But Golden Tate has a big ass. I could set my drink on top of it as he walks by

I'm wondering -- anyone think the newfound holes in our O-line are a by-product of that super collider in Europe?

see what happens when the line blocks? it's not that AA sucked, it's just that the line was pathetic.

Memo to Brock Spack:

Notre Dame is not, and never will be, like Purdue.

"Sh*tty spot too!"

Kick a FG....oh, wait.

Did someone just say we should hire Mark May? Did I read that right?

sneak please.

"It never fails when we have a Big Ten crew."

hello all.

improvement every week, nice to see.

1st down

Keep CW's face off the damn screen!

Seriously, we should have kicked a FG there. Period. If we had ANYTHING like a kicker, we'd be up two scores.

Homey - is that what Charlie said?

do you think Clausen talked to BQ about the sneak?

TOUCHDOWN!!!!

Yeeaaaaaaaaah

wow!

TOUCHDOWN IRISH

omg...it wasn't a Fade! It was an AWESOME TD!!!

Screw Yeatman!

Where was the fade there?

did Charlie actually make some halftime adjustments?

Seriously - what ishappening ere with the OL? I don't want to say it too loud, but ...

What was the line on this game?

maybe they are finally tired of playing like crap

wow - those last seven plays were great -

The line on the game was ND favored by one.

happening ere (Freudian bra) --- "happening here" -- either way, this seems like 'Brave New World' with a OL!

i think ND was favored by 5. but the last time i saw the line was Wednesday.

fuck and yes. this is so much better than bitching. AA looked pretty gased on his last big run.

This is reminding me what it felt like when Weis first got here, except now with good defense and all young players instead of old. Oh, and less sacks.

Do Kyle Rudolph and Ethan Johnson both wear number 9? Can't we afford an extra jersey?

come on turnover....

Bruton had six right there. if there was one thing that jim from renaldo beach has ever been dead-on about it's that Painter locks onto his receivers.

PLayers can wear the same number so long as they are on different sides of the ball

wow...

what a grat pass - damn

perfect play

td pu

shite

Well...we were playing short the whole time. We deserved that

Reminded me of the USC game, 4th and nine.

Bad memory.

Bill,

My call for MM as an OL coach is definitely "tounge in cheek".

Holy Buzz Kill.

that's six -

painter. still on target for four hundred plus.

andrew - he can throw for 600 if he wants as long as ND wins. only Texas Tech fans give a crap about yardage.

That was a correct call. But the refs have really sucked it out today. Not a single holding call on Purdue.

They are like a 'Little ND' when it comes to great qb's!

Our DBs got greedy

Schultz, yes, as clear as a bell I heard Charlie say, "It never fails when we have a Big Ten crew."

AA is FEELIN' it! I thought we might get our first one back for a TD there...

CRAP!

Olsen got pwned right there.

Rudolph!

rudolph ... waiting for bad pun/joke from announcers.

im liking this Clausen/Rudolph thing.

I like Rudolph. He's gonna be a freak.

Rudolph is having a coming out party. That's big given the Yeatman situation. It's a big day to be stepping up for young Kyle.

Wow, they gave us a good spot. I'm shocked.

should that count as a fade?

did you guys know that Torri Williams (covering Tate on that last play) got arrested for stealing condoms?

I want 7 points, I want 7 points. Worked last time.

I want 7 points. I want 7 points. I want Torri Williams to spontaneously combust. I want 7 points.

wow Turk, early enough?

what a great, smart play bt Floyd ...

Love how NBC ignores what's happening on the field for a report from Alex.

The PU DL is jumpy all of a sudden.

nice catch Duval.

Oh come ON Kamara! You can only catch it if its 5 feet over your head?

Boy, Kumara just can't make a play.

Duval kamara and jimmy clausen don't have the chemistry

Go for it

they can't kick from here...can they?

4th and 7...shades of Navy...noooooooooooo!

News Flash: "After being held hostage for the better part of 2 years, the Notre Dame football team was released under a clear blue September sky.."

DAVID GRIMES ON 4th AND 7!!!!

HOLY CRAPPPP !!!!

BOOYAAAAH

oh look what i found...

make that yessssssssss!

how classy that - handing the ball to the ref...

the real question is, how bad is this Purdue defense?

Great TD, but still pretty embarassing that we have to go for it on 4 and 7.

To quote Barry Switzer: "Let's go out there and hang a half a hundred on 'em!"

Yeah, I want to see the Irish hit 50+ points.

Schultz ------- shhhhhhh!

I'm not worried about how bad the Purdue defense is. Last year, they would have looked like the '85 Bears against us. I'm just happy to see the offense move the ball.

Thank God I have ADT. My dog is too stupid to run away from a fire.

Paul & everyone who is dissing this -- I don't care. Yes, Purdue is bad. Yes, we should not be stuck on 4th and 7. But it doesn't matter if you actually EXECUTE for a change.

Harrison Smith is always around the ball -

I thought these guys were good at kick returns.

that was embarrassing

Second that one KDomer78!!

ouch. For the ref.

Oh, Sheets. This is not good.

Our offense is clicking and now our D is gone???

i wasn't trying to dis ND. but let's face it, this Purdue defense (besides SDSU in the opener) might be the worst unit ND faces until Cuse.

Newb, They don't score, you'd be singing a different tune.

Came back from Mass and "Baby J" said go and sin no more.
Go Irish.
Me of little faith.

Orton reminds me of Stovall. i don't know why Purdue doesn't run that quick out to him and let the kid make a play. that was BQ's bread and butter in '05.

Stanford game next week is at 2:30 EST.

and we have a game going ...we've improved a ton -

I need the MSU players to tell me it's the 4th....this game is to confusing for me.

let's just make sure the same ND players from the 3rd quarter play in the 4th!

The third quarter was only 42 minutes.
This game might come in under 4 hours.

lol Paul. You can't see me, but I'm holding up four fingers for you right now, because I just learned how to count that high in calculus.

End of 3rd Q, I switch over to CBS for The Auburn/TN game, TN punts into the end zone, change of possession and CBS does NOT go to commercial!!! First play afterwards, Auburn rights right and the SEC officials call holding.

My what a difference from NBC and the Big Ten officials!!

Newb - I didn't know those guys took calculus

Sorry, you're right. I meant Finite Math 101.

what the hell does Hacey mean?

That was a game-winning stop. This team is suddenly heartening.

NIIIIIIIICCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

Calculus at ND was my very first class freshman year. Man, what a disaster.

It's "Hayseed"

we need to have a separate session about how terrible the NBC deal is

oh wait -my man Harrison Smith!!

nice defense

great defensive series down there -

Do it Harrison!!

What? No Flag?

WOW!

CRAP. Thats looks very much like Tom Brady

um, that's a catch?

What!?!? Damn! Nevermind. Oh wait...review.. gotta count. His head was down!

Thats a catch!

Ground can't cause a fumble. That should be overruled.

im glad my Autury Denson jersey is now a Golden Tate jersey.

We won a review?????

Even the refs can't stop him.

yaa hoo!

NDPeter, LOL!

I think we are witnessing the clash of titans
- Big Ten officiating crew vs Big East Replay Officials

I think Clausen is gimping it a bit.

Time to Pound it.

why have we not done THAT all year???

i feel good for Aldridge. that kid has been through a lot.

Now that was a beautiful run

112 yds this half!?!? typo?

holy shit, Michigan up 1?

WHAT?!?! scUM 20, Wisc 19?!?

see what happens when UM doesn't "give away" victories? (kidding)

hey, can anyone tell me, is the first down line being sponsored by Xerox?
/sarc off

Gotta kick the field goal. Give him some confidence.

Jimmah's trying to get his 2 INTs in by throwing to Kamara in the end zone.

Good D for a change!!

he'll miss

switched walker out at half too!

hallelujah.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

Good for him. A little confidence. Nice kick, kid!!

Good kick kid.

Well I'll be damned....

He still sucks

BW is getting a lot of love from the rest of the kicking team. that's good to see, and it's great for him. I hope that kick turns his confidence around.

He screwed up my prediction. I said ND would win 35-28.

I'll live with the disappointment.

He showed he can do it. Now he's got to do it when there's pressure on.

he's a young man trying hard - I'm glad for him and his parents - and for us!

Perdiction.....He doesn't miss a kick all year. I must be a little drunk.

UM scores TD. I hope Walker turns it around, he's got a strong let and could be a weapon.

I feel for the kicker. He's trying, it's not like there's anyone else that can go in for him, and they keep putting him in there. I can't ever "hate on" a kicker unless he's a pro who is not doing his JOB.

3 possession game now with that FG. Good kick there kid and may you have many more!

This is the worst TV i have ever seen.

oh man Joe Tiller will be bigger than CW at that rate.

Let's hope the D doesn't have a letdown.

Running it? Do they know there 3 scores down.

one more stop.

ok, that picture juxtaposition was hilarious!!!

yay.

Another huge stop. This is how you put games away!!

Now, let's run it down their throat.

Harry Smith is always around the ball!

It's nice to see that if we give them some rest, our D can ice a game away for us.

When did Reggie Bush start making commercials? I kill me.

OK everyone, I'm out. Great game for the Irish today! Let's not underestimate the Trees next week...but overall, this is a HUGE improvement over last season. Still not great, but better.

later Newb!

I'm just glad we won a trophy back

a thumbs-up to Charlie for a nice gameplan today? anyone? anyone?

What did Kuntz do?

WILL win a trophy back!

* knock on wood

Flipped over to the Michigan game...500th game in that stadium according to the field art.

Anyone know the number of games played at ND Stadium?

Yeah, game's not over yet (says Heidi).

if ND holds on, i officially get the right to kick any PU fan that brings up 3-9 to me in the balls.

does every Purdue coach have a mustache?

PU must stand for Porno University.

Answered my own question...361 games (or around there) according to und.com. The google is my friend.

Just out of curiosity...I keep seeing Montana's kid on the sidelines in tv shots, but I never (that I know of) see Crist. ??

Fowler picked ND. Screw Herbie, Howard and Corso!

Crist is a 3rd stringer, Nate is the son of a Legend.

And Crist is a guaranteed red shirt this year.

I wish we would have attacked more. We shouldn't be slacking off.

Look, Jimmy Clausen has death rays coming out of his eyes.

if there's one staple of the Tiller era at Purdue, it's the window-dressing touchdown when the game is over.

Nate look's just like Joe did - by the way, he was a better at basketball than football -

Hayseed?

Stop them on 4th down and maybe we can run in a ceremonial touchdown? Sort of give Tiller a going away present?

Harrison is everywhere. Unlike the fans on this site today. Where is everybody?

Holy crap! UW scores TD

Wisky just scored and need a 2 pt. conversion to tie with 13 seconds left. FYI.

my man 'Hayseed" he's a great kid, really smart, and from a teriific family -

Harrison Smith always kinda reminds of the guy who played the Scarecrow in Batman Begins.

Am I a jerk for wanting to ram another one in?

I'm pissed we're not gonna get to 50 pts.

anyone know the over/under?

This is a good solid win for a young team. Sure didn't look that way early. Blanton's interception may rank up there with Bruton's fumble recovery vs. SDSU as a crucial play for the season.

The Big Ten network has UM-Wisconsin soccer.
Friggin rip-off.

Why hasn't Clausen been pulled out yet?

o/u was 48.

Hope you took the over.

Clausen's not out because they want him to practice the kneel-down.

I agree - Sharpley should be in -

I actually don't bet ;-), but I find it incredibly interesting mathematically ('cuz I'm a geek)

no more Joe in South Bend. sad. ill miss kicking their ass at the Stadium.

good times

3:26 is the quickest NBC game in recent memory.

I'm out of here. My first game on the blog. Enjoyed sharing it with you guys.

Go Irish!!

Get those restraints Bernie!

See ya next week boys. Great game.

I think we came up 1 yard short of rushing for 200 today. Too bad.

They're on order!!

see y'all next week! Voice, speak up! LOL

'night guys - isn't it great to beat Purdue again?

Just a few comments:
NewbND08 - I haven't seen a bigger flip-flop in someone's comments since Obama's stance on governmental spending!
Voice - how about trying to be original in blaming the early-game troubles on someone other than Powlus. I know he didn't end up being the 2-3 time Heisman winner that he was predicted to be, but the struggles of last season, last game, and this first half were not his fault.
IndyMatt - I totally agree with what you say
Jim from Redundant - why the hell did you re-surface? Many if not all of us were hoping you got devoured by a great-white and therefore we wouldn't have to suffer through your ignorant entries for another season!
Fade - what works...works! Don't knock something if it is working in a game that you win!
Paul - how about we keep this about football, huh?
DayBreak - WFT? Did you take your medication this morning?

In summary, gentlemen (and ladies, possibly), keep your whining negative comments to yourself and keep the big picture in mind. As someone who sat through 4 years of Davie misery and then suffered through the Willingham era, I must still say that a win is a win is a win! Don't get so down on your team early on, especially if they are tied with a team that just gave a nationally ranked team a run for their money. And, let's face it, that's a good sign for our program if we actually LOOK like a decent football team!!

My Dearest Denver Irish -

I offer this not as a criticism, but as a critique.
Some of your comments (e.g. "Did you take your medication this morning?") may be categorized as whining and/or negative.

Yours Eternally in Jesus Christ,Our Lord and Savior,
Homeydogg

My dearest Homey,
I offer this not as a criticism, but as a critique. If you had read actually read DayBreak's comments, then you would not think that my comments were whining or negative. There is a distinct difference.

Yours Eternally in Our Lady,
Denver Irish

What a great win!
I loves ya Charlie.
It wasn't me talkin' it was me being influenced by Voice, Daybreak, Knoxville, Bernie P and of course Jim from Redondo Beach.
Way to run the ball in the 2nd half. Let's hope AA is starting to bloom.
Tate is awesomeo.
Rudolph is a comin.
I love Harrison Smift and all the Smift Boyz.
I love Bruton and McCarthy.
Ainello(sp).
See ya next week boyz.
The tress.
Stanford bringing their band?
Let's go up and whip their asses.

Good win fellas

Denver,
My running gag about Powlus is just that. Don't show up here and tell me how to think and what I may or may not post about this football team. Alienating half the board is not the smartest thing to do. I give less than a shit what you think. Now shape up or ship out.

Wow a very good performance by the boys today. Still some coaching points and still a lot of bitching on this board. Guys those are true freshmen out there making plays. True freshmen, what a group of athletes Weis has recruited and all most of you can do is piss and moan. Why dont you sit back and enjoy the best we have looked in two years. I for one am extremely pleased and that light has reappeared. This, not Michigan, is a game that we can grow on.

Powlus is a bad luck charm. There's no doubt about it.

Voice,
A gag is a gag if people actually laugh at it. I'm not telling you how to think, just maybe how to think before speaking or typing! I have not alienated half the board, as the majority of posters I have addressed have not been present in the blog in recent years, or are Jim from Redundant. I feel really broken up inside if you don't think anyone cares what I have to say, but anyone would point out the fact that you are taking this just a tad bit too seriously! As for shaping up or shipping out, what do you intend to do? Try posting some intelligent and/or funny remarks!

AMEN! And thank Jesus Herbert Christ we came through with that one. Just one question...why does Kamara even see the field anymore? He was off AGAIN today.

...nice running...nice win...

can someone post the safety message

My Dearest Denver:

I defer to your judgment, for you must be more pious than I (everyone is more pious than I).

As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever:

Homeydogg

What, no response, Voice? Trying to McGuyver some retaliation at me? Do you think that just because I haven't been posting that long, that I don't belong to your elite brotherhood of chosen-ones? I am a TRUE Irish fan, and I have stuck by our team for the past two decades of intermittent misery. Making jokes about the play of our quarterback early in the game in relation to a former quarterback who just happens to be his coach, and then not commenting when said quarterback wins the game, is not simply lame, it's....sinful!

Voice--I wasn't on for most of the game, but I thought it was funny.

Even my UW grad, Ty apologist, sister (who LOVED to rip on the rest of us after last season) had this to say--"wait, all these guys are frosh and sophs? That's a great sign for you..."

Gotta side against the Voice on this one, I'm sick of all the negativity and defeatism. Lets leave the moaning and groaning at least until we lose the game. But we didn't, we won! 3-1! WOOOOOOOO! The OL finally got that shipment of NASTY that they've been lacking. I just hope they don't run out.

Denver stoking the fire like a bat out of hell, yowza. I got your back Voice...

Salud,

The Ant

The criticism was laid at the feet of the ND team and Coach Weis as ND struggled once again coming out of the shute.
Denver, the Voice knows his football and has a great sense of humor. Don't take offense at what wee say. You will surely be able to read the vitriol in the posts, if you recall last year.
Voice's critical review is always towards the lack of progress with the ND OL for the CW years. I agree with him on that.
Be like Paul Newman and Masty.
Be cool.

i am very happy that we made such a good showing today. i had already sensed the program had been heading in the right direction. jimmy golden was expeshully awesome today...

Holy Crapola;
Somebody's beating North Texas 70-20.
Could it be Rice?
Nah, can't be Rice.
They're good in Baseball, but they blow in football.
Could it be Rice!

The third quarter may have been as good a quarter as we have seen ND play in a long time. This is only one game but the naysayers may be feeling a bit uncomfortable tonight.

I'm glad I'm only checking comments after the games this year. Otherwise I'd have sounded as negative as you guys. I was certainly thinking to myself "oh no...here we go again...we really ARE that bad..." until we tied it up at 14.

Let's face it--the team is young and schizophrenic. We went from "wow, we really are CRAPPY" to "holy heavens, we just kicked ass by 17!" I get the feeling we're in for many more swings this year, most of them positive. We're not good--but how, after watching this, can anyone say we're not better than last year? We've got young playmakers. As I said earlier this week, last year wasn't a rebuilding year, it was a razing. This year is the rebuilding-our young playmakers didn't even have a chance to make mistakes to learn from last year. This year, they are making mistakes, but they're learning as well, and getting better. The pendulum IS swinging up. If it weren't we'd have laid down and lost by 30. We won by 17. Lots to improve, but we WON, and it really wasn't close at the end. Defense made plays, offense made plays, and special teams (Walker aside, though I'm proud of him for making the 2nd fg) made plays on coverage/returns.

Observations:

Clausen is downright SCARY accurate when he has time and makes a good decision. That pass to Grimes couldn't have been any better.

Armando Allen CAN run...who knew? He was just missing blocking. That first series of the 3rd quarter, we actually looked like a football team. Awesome.

Blanton was my pick for impact freshman. Yes, Floyd's going to get a lot of catches and yards, and probably td's, but Blanton's swagger and that int turned this game around. No one will remember this at the end of the season, but that could be the play of the year to get the momentum rolling.

Ethan Johnson is a monster--while I'd love to see some sacks, of course, it's ludicrous to say the pressure isn't there. Someone commented on Painter's bad decision making--chalk that up to only having 1.1 seconds to throw the ball. Remember, the D is young too--as they get better, those blitzes will get home. Right now, they're doing a good job of getting pressure and disrupting the offense. We'll lose out on a few big plays, like that 55 yard TD, but we can live with that.

Offensive Line--memo: remember what you did in the 3rd quarter and do that again, all the time.

We're not going to blow anyone out, but we should be able to hang with everyone remaining on our schedule besides USC (would love for them to overlook us and pull an Ore St, but that won't happen)

That was a great 3rd qtr. Lush.
Rice has 77-20 lead over N. Texas.
Alabama up 17-0 on Ga.

Remember the guy from South Bend who coached at Wasu. Wahington State.
A good coach, they fired him, and his replacement if as inept as Tyrone.

there is nothing to be unhappy about. we are 3-1. look at how tough the wolverines played wispride & we demolished them. the spartans took apart the hoosiers. we are good & we have nothing to be ashamed about. now let's head out to the linebacker lounge & hoist a few!

Thanks, Jim M., I truly appreciate the honest comments of someone viewing a situation from the perimeter. The main point in my original post, if someone would have asked me to expand, would be that we have enough to worry about while watching our team and that negativity (even the kind that some long-time friends view as funny but most Irish fans view as annoying) only serves to punish us in good times or in bad!

Lighten up, Denver. As someone who misses more games than I’d like to these days due to family obligations, I always enjoy reading these comments over Sunday morning coffee. They give me a better sense of the game's emotion than anything else in print or online. On days like today when I am fortunate enough to watch, this forum -- with its high posts and low posts, its wailing and gnashing of teeth, its all caps cheers -- is the closest thing to hanging out with the guys and hooting/hollering at the TV that I can find. While the Powlus gag may not be his *most* amusing line, Voice, in particular, has posted some damn fine shit here. So how about dropping the holier-than-thou routine?

i've never heard of denver irish before today. is he new to this site?

Denver is lucky...he only suffered through 4 years of Davie. I suffered through the entire 5.

I have bashed AA repeatedly. I love when the Irish prove me wrong and make me look clueless. He played a hell of a game.

I love to be both pessimistic and optimistic. Once again, the defense gave up a TON of yards. The tackling by our cornerbacks was not good today and their YAC was way too high. Our running game was better, but let's remember Purdue's running defense has been BAD.
On the other hand, I'm going to have to disagree with the other posters who are ripping on Jimmy. He is playing EXTREMELY well. He had a few bad throws but overall had been very accurate. The fade is a great weapon for us, we just need to make sure it doesn't become our only one. I think the Grimes and Rudolph TDs prove we are using it to open up 1 on 1 coverage with the slot receiver and/or TEs against the safeties in the middle. This is a matchup I'd like to see every time. Allen's vision looked much better today, he was seeing the cutback lanes like he hasn't at all before.
I agree with someone's comments earlier that this wasn't a gimme like SDSU and wasn't "given" to us like Michigan (sucks), it was a well-played win that reminded me of the Holtz era when we could put other teams away. What a welcome sight!

DAMN! What a change to read positive posts. I hope the naysayers find a cave they can hide in together.

The Irish looked very good.

Nate, your post says it all. Thanks.

Denver Irish:

It's one thing to disagree with one's pessimistic comments. That's an argument.

It's another thing to tell a pessimist to stop expressing his opinion. That's being an asshole.

We like arguments here.

That said, I am in favor of looking on the bright side. I'm pleased with the year so far.

Four games. How many sacks allowed?

AS,
I never told Voice to stop expressing his opinion. I simply asked him(her) to think for a second before implying that momentary imperfections in the performance of our starting quarterback were in some way an indication of the kind of coaching he is receiving from someone considered a "failure" by certain alumni. By expressing my displeasure with Voice using this tactic, that does not make me something that deserves naughty language over the internet. Thanks, AS, for injecting your acumen into this dialogue that doesn't concern you! And try to clean your mouth with some Lifeboy! GO IRISH!

I prefer a firing squad for the kid.
Voice in the Wilderness | Email | Homepage | 09.27.08 - 4:39 pm | #

Total lack of class.

ND fans do not say such things about a college kid on their own team.

Classless.

What's up with the Hayseed lovefest? He got beat BADLY on the TD. Seems to gamble a lot, too much for my taste. He made some good plays, but several bad plays. I can see why Sergio got more early playing time.

Kumara - I thought you were having a bad game, but this is an official sophomore slump. Shape up buddy.

Jimmy looked in command of the offense in the second half. Hopefully the training wheels are off!

Tate and Floyd - what a tandem. Nice play by the OL in the second half as well.

More bend-but-do-not-break by the D. A few scary moments, but they're playing decent ball. Blaton's Int was saa-weeet. Burton shoulda had another, and this game would have been a blowout much earlier.

"In summary, gentlemen (and ladies, possibly), keep your whining negative comments to yourself and keep the big picture in mind."

No further comments.

And sorry. You're being a doodyhead. I didn't realize that my "naughty words" would be so poorly received.

Some of you are so dramatic on here.. wow relax.. it is a young college football team who is basically still rebuilding.. settle down people

Team was great today.. D made some plays and the O was running on all cylinders.. great game and why so much complaining... Still lots of time to determine what Charlie's capabilities are

If we finish 9-3 or 8-4 what is the big deal? He has a team full of young talent and the recruiting has been fine. If we finish 8-4 or 9-3, it can only go up from here... Give it some time.. anyone bitter over last year, needs to check themselves and realize how many freshmen played on both sides of the ball and who we lost in 06... Man it saddens me to read people complaining week in and week out.. just be happy this young team is 3-1 and realize we can only go up from here people.. Clausen, Rudolph, Allen, Flyod, Tate, come on now

To the naysayers who long for thew "glory" days. How many players did Ara, Devine or Lou have on scholarship? How many times did Ara, Devine and Lou go undefeated? At what time during his 11 years did Ara not have extraordinary talent? Keep things in perspective.

AS, grow up!

T-Mac, amen brother!

GO IRISH!

Kyle McArthy went a long way toward saving the whole damn game when it was 7-0 and he caught that guy from behind, and Purdue ended up blowing the field goal and came away with nothing.

To say nothing of his punishing tackles all day.
I loved Zbikowski, who didn't? But I think McArthy might actually be a better tackler than Zibby. He doesn't run back punts, but man can he tackle.

Jimmy Clausen was looking at the whole field today. Huge improvement over last week.

The start was shaky, and getting stopped on 4th and short was stomach turning, but congratulations to the whole team for persevering and winning.

I think it's fair to say that all we ask is that they fight hard, win at least eighty per cent of their games, and always, always beat the Boilermakers. Mission accomplished!

And yeah, the whole Purdue coaching staff cult of personality Tiller mustache thing REALLY creeped me out. What kind of a program are they running over there?

You're right. I was gonna point out your juvenility in singling out my Big Bad Curse Word, but then I realized the irony of my juvenility in bickering over stupid things on the internet.

The game was good, it was fun, and let's all agree to be a little bit nicer in the future. Maybe we'll make in this world after all.
:)

Where are the posts tonight clamoring for Skip Holtz to replace CW??

Uh did anyone else notice that the whole Prudue coaching staff had the same mustaches? I really thought either Joe tiller was getting younger or something. That weirded me out too.

AS,
You obviously were drinking more than the rest of us. "Singling" you out for calling me an a-hole was a sign of your "juvenility," not any indication of my character flaws. I can get my point across on the internet, and especially to an audience designed to be "pro-Notre Dame," without resorting to childish tactics like using profanity. Once again, grow up, learn how to support your Irish properly, and good day sir (or madam)!

This "holier than thou" bullshit (gasp!) is what gives normal Notre Dame fans a bad reputation.

Of course Ara, Lou, and Devine had consistent winning seasons and never lost 9 games in one season at Notre Dame, no matter the number of scholarships or experience level
. And they've all won National Championships early in their careers at Notre Dame.

AS,
There is nothing "holier than thou" involved. It is simply a matter of making your point without having to resort to childish tactics or signs of "juvenility" like using profane language in a public setting. Learn from your fellow ND fans. If you are a "normal" ND fan, then you must know that "normal" ND fans are for the most part pretty religious, and don't need to cuss to get their point across. And if that makes US have a bad reputation, then that is simply your opinion, and not the view of the majority of fans on this site.

I really think the negative comments are completely silly. If falling behind 7-0 means Charlie should be fired, then winning by 17 should logically mean he should get a contract extension. Right? Let's try to get a grip.

That said, Denver Irish: STFU or GTFO. Keep your whining negative comments to yourself. You don't win many friends by calling people medically unbalanced, and while many of us may think that Jim from Redondo Beach could probably be a little less verbose, wishing for him to get eaten by a shark is a little over the top.

Note: if you respond that you didn't come to make friends, that almost by definition makes you an internet troll, and thus my original statement stands.

Now, to everyone else: if you're in the Bend and can't get tickets, a friend of mine just bought and remodeled Tailgaters on Ironwood Road. Soon it will be called "Mitch's Corner" and have a full menu, but until then it's still a pretty good place to drink a brew and watch the game.

Sorry. Make that STHU or GTHO.

There's nothing juvenile or childish about swearing, IMO. Don't impose your morals on me. Assuming your morals are superior to mine is basically a "holier than thou" attitude.

And clearly we know separate ND fans. The ones I know won't list "religious" in the top 5 characteristics to describe themselves. I'm not doubting that you know religious ND fans, but to appoint them the standard is unfair.

Mike,
I whole-heartedly agree with your first statement. In regards to your second statement, thank you for proving my point oh-so-tactfully! By thinking that I am "whining, negative," with my comments, you truly are showing your immaturity in regards to this issue.

AS,
You continue to impress yourself! "There's nothing juvenile or childish about swearing"? What a profound statement! I'm not imposing any morals, simply trying to continue keeping this blog relatively clean and focused on football, and you have ruined this effort. If you honestly think that the "standard" ND fans are not "religious," then you have not talked to many and you have a lot to learn about a great many things!

How about I live with 8,000 of them.

Do you honestly believe that my dirty words are soiling the quality of this blog more than your trolling is? Really?

And I realize that as big a Turd in the Punchbowl of Discussion that you are, I also have turned into "that guy" by turning a football discussion into a personal bout. I apologize for mine and Dirish's waste of space on this forum, and I will try to focus my future comments on football.

Dirish, feel free to respond. I'll probably read it, but unless it's something particularly offensive and pig-headed and I feel the need to defend myself, I'm not going to respond. Have fun. Don't take yourself so seriously.

I guess no one liked my posts about going to confession with the Irish down and coming back and the Irish in the lead.
"Baby J" said I had so little Faith. I reminded him of the mustard seed that fell on the rock.
I love this site and really enjoy the comments thru-out the game.
Denver, these guys are all good guys, I really look forward to Jim from Redondo Beach.
I was in the Army with the craziest ND fans in the world.
Listened to the U$C v. ND game in 1964. Started at 4:30 am Saigon time.
A friend of mine Mike Raschi, from Springield Mass, a nephew of NY Yankee great Vic Raschi, took out his M-16 and emptied a full clip into his German made telefunken hi-fi radio-tv. He then with my helped through the piece of $hit out on the company square.
What were they gonna do?
Send 'em to Viet-Nam!!!!

One other thing:
I can't read the sport pages when ND loses. Not for the whole week.
I didn't read any of the blogs on the right hand column last week.
Today is glorious, I"m reading like a mad-man, all blogs, newspapers, etc.
Funny huh!
And I'm only 67. One day it will get easier.
NOT

"Uh did anyone else notice that the whole Prudue coaching staff had the same mustaches?"

Dude, I so noticed that. It must be a requirement to coach there. Tiller, the OC and the DC all had the same mustache!

AS,
At least you have the decency to admit that you have taken this conversation out of context. Thank you. However, by implying that I am a "turd," you still demonstrate your naivete! I called you out for making this a site for personal attacks, and suddenly I am the "turd?" You live among 8,000 of them, really? Well, I lived among 8,000 of them for four years, and have made friends with thousands of them throughout my life. Bottom line, who gives a care? If you are truly that entrenched in ND culture, then you will know that most alumni and a good percentage of fans are Catholic, and that the occasional inappropriate word may rear its ugly head in reference to our football team or other matters, but in situations like this it is simply unnecessary!

Denver, AS, et al--the blog is about notre dame football. often its incredibly intelligent analysis (the staff), other times its the emotions of devoted fans getting the best of us, one way or another (the posters).

Let's keep the focus on the football and not eachother, shall we?

Jim Masterson--you do that too??? I could only read the baseball pages. I was hoping that it would get better (I'm 24) but apparently not. This obsession goes on for life, I guess.

Big props to my fantasy BGS draft pick, Ethan Johnson, for continuing to play well. And to Jimmy Clausen for getting a haircut. And to Corwin Brown for chewing out Pat Kuntz for whatever he did.

Yak, I'm sorry to tell you it only gets worse with age. Keep your heart healthy and strong; you're gonna need it.

Denver, maybe you should try NDnation.com. I hear they're pretty civilized over there.

Reading these posts brings up images of what fair-weather fans are really like.

Sheesh guys...so many of you threw the towel in at halftime.

Shame on you!

Go Irish!

don't confuse fair weather fans with realistic fans. cause there have ebb storm clouds over the Golden Dome for a long long time.

Denver Irish? I'm gonna de-lurk here and point out that you don't own this site. The people who DO own the site have made no effort to police profanity or insults in the Comments, and that is THEIR decision to make... not YOURS.

If you don't like the profanity, send an e-mail to the people who run the site and ask them to tone it down. Or go start your own site, and then you can set your own standards on what is and isn't allowed in the Comments. Hell, you can even BAN people! What a power-rush, huh?

In the meantime, since you're so busy telling other people what not to post, I'm going to tell YOU what NOT to post: don't post shitty comments telling other people what they're not allowed to post.

And yes, I used the profanity intentionally. Hopefully it offends you. I'm sure you need it.

Anyone else get the feeling Denver Irish brushes his teeth after every meal and pees sitting down?

We're with you, AS.

Time to start worrying about Stanford...you know Harbaugh will have his boys fired up and we'll need to match the intensity. Old Time Hockey.

Talkin' about peeing sitting down.
Did ya hear the one about the three (3) old guys sitting on a bench in Miami?
First Old Guy; It takes me forever to urinate, it's so slow and weak.
Second Old Guy; It takes me forever to have a dump, I need all types of softeners, etc.
Thir Old Guy; Not me! I wake up in the morning, take a nice strong healthy pee and then a massive dump.
Then I get outa bed.

Yak; While other interests have waned. I no longer follow baseball as I once did, or basketball, hockey, etc. Notre Dame football still has theis gigantic humongous hold on me.
Not only the football, but all things Notre Dame related. From the Men & Woman's lax, b-ball, soccer, etc, to being pi$$ed off every time I see ND ranked 18th or 19 in the US News & World Report.
How did they fall from 15th to 19th. They miss a building or somethin'.
Geez, I think they're anti-Catholic over at USNWR, how could you have a ND with a philosophy so at odds with the present mores and culture of the academic left.

Jim Masterson, while I oftentimes disagree with your postings, I gotta' admit you are a dyed-in-the-wool one of us.
Big Time.

Go Irish (even in Denver)

The once and future BillH

Denver Irish,

I get you man. You're one funny mofo.

Guys, chill out with the gradeschool name calling. We won. Relax. No reason for anyone, whether you're in the "OMG We SUXXOR PLZ CAN HAZ NU COACHES?!?!" camp or the "ALL PURDUE'S BASE BELONGZ TO US GOLDEN TATE FTW!!111!!ONE" camp, to be so bitter.

I guarantee that at least half of you jumping on people for "negativity" after we were up 35-21 were cursing Weis and thinking we were horrible when we were down 7-0. I'll admit I was.

I also HOPE that ALL of you negative Nancys calling for Weis's head because we lost the coin toss (seriously, guys--do we really need negative comments BEFORE the game starts?) were cheering and yelling and happy that we won, and RECOGNIZE that we're improving...slowly, but improving. I know some people just claim to be "realistic" and that anticipating us sucking eases the pain when we actually do, but do NOT let yourselves get to the poing where you WANT us to suck, just to prove you right. When the team does well, step up, be men, and say "nice job, Armando...Nice Job, Jimmy...nice job, O-line...Nice job, D..Nice job, Weis". It disgusts me that we've got posters who come on here and call Weis a "fat piece of S", etc., and make jokes about him eating on the sidelines. Please, people--leave that to the Michigan fans. Have some more class than that. Criticize play calling, criticize coaching, but again, act like you left 2nd grade.

And yeah, the fade routes are stupid...except that they work. I don't get it either, but it works.

They throw that fade route whenever they feel like the over-the-top help is committing too much to the line. Truthfully, its ten times more effective when you have a strong running game that forces the safety to play the run more. Yesterday we were finally able to establish a strong run game. There's a lot of things Clausen needs to get better at but he is very precise on his fade routes (except the Kamara fade towards his inside shoulder.) We are getting better Gentlemen.

Nate:
Great post.

For those of you who care, ND does not have a monopoly on the "holier than thou attitude". Try going to Happy Valley for starters and listen to Paterno, who always does the right thing by suspending players (but only for meaningless games).

yak

You were right on. I would rather not hear a bunch of squabbling. (Hint to Denver and AS). Hey we're all for the same team so let's act a little bit like a team. It's okay to disagree with someone's opinion but you don't need to tear down the person. We can still respect the person while disagreeing with the person.

That said, I saw a different team today than I have seen since pre bowl game 2006. I hope this team shows up every week from now on. Leave last week's team at home.

PU still beat ND in the O and D stats. It seems like ND held PU at critical times. Also, the Blanton pick and exceptional runback made turned the game around. The ST played very well with the exception of the missed FG and Walkermade his first over 40 yard FG. We've heard how good AA was going to be and now we have finally seen it. I much prefer this team to last week's team.

Although I mentioned it yesterday, I wanted to discuss Jimmy's vision on the field today. I'd have to go back and look at the whole game but I remember a few specific plays where I noticed this.

The first was a situation where we went on a long count and he saw the safety roll before the snap. He immediately saw that the split out would be in one on one coverage and threw that way.

The second was the Grimes touchdown. PU left eight in the box for the fourth down play and the secondary was playing a three-deep cover one (one on one coverage). Understanding that Grimes is faster than a safety, Clausen correctly chose him. After posting yesterday that I thought the fade set this up, I changed my mind. I actually think it was the presence of the running game that caused them to think we would run it on 4th and 3 (amazing, I know). Either way, the point is that Clausen was able to recognize the talent differential and hit a streaking Grimes perfectly for six.

The third was an early down in a series in the late third/early fourth. It was clear that we were looking for the fade again, but Purdue has good coverage over the top. Clausen was able to go to his fourth or fifth option, Allen, who was in the flat. This reminded me of the Quinn story about always being a 50% passer. It seems Clausen is beginning to recognize the value of completions.

Everyone complains about how Chaz can't develop players. While most of the these comments are usually aimed at the OL/RBs, I think Clausen's development since the start of the season is proof that Weis can develop QBs, if not anyone else.

This is really all speculation though, he just may have been lucky. Either way, he needs to continue to get his completion percentage up and cut down in the risky throws to the flat. But it is progress.

It was my first game yesterday. Not a cloud in the sky. Absolutely perfect day. I've been to the past two years spring games, but this was undescribable.

Officer McCarthy - be careful when driving out today. Flying out of the stadium would be plane silly.

Go Irish!

The offense looks much better now that Kamara has been relegated to the second string. Armando seemed to find a spark yesterday - maybe it was just improved blocking - but gosh dang if it isn't reassuring to be able to run the ball down somebody's throat.

Loved the defensive adjustments at halftime. We still look like a D that can be gashed by talented tailbacks, but you could have expected that by looking at the depth chart.

All in all, I'd say we look like a team that - dare I say it? - is executing its fundamentals and developing some grit. Another great recruiting class and look out.

I stand by my prediction that MSU will not beat us again.

GO IRISH!

John05 -

I'm not sure, but wasn't the TD pass to Grimes on 4th and 7, not 4th and 3? Regardless, I didn't know that it was a Jimmy audible, and if it was that is impressive. I love to see a quarterback that has as much knowledge as talent.

However, there is one issue that I have with him that has been apparent in every game this year. He seems to struggle in checking off his receivers. I think he's a little better now than he was in the SDSU game, but he stares at his receivers and refuses to look elsewhere, even when there's a wide open receiver on the other side of the field after the coverage has broken down.

Just an observation.

Jim Masterson, you are me in the future.

At this point, I can still read the papers even when ND loses, but I don't see that lasting much longer.

My guts start churning on Friday morning. Saturday morning, my wife says, "Is there a game today?" Well it's Saturday, and it's September/October, so pretty much yeah. I almost envy her in that it doesn't matter to her what happens in the game, even though she was born on Our Lady's birthday, September 8th. Her weekend isn't coloured by how the Irish do, but mine is.

If you're like me and you have a non-ND fan in the house, you can always count on a few innocent comments, sometimes funny and sometimes frustrating. I remember in the season finale vs. Stanford in '05, the underdog Cardinal took the lead with less than two minutes left, and my wife said, "That's not much time, is it?" Ouch.

No, it wasn't much time. But fortunately (thank you O-Line and Darius Walker) they came through.

Jimmy Clausen gets better every week. The O-line must do the same.

The Purdue mustache thing is what makes life worth living, especially when you see those 'staches twitching in frustration as the Boilermakers receive yet another lashing in the confines of Notre Dame Stadium.

I haven't seen that kind of Cult of Personality thing since we used to get pictures of the Iraqi parliament, and all those guys were rocking the S. Hussein beret/'stache combo.

"I really thought either Joe tiller was getting younger or something. That weirded me out too."

Holy cow! You may be right. So it is the 'Cocoon' thing really happening.

Joe Sub; The Mrs. will keep you grounded somewhat.
My mom would complain to my father, " Why do you need to read six Sunday papers, because Notre Dame won, isn't it the same story."
My pop would just shrug his shoulders.
My pop was the nicest guy, everyone's dad is, but he'd lose it for ND football. My mom would send him to the attic or cellar, and we'd hear him fuming and ranting.
Not as bad with the Yankees, but he grew up spoiled by ND & the Yanks.
This is the best site on the blog-osphere.
When I complain it's always with a smile or a laugh in my mind.
I really love "Big Jim" from Redondo Beach, and always enjoy his posts.
Same with the Voice, OC, Ka, Ka Ka, Knoxville, Indymac, sounds like a bank!
Ant a cast of many.
Thanks Boyz.

If the second half ND team shows up the rest of the year, we very easily could finish the year 8-4, or even 9-3. This is still a young team in all skill positions, and that is the exciting/frustrating part. This team put it together for a half, and has definitely shown signs of improvement, but they need to do it on the road now. Hopefully they can build off of this and really get the wheels in motion. Get some more wins, go to a bowl, and win the darn thing.
GO IRISH!!!!!

Oh, man, I can't believe I just read through the entire Game Day comment section - I think that I'm THAT excited after yesterday's game is a great sign in & of itself.

Actual football stuff 1st:
*John05 - thanks for the great late summary. Really liked the Clausen comments, especially the "check-down to AA" that I also noticed in-game and loved. Was looking for check-downs this week as JC specifically mentioned that in an interview. Great to feel a lil more confident that Jimmy won't try to force it every time.
*Also saw a comment or two about AA having better vision this week - but I've gotta disagree a bit: some of those runs there was nothing to see... no players, just grass b/c the holes were so huge! Can't believe how well the OL upped their play, esp after the half.
*Can we ease up on Kamara & Schwapp a bit. From what I've seen, AS has improved & looks healthy. Hasn't been in on a ton of plays, but when he has been, I've seen some good blocks. DK looked great last year b/c he seemed, to me, to be our most complete WR not named Grimes. W/out looking at the numbers, I'd guess he's doing about as well as last year this time of year, when he was still climbing the depth chart. He's not been great (& his "quiet" start has been magnified by Tate & Floyd's coming out parties), but I think he's gonna have a break out game soon & quiet some nay-sayers.

Also, I sas watching the game on TV (first time seeing ND in HD, btw... Awesome!) & don't usually follow along here for the game day rants. Funny to re-live the game after the fact: I couldn't help but get annoyed at all the negativity at first; then I forced myself to remember how much swearing I was guilty of in the 1st half! Over-reacting = ND fan bread & butter, and this place is Vent-Central, courtesy of BGS. Those of you who're uptight about that - you're not gonna change it. Sure, some of the comments cross the line, but that's why it's call VENTING. You yell b/c you're frustrated & mad, and of COURSE people will say things that they probably shouldn't say &/or don't really mean.

Great game overall for ND! Looking forward to next week vs Stanford (got tix: woot!), & thanks to anybody who actually read this entire post!
GO IRISH!

Would appreciate any help on this as I have not been to Notre Dame in many years. I am going to the Stanford game this week from NYC - advice on where to park, where to go for a few pre- and post gamers, etc. would be great. Thanks for any advice and Go Irish.

Alum Son:
Here is some info:

1. On Friday, there is the football luncheon at noon in the Joyce Center (North Dome)--you need tix but if you go over about 10, you might get some that others have turned in. CW speaks at these.

2, At around 4, the Band marches from the Dome to its practice area near the south dome of the Joyce Center. This is fun to see

3. Pep Rally starts at around 6:45--you need tickets to get in an the line is very long.

4. Knights of Columbus on campus has a smoker around 8PM.

5. The Linebacker across from the new softball stadium is always hopping as is Logan's-Senior-Alumni Bar.

6. There is the Drummers' Circle at midnight in front of the Dome. These are becoming better than the pep rallies.

7. On Saturday, there are several places to park-"white" field, Holy Cross College, St. Mary's. If you go a few blocks off of Angela, you can park in a residential neighborhood for free.

8. The South Quad is loaded with food.

9. The Band plays on the steps of Bond Hall about an hour and one-half before the game. There is a Drummers' Circle there afterward and the trumpeters play inside the Dome afterward as well.

10. South Dining Hall puts on a nice spread after the game.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Lush. Much appreciated.

Tickets to get into an ND pep rally?!? That's where I always took visitors to show them a real rally! Never had any problems after that with whose school had the most spirit. Sound like it's been professionalized (and maybe sanitized?) I'll bet there aren't even any rolls of TP being hurled around!

I like Clausen's haircut.

Do you think he got at Charlie Weis' Flat Top Barbershop, as mentioned on ABC's telecast of the Michigan State/Notre Dame game last week?

ND67Aquajock:

Some years back, one or more people were injured entering a pep rally. In an effort to improve crowd control, tickets are now issued at the football stadium windows. They are free but it is a real pain to wait in line for a LONG time to get them.

that was slightly impressive. yes, it was purdue, but the progress was encouraging. I will be impressed if they finish 9-3

AS, you're probably right about 3 vs 7, I was doing the review from memory. If it was 4th and 7, it was most likely part of his progression or a route change and not an audible. Either way, recognizing the speed matchup is key.

Does anyone have any ideas on WHY the O line looked so much better yesterday than for the last year and a half (besides PU's low ranking defense?

Joe Subway, according to the Chicago Tribune, Clausen cut it himself with help from Armando Allen at the end. Nice teamwork, guys!

Allen did a good job of finding the holes.

For the record though, I liked the old do. There is nothing sweeter than sporting Kruk-style wack cuts when tearing it up on the field. "Oddball and money."

...hmmmm...was there a reason why Terrell Lambert was taken off the field in the second half yesterday?...and why we stopped bleeding defensive yards in the second half?...

...p.s. ...the best blocker on the field yesterday?...David Grimes downfield...

Still have not seen any posts clamoring for Skip Holtz to replace CW. Why?

...difficult to comprehend why ND is only an 8-point favorite over Stanford in South Bend...

Thanks for that info, OC mj.

pangborn77, you have officially been awarded Rhetorical Question Asker of the Thread Award. Enjoy!

I hope ND doesn't feel like overwhelming favourites over the Cardinal. Seems to me that it could only work against them. Remember, the crafty Jim Harbaugh is um, what's the word...crafty. He once beat USC and he's ex-Michigan.

Here's a question for the not to distant future. Anyone guess at what time the game with North Carolina will start? I'm assuming that the ABC/ESPN congolomerate (did I spell that right?) has the rights to the game. And if ND comes in with a 4-1 record vs. a UNC with a similar record, I'm guessing it's a 3:30 kickoff (eastern).

I'm asking because I'll be driving back from the beach that day and want to make sure I'm home in time to see the game.

...8-points is overwhelming?...

Skip Holtz is soooooooo old news.
Man, you can't lose to Houston.
He needs some more training.
K'vill ya' can't spell conglomerate w/o congo.
Jeff Smardjzia(sp) made the Cubs play-off roster. Weeeooooo!!

PS. The Mets bit the Industrial Size Extra Large one today. Hah!
Greed; Defined by the OED. The Red Sox v. the NY Yanks, in a day-night, two admission games for the end of a already pre-determined playoff.
Hah!
I think Polo, the game, not the clothier, is free. Maybe ya gotta help scoop up the horse dung, but it's still free.

Jim Redondo, you seemed miffed that the Irish were ONLY 8-point faves. I'm just saying I wouldn't like that spread to get into double digits. I'm happy they're improving and winning, but, especially this season, who can tell about anybody from week to week?

It's spelled S-A-M-A-R-D-Z-I-J-A! Come on, it's not that hard. I have a harder time with 'Huarte'.

As soon as I saw Clausen's new 'do, it made perfect sense to me. He was growing it for as long as the winning streak lasted. That ended courtesy Sparty, so off it goes.

Not a bad job, considering he did it himself.

I've heard at USC they all have their own professional stylists. I heard this from me. I'm just saying.

What do y'all think it will take for ND to be ranked? I don't think they should be for now, but if we win against Stanford and at NC I think we'll be ranked (especially with all the teams falling out). As of now we've got some votes in the USA poll. Anyone think it will happen?

I dont think we deserve to be ranked until we beat either : BC or Navy. Both are fairly legit teams, maybe the only ones we have on our schedule outside of USC.

though that 'Cuse/Pitt game sounded like a real thriller...

Joe Subway--I too believe they have personal stylists. And probably personal assistants. I base this on the fact that I strongly dislike USC.

..."What do y'all think it will take for ND to be ranked?"...

2009

Nothing rhetorical about my question regarding Lou Holtz. Simply because the negative posters have not answered it does not mean it has no answer.

ND will be ranked if it wins the rest of its games. If not, take a guess.

Sorry. My earliest post should have said Skip rather than Lou Holtz.

Notre Dame is ranked #9.

On the Princeton Review of best foods on campus.
Wooeee!!
Come on Pang, I had the truck backed up for CW, after the 1st qtr.
The previous year and the futility of the DSSU, & MSU games were way too fresh and not to subtle reminders of where this team was playing and their ability or lack of ability.
Even CW sid in his PC yesterday, we have to give the fans a chance to cheer, and we(ND) CW's ND team, had not.
As much as I love ND, I would never be presumptuous enough to personalize the university as "WE."
That's for CW, Voice, and the other ND grads.
It's really frustration talking and I find that always amusing.

@GB

From my own experience, and from talking to a former ND OL friend, the biggest problem he saw in the Michigan St. game wasn't scheme or even mental mistakes, but just that the OL wasn't playing "tough." To be a successful OL, you have to play with a certain attitude, a certain chip on your shoulder. Without it, it doesn't matter if you make all the right reads and adjustments or gain 30 lbs, you're still not going to move the line of scrimmage.

I can't remember which former OL was on the UND video, but he also said "I came and played as a freshmen, and while I was very athletically big and strong, I didn't know how to play tough. The older guys really taught me that season what it meant to play tough." We haven't had the luxury of tough, older lineman in a while, and I think the results have spoken for themselves.

What I think we saw in the second half of the Purdue game, was the first glimmer of the Irish OL starting to learn how to play tough on their own. They got punished last year, and had started to hold their own this year, but finally we saw them start to give out some of the licks they'd been tacking so often.

I'm not sure what pushed them to it, I just hope they keep it up, and pass it on to the younger Irish so we can get that tradition back.

really doubt that jim (redondo). I think Phil Steele had us somewhere around 18th by the end of the season and I think that is legit. Each week has looked better (both Purdue and MSU would have devastated this team last year...oh wait they did) and this year we have (4?) sacks going into our 5th game. If we can take the next 2 or 3 I'd say we start sneaking into the polls. If this team is going to make waves next year it would be a huge help to start the season being ranked.... just sayin.

As for all the negative commentary earlier... I understand frustration after last year but at the most we were down 7 - it's really a bit excessive. These guys aren't getting paid (we aren't usc - zing), just ease up a bit.

As for the game - having a coming out party for Floyd, Rudolph, Blanton, Trevor, and (kinda) Ethan Johnson was freakin awesome. I must have said the phrase 'true freshman' as many times as Hammond mentioned how well Sheets did against ND in the past... ie, a lot.

The fade - yea its predictable but why stop trying it when they can't stop it? We recruited big physical WR's for a reason - use em. I don't think any of the teams between Purdue and BC can stop it either - so get ready for more of them.

The play by McCarthy was clutch in soooo many ways. That set up the Blanton play to turn that game around. Before that stop we had zero momentum - after it the tables were turning.

Clausen...just wow.

Great game - bring on the trees.

Let's hope the O-line can play with toughness for the rest of the season and with some damn consistency. I think they still have a ways to go for the running game but this was a good step forward (unlike the giant step backward with the MSU game). I just wish that the O-line could learn toughness from coaching (Joe Moore) than just by themselves.

Hip hop star Lil Romeo and USC freshman point guard has a Beverly Hills barber who makes dorm calls. But he rides a bicycle (instead one of his many cars) so he can blend in. Say what?

Jim Harbaugh is a good coach and pretty intense. His "craftiness" should be respected.

@Jim Masteron

#9?! What?! I thought SDH was #2 in the country!

I believe we will be ranked later in the season. That is, if our progression continues. Possibly after the UW game. It will be prime time on ABC. We will be 5-1 or 4-2. Our true strengths and weaknesses will be apparent.
The athleticism of Golden Tate and the clear talent of Floyd are amazing. Both of these players will see the field on Sundays, no doubt.
Jimmy is coming along wondefuly. If he can learn to check down a little more instead of looking for the kill shot his consistency will increase exponentially.
One more thought.
Charlie getting pumped up after Grimes scored was a clear sign that he is finally starting to get it.
His X's and O's are truly solid, however he now understands that emotion is an integral part of the college game, and needs to coach accordingly.

@bs0ng

To a certain extent, you just can't teach toughness to OL in today's coaching environment. You can't do things today exactly like they were done in the past, and even in Joe Moore's case, he still had older guys to show the new guys the ropes. You can keep blaming the coaches for everything if you want, but clearly somewhere the light just has to go on in the players heads, and that isn't something 100% under the coach's control.

Sorry if I'm straw-manning you, I just get a little sick of people treating everything like it was 100% under the coaches ability/control to fix. They can only do so much, and then the players have to do the rest... that's why you actually play the game. Sure the coaches have lead responsibility, of course, they get MOST blame, but not ALL blame.

Clearly our OL coaching has left something to be desired, and they should get some blame for that, but if our guys can continue improving, they deserve some credit too.

Again, wasn't trying to put words in your mouth, I guess my pent-up frustrations get taken out on other people who's pent up frustration gets taken out on the coaches.

Yeah I get what you mean. It does get frustrating, and even though the coaches only can do so much, sometimes it feels they're not doing enough. I just never want to see another 2007 is all.

Financial markets ...bailouts ..derivatives.

Any chance we can create futures on ND football helmets?

We have national interest and an NBC contract...in this case ,maybe CNBC....whaddya think?

Interesting stats -
Notre Dame last year was 90th in the country in yards allowed per kickoff return (22.75).

This year, the Irish are no. 1 (13.94).

The Irish are also currently 10th in yards allowed per punt return. Last year, they were ranked 39th.

It's funny how much stronger and more explosive those offensive linemen look when the running game gets going.

Yak,

Don't overlook North Carolina as a legit team....they will give us a hard time and a good game, especially on their home field.

Jim Masterson....sorry about my bad spelling. Grey Goose has a way of doing that to me some times.

Back in the 50's and 60's, the pep rallies were held in the old field house. They were spontaneous, LOUD and energizing. These modern day sanitized versions are about as exciting as watching grass grow. Many times, Sports Illustrated covered them just because of the spectacle. In particular, they wrote a three page article after the Oklahoma game in 1961.

I love reading this thread after a game, but Denver really zapped the energy and fun for me today. If you don't enjoy the type of back and forth that flows here, then don't read it! Find another site that suits you better --we want you to be happy. But, for me, I love Voice and Masty and OC MJ and Yak and the Mexican Leprecaun and t2, etc. Don't always agree with everything they say, but I love the dialogue, different points of view and especially the humor. Let's leave the Denver-style personal attacks to others and continue to enjoy the best ND football web discussion going...please.

K'ville, if I didn't have Spell Check, they'd instituionalize me.
I blame it on the chlorine or whatever they put in the water after WW2.
Remember the General in Dr. Strangelove? He was right.
Never trust a commie, Mandrake.

I am hoping we got to see on Saturday the day that Armando Allen "Got it" He looked like a complete back out there. The run back at the beginning of the 3rd quarter was great. I have been saying for two seasons now he has the speed just not the vision. He showed on that kickoff great vision and speed. The rest of the 3rd quarter they were able to get him so good holes he hit hard, gaining good yards. I have not seen that out of him, that consistently to this point. If he can keep up what he learned we will have a good running back. I think hughes is just too slow unfortunately, though he is a good blocker and really knows how to get yards after the first hit. Aldrigde has never been the same since his injury, which is unfortunate since he seems to be a balance between Hughes and Allen, more of an "ideal" back. In any case, we need to keep the running game going. The OL attacked the defense in the 3rd quarter. It sounds Charlie really put it on the table with the guys during halftime. It was good to see a complete offense, while the deep routes definitely are great tools, having a balanced passing and running game is a key to constant success. This team proved to me today more than ever that they have the raw talent, but are young. We will continue to see a see-saw effect for the rest of the season. I hope Charlie recognizes that this is a young team which will thrive off of the "rah-rah" stuff. This is completely supported by the "crank me up." True it might not be a constant thing, but young men and teams need that kind of energy to a point since they ARE LEARNING HOW TO WIN. That team out there looked like it is starting to believe it can win. Something which Lou talked a great deal about. I am hoping for a good week of practice to go strong into the game this weekend. The Cardinal will be a tough opponent, which we would be silly to overlook. I still say 7-5 for this team and it will be both a fun and maddening season, but in a good way. Stay positive all, go Irish.

...I saw Stanford barely beat a very bad willingham team (redundant?) on Saturday...

...ND should be favored at home by more than 8 points...I'd say take a second on your home and bet it...but we all know that financing is dead except if you live on Wall Street...thanks George...

...P.S. ...North Carolina has a VERY good team...

...and... as it looks like that Lambert is being benched for a freshman...I'll raise my prediction from 7 wins to 8...

I'll take Blanton or Gray over Lambert any day of the week and twice on Sunday's. If he ever looked back to the ball he would have 5 pick's by now.

ND vs UNC set for 3:30...tarheelblue.com

Thanks for the schedule info there Tarheel. Good luck against U Conn this week.

Oklahoma has snapped the tie with ND for most appearances at number one in the AP Poll. I hate that. I hate losing the overall winning percentage mark to Michigan, too. Losing is lame. New motto: "Victory or Death". I like the urgency of it. "While Her loyal sons are marching onward to victory... or death!"

UNC does look strong. Brandon Tate and Hakeem Nicks(sp?) definitely pose a threat down field with Little being a capable runner.
That being said, they have yet to really be tested.
McNeese State? Really?
Rutgers is struggling.
Vatech offense is ranked 108.
Miami just cant get it together.
I'm not saying we are head and shoulders above any one of their past opponents.
Statistically we are better in some areas, worse in others.
The game will be extremely competitive.
Here's hoping the Irish can capitalize.

Fighting B; Yeah, but if you subtract the time spent in jail, during the Switzer years, the Irish still have an insurmountable lead.

Have any of you read; John Pearlman's "Boys Will Be Boys." The escapades of the Michael Irvin, Deion, Nate Newton, Emmit Smith Cowboys.
It is hilarious and bizarre to say the least.
Switzer's bar bill for the Super Bowl against the Steelers????
You ask??
North of $100,000.00. No $hit. he was going out in style. Invited all his homey's from Oklahoma and Arkansas to stay in his two bed-room suite.
100K extra large ones.
Amazing and Jones is even a bigger clown.

Kyle

Thanks for the info on the OL. I guess we will never know whareally goes on in practices. I just can't help but think about the Joe Moore story where he has the OL individuals one on two where they just keep hitting each other all practice. I am sure it is in these archives somewhere. A similar way of coaching is seen in the movie "Miracle" where Herb Brooks has the team skate sprints after a game and even when the lights go out. Whatever it is, I hope they keep up the "toughness".

Has anybody else noticed a basic trend in our offense ie when the single back lines up 7 yards off the ball we run, when he's 5 back or on either side of Clausen we throw 100% of the time... Just seems way to easy, gotta assume teams pick this up on film?? I caught this in the first quarter and it was correct 100% the rest of the way... Might help the run game if we weren't so freakin obvious...

CW's press conference.

Can someone help with these questions?

1. Was Gary Gray originally recruited as an offensive player, and he has converted to defense, or did I imagine that?

2. What's George West doing these days? Is he still on the roster? I remember his speed but very unsure hands on kickoff returns.

Joe Subway:

As far as I know, Gary Gray was a DB in high school and we recruited him as a DB. You may be thinking of Jonas Gray, the beastly freshman running back out of Detroit.

As for George West, I think he's just been buried on the depth chart.

"UNC does look strong. Brandon Tate and Hakeem Nicks(sp?) definitely pose a threat down field with Little being a capable runner."

The thing is, if there's a running game out there more woeful than ND's, it's UNC's. They can't run it straight ahead. The only runs they can pull off are to attack the very edges.

Hopefully, ND won't do what the U did this weekend and start celebrating a victory with 35 minutes left to go.

I haven't seen any evidence yet that Lambert is getting benched for Gray or Blanton. Both of those guys are rotating in and have been since the Michigan game.

Haven't seen Trevor Robinson mentioned here yet. I know Frosh OL aren't supposed to know toughness, but someone forgot to send Trevor the memo. His pull block ahead of AA on the right side in the 3rd Q. looked like a freight train that just kept moving people backwards.

UNC doesn't have the accurate, split-second decision making QB that Purdon't and even SDSU have. UNC's offense will have a harder time against our blitzes than anyone we've played to date. The most damage their stud WR, also a Tate, will do will be on reverses. UNC's D has some good, young athletes, but if JC keeps developing at this rate he will thoroughly abuse their secondary. UNC is going to be very good next year, though.

@Mike81

You are absolutely correct on Trevor Robinson, he's playing very well. He really stands out because it really is very rare that a freshmen OL plays so well.

Don't look now, but ND's total offense is ranked 88th! First time in the Top 100 since '06?!!? And only five spots (and five ypg) behind tOSU after they've played their usual complement of three non-conference cupcakes.

all i know is that michael floyd is the real deal

I highly suggest that everyone reads the comments between, oh, 4 and 445...stuff like Weis should be fired, the team sucks, etc....you guys are too much. Big win for the Irish.

..."I haven't seen any evidence yet that Lambert is getting benched for Gray or Blanton."...

...check out the game film...pictures don't lie...

Thanks, you're right, I mixed him up with "My Name Is" Jonas Gray.

M Floyd is ND's mini-"Move The Chains" T. Owens. We looked much better on 3rd down. Now that we got some rhythm, I think the next level of progression is consistency, and then we can definitely being to strike up the band regularly.

jim from redondo is right, TLambert played a majority of the game and actually saved us from a touchdown (I've never seen coverage from him like on that play; he was stride for stride, and even turned his head while diving with the receiver). Is the fact that the last of Ty Will.I.Am's recruits coming on strong (TL, Bruton) a sign that the phoenix is finally rising in South Bend?

The Irish are finally showing the weapons we all thought they had. Gonna be tough for media guys like Mark May to accuse ND of a lack of speed and talent.

That being said, I agree with Matt B., we are still going to see some maddening inconsistency. Also, the O-line needs to prove that they really took a step forward, and the results weren't just the benefit of playing a weak Purdue defense.

Stanford will give the Irish a game, they beat Oregon State, and have shown an ability to step up under Harbaugh. It will be interesting.

North Carolina has the weapons to hurt ND, let's hope that the Irish weapons can hurt them even more.

I think it's interesting how the predictions still range all over the place. 7-5 means we go 4-4 over the rest of the season--I just can't see that, we seem to be improving at a pretty good rate and our schedule just isn't that tough. On the other hand, there are no gimmes (except Syracuse). 0-4 Washington still took BYU to the wire, though they lost their only player in Locker, don't know if he'll be back in time to play us. Stanford beat Ore St, and we know what Ore St. did this past week. Pitt is mediocre, but all it takes is young mistakes by our guys. UNC will be tough, and I'm still penciling that in as a loss, because it's on the road. Navy beat a good Wake Forest team this past week. And BC, who knows? I guess I'm optimistic because I can't look at the schedule and see any games I think we'll lose other than USC (90%) and UNC (60%). The rest are complete toss-ups, other than 'Cuse.

I thought everyone was arrested?

It's great to see the level of confidence from the young guys. Sergio Brown in the first few games, Harrison Smith is always near the football, and look at the way Blanton came in on Saturday, dropped a tight end with a textbook tackle, then a few plays later did the pick-6.

These defensive guys are doing to the whole team what Tom Zbikowski used to do with an INT or a punt return.

In retrospect, I guess it's fortunate that ND has so many home games scheduled early this year. These kids seem to be able to get the emotional wave going and can ride it.

I hope they can do it on the road, too.

Obviously there's no quit in the Tar Heels. Miami had them in a tight spot on Saturday and they came back and won.

Locker is out 6-8 weeks.

You are welcome Knoxville. Been waiting for them to post the start time here for a few weeks. Frequent visitor to the site, but never post. Guess I should clarify that I am a long time UNC basketball fan since about 80, but longer time Irish football fan - since the Texas bowl game in 75 or 76? that I watched with my dad when I was 5. My wife (UNC grad) live here in Durham and became Rams Club members just so I could get season football tix and tix for the game. Anyone coming to town looking for suggestions on where to go I can post some things. Fans are pretty friendly as long as its not Puke or NC State.
