Needed to be said, and thank you.

How do we know that these negative comments were from Notre Dame fans? They could be from USC fans wanting to rile up Martin. Either way, the Facebook page is an invitation for potential trouble and maybe Martin should shut it down for a while.

The kids these days with their facebook...

In my day we just got faced.

Dude, that was funny as hell. It is also very true. I think that some people get a bit too caught in recruiting and think that they are recruiters. Lots of Irisheyes guys have facebook friendships with recruits and read their walls....kinda weird. If anyone I knew was networking with 17 or 18 year old boys....I would be worried. Good post

Great post with a hilarious ending.

Amen, how creepy. Best of luck to Martin and hope he remains Irish and devastates future opposition.

For what it's worth, I think things like coaches Twittering also adds to this whole mess. It promotes the idea of trying to communicate with these kids via whatever means necessary. They should ban all of this nonsense and go back to letting the head coaches actually go out and talk to these kids.

...what happened to Weis' edict that if a recruit continues the recruiting process with competitive schools after he verbally commits to ND...weis would yank his offer?...guess this only applies to 3-stars...

His offer wasn't pulled because he never went anywhere else, and as soon as he had a long chat with Corwin Brown and Randy Hart where both coaches addressed all his reasons for wanting to have a plan-B (as he, in a great irony, termed it on his facebook), he no longer was interested in leaving.

Weis has only really pulled one scholarship that's widely known about and it was Omar Hunter and he was a 5-star. I hardly think Weis could be accused of giving elite the preference there.

Jim, that was not Weis's statement. His original statement, after the late switches on Signing Day 2007, was that "if you're looking, we're looking." He has elaborated that this doesn't mean offers will be pulled -- only that ND might start looking for other guys at the position.

In Martin's case, a) it's not clear he's "looking" -- he hasn't scheduled any visits, and today said he may not ever do so; and b) I'd be shocked if ND attempted to play anything close to hardball with Chris. I really do think this will be OK.

Great email...I look forward to reading many more of your posts. Good stuff and very well written.

j/rb...back to summer sarcasm...the offseason doesn't apply to ellipses...

Fauria is transferring, according to Mike Frank.

Res Life strikes again. Thanks a bunch, guys.

wow.
such a good TE to leave.
man alot to worried about.
Recruiting and players leaving.
I hope everything turns out ok.

At least Fauria is calling out Res-Life. Maybe some good will come out of this and the power hungry nerds that control Res-Life will be forced to answer for another heavy handed punishment.

FAAAAAWK!

Relax Mexican Lep. Everything will be OK.

...this is Our Lady's university, lads...the football program is in god's hands...

...P.S....they should at least ask for the bookstore b'ball trophy back...

FAAAWK!

Without discipline, all is lost.

Fauria is Belgian, right?

Back from my BGS exile to Corsica.
These weirdos need to get a life.
Where's Redondo Jim when he's most needed??

Lo Wood is Irish (Rivals)

A word about ResLife. Head goon Bill Kirk gave a talk yesterday here in Pittsburgh for Universal ND Day. I went in prepared to hate him; he was rector of Stanford Hall the year before I arrived on campus, and all the upperclassmen despised him. Just as I was moving into the dorm, Kirk's photo appeared in the Observer: the upperclassmen cut out copies and taped them to every urinal in the dorm, so that you couldn't help but piss on Bill Kirk's face.

Turns out that Bill Kirk gives a great talk: he has a good sense of humor about his job and makes lots of one-liners at his own expense.

I'm not sure what that means. But it might mean that ResLife is not the enemy I have long assumed it to be. And it might mean that the opinions of a 19-year-old who's just been punished aren't to be treated as gospel truth.

..."and makes lots of one-liners at his own expense. "...

...wow...thank goodness for his self-deprecating humor...or we might have lost more than the two future All-American tight ends over the last 14-months....I'm sure the Maryland lacrosse team agrees...

I guess I'm old before my time. When did privacy become passe? The idea of putting all the details of my life online and sending it out through cell phone updates, etc. just creeps me out. We get warned all the time about protecting our important information and id's from people who want to steal them and cause our financial ruin, but we create more and more ways to let people know what we had for breakfast and what we think of the hot issue of the day, though no one cares. I don't care what Chris Martin, Charlie Weis, or Barack Obama put on their Twitter, Facebook, or whatever. It's all too much information, like when your grandmother starts telling you about her issues with bowel movements after the Denny's Grand Slam Breakfast.

"Talking", twittering, tweeting, facebooking, emailing, with high school kids is creepy, no matter the motivation. They're kids. Leave them alone. If he changes his mind, so what? Do you really think that putting nasty comments on his facebook is going to change his mind? Really? How about turning off the computer, cellphone, crackberry, whatever, and going outside with your OWN kids, or getting some exercise, and leave someone else's kid alone.

Amen Nate!

Our backfield is sick
when you throw the ball on us
Lo will bring it down

I remember as an ND student in the 70s, being told by the Dean of Students Office to get rid of our oversized fridge.
Apparently it was using too much power.

In addition to not contacting high school kids ...

Equally good advice is not having a facebook or whatever that you have to explain to your kids or future {potential} employers down the road.

Nice to see you back Jim. I thought it was Elba.

...Corisca...thx...

It would relate to a certain Corsican

As innocuous as all this might b4, can you imagine what the cheater schools are doing while we get overwrought with this,

Joe Magarac's the only guy I see here with a hint of common sense. Does anybody really know a 19-yr-old who applauds his own punishment? Have you never heard the 'not me' excuse? Res Life is ALWAYS portrayed as the bad guy - by the public mob that has no facts and nothing but excuses and rose glasses. I'm a 70's Domer and have a son at ND. I'm not sacrificing for him to attend Animal House U! And I am actually PROUD that ND has behavioral expectations. Would you rather have a team of 5-star girlfriend batterers and drug peddlers and bar fighters and felonious thugs? Do I feel sympathy for the young man? Certainly. But I also know enough about young males to understand that Res Life is there to keep a lid on what some fans would like to excuse as 'sophomoric fun'. In one story about this event, I read that the young man is banished from EVEN BEING ON CAMPUS until January. Now, you can call Res Life Draconian if you wish, but you CAN'T sell me on the idea that he was just some poor persecuted extra-tall guy out walking with his best girl, and it's all some huge misunderstanding. Nope - I'll give him credit for being a kid who made a mistake, but rules are rules. And the rules where there before he came along. And the rules are what loyal ND fans SHOULD hope will keep the character of our teams a matter of pride. I cringe when I read about some school or other where it's clear that 'anything goes', and the school keeps lawyers busy bailing kids out of jail - I cringe because given enough latitude, THAT could be ND. Do I wish he had manned-up and stayed, simply because he can catch a football? Well, sure - but not at the expense of sliding further down the slippery slope of ignoring the rules just to keep a kid on the field. Our entire society seems to specialize in making excuses for guys who can run and throw - for me, I'll hope ND tries to hold that line of acceptable behavior. No - the kids won't like it - that's to be expected. But in the end that's what will make them better men - - - and THEN those who went through the fire will appreciate what the kick-in-the-pants training did for them.

...no one knows what rule Fauria broke...but the bottom line is does the punishment fit the "crime"? These "boys" aren't studying for the priesthood...and even if they were...would the university make the seminarian "sit out" for a semester...or handle the transgression in a more equitable manner?...that wouldn't have such an impact on his life and, yes, his future career as a football player...jeeze the Sorin Hall fascists must be in neo-con heaven...
