The thing I love about the Gipper is that according to local legend, (I live where he grew up) the Gipper didn't even take a single college class 2 of his year playing at Notre Dame and was a true freshman at age 23. You have to love any player who gets injured for the year and then just leaves campus until next season.

Now, no more Oracle crap...

Actually, there is some speculation that a tree at the Grotto inspired Kilmer's poem. He was a huge fan of the Grotto. However, I prefer Ogden Nash's version:
