I think the football is scraping against a little grass there.

Check the SBT's gallery, their shot is a brief moment before this one, and it shows Grimes's hand is clearly underneath the ball. It wouldn't have changed positions in the split fraction of a second before this picture was shot. Touchdown.

On the other hand, Laws deserved the penalty. It wasn't the worst thing I've ever seen, but he clearly went back for more, twice. Sigh.

Check out Grimes' face in the second shot of the Mercury News series of his catch. He has this great "Holy crap I caught it" look.

The announcer says that the Standford QB "really got leveled" on his throw. Was it Trevor Laws who got to him? Is his personal foul a result of a potential scuffle with an offensive lineman because of it, or did someone else hit the QB and maybe Trevor was held a lot or something on the play and took offense?

Great photos this week, by the way. And even in that last photo of Grimes where perhaps the ball is touching grass... you don't actually SEE the ball touching any grass. For all we know his hand really is under the ball. My point being: no conclusive evidence of the ball touching any grass.

Laws wasn't the one who hit Pritchard. Laws and the lineman he was tied up with went down after the ball was gone, with Laws on top. As he was getting up, he pretty clearly leaned over and gave the guy an extra shot to the head with his right arm. Then he did it again. Who knows what the guy did that led up to it, but it was a personal foul.

Is it all over? Can I open my eyes now?

Could someone please let me know why Grimes's TD catch was nullified by the officials up in the booth? I'm still scratching my head on that call.

In response to a question on an earlier thread, here's what "going commando" refers to.

http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=v...feature=related

Really was a fun game to watch. We had 2nd row seats in the north end zone (just under the makeshift ND "band"), and yes, Grimes was robbed of an obvious touchdown. In fact, I don't remember a game with so many potentially game-changing reversals. It was almost comical by the end, though it would been anything but funny if we'd lost.

David won’t answer my text-messages, I sure would like to hear his take since he’s the ultimate source.
Thank goodness the “irrefutable evidence” from the booth did not cost us the game.
Is the season really over?

Here's to the horrible PA announcer at Stanford Stadium. If he wasn't the announcer, I would have enjoyed the game day experience about ten times more. Every time Stanford made a first down, it sounded like it was their first one ever. Ridiculous.

I was a few rows back in the end zone where Grimes was the victim of the worst call of all time, and was shocked that it was reversed.

I was also surprised that the ND band didnt make the trip...is that the norm? I know usually visiting bands travel, howcome they werent there?

I don't think our band travels to Stanford as their band is currently forbidden on our campus.

creole is correct.

As a former ND bando I can tell you that Stanford is banned from our campus. The reasons why were never made completely clear, but I know it has something to do with a half-time show the Stanford band put on in which they made fun of the Irish potato famine.

I also know that the Stanford band was banned from traveling by their administration after an incident aboard a plane. According to rumor the bandos decided to all move to one side of the plane to see what would happen.

Again, all just rumors.

Just check their wiki page...the 1997 incident was during my freshman year and I remember a ton of outcry from other Catholic universities, including BC.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sta...i/ Stanford_Band

I also know our band does not travel to every away game, although they have traveled to quite a lot of games this year. There were a couple of years while I was there that they only went to two games, typically USC/Michigan, and MSU/Purdue. They had to cut way back on the number of games they went to due to financial reasons, but it's good to see them travelling more this year.

I was also surprised that the ND band didnt make the trip...is that the norm? I know usually visiting bands travel, howcome they werent there?

The band went to Michigan, Purdue, and Penn State this year, IIRC. All bus trips. They don't go west to either Stanford or USC (Thanksgiving weekend), and usually don't fly until a bowl game.

Anyone have a vid of the Grimes catch?

After watching the replay of the Trevor Laws personal foul, it seems the penalty occurred while the Hail Mary was in the air. Therefore, the correct call should have been Stanford's ball, 1st and 10 at the Notre Dame 26 with no time on the clock and one more play before halftime. Yet another blown call by the officiating crew...

(I suppose maybe the penalty had not been called yet and there was subsequent scuffling not caught on camera after the interception was made.)

Way off topic, but quite humorous, nonetheless. An entry posted at 9:29 a.m. EST today, Nov. 26, on the Rumor Mill at profootballtalk.com is titled: "Steve Beuerlein Decries 'USC Thugs'". It says this:

"Just before halftime of Sunday's Titans-Bengals game, Cincinnati safety Marvin White and Tennessee running back LenDale White got into a bit of a skirmish, resulting in offsetting personal foul penalties.
CBS went to a commercial shortly thereafter, and when the network came back, the camera focused on (LenDale) White. CBS commentator Steve Beuerlein, who apparently didn't know his microphone was live, could be heard saying 'USC thugs, man':

LenDale White went to USC. Beuerlein went to Notre Dame.

The best part is when Beuerlein's play-by-play partner, Bill Macatee, says, 'he'd like to have that brief emotional explosion back'. Was he referring to White or Beuerlein?"

LMAO! Way to go Beuerlein! They are thugs!!

Sigmund, I haven't seen a really great replay, but my memory from the game was that the scuffle occured during the run back. If so, it would probably be treated the same as a block in the back or something like that. However, if it occurred during the throw, then you're right.

I was surprised that we were awarded a play in the first place, since I thought that a half only can't end on a DEFENSIVE penalty, whereas if it occurred during the run back it is now an offensive penalty.

I believe it was Brian Smith that leveled Pritchard on the Hail Mary.

Erik, I believe that the half can't end on any penalty, it is just that usually on an offensive penalty, the defense would just decline it and the game would end. I am not sure though.

It is really too bad Laws had to lose his cool. That was probably the best play I have ever seen ND have, taken on its own. Of course this season, no play is going to be as good as those that helped ND win big games in the past.

Thank you, Tom Zbikowski and the whole ND D.
Even if it didn't count, that was a thing of beauty to be treasured always.

My question is: was it something they'd practiced?
My guess is yes.

Thanks for answering my question about the band. Although it was nice when I heard the fight song, to look up into the upper deck and see an alumni band. It felt to me like they gave both the crowd and the team an emotional boost when they played.

Another question: Is there a post game presser available anywhere? I havent seen anything on Und.com

Eric, if the play occured after the interception then ND becomes the offense, if the penalty is declined touchdown. I hate that Laws was the culprit, I am surprised that was the one time they didnt call off setting penalties. It really was a thing of beauty though.

Walls has some wheels. Nice improvised blocking by everybody, too. No illegal ones.

Joe,

I think almost every team practices a play like that, just in case. Not really seriously, just at the end of practice they will run plays like that a few times and see what happens.

Replays continue to kill us this year. The BC game is another example of officials managing the outcome when they replayed the ball spot and took away a first down prior to the TD that was wiped out because of a questionable hold.

Don't know what ND could do in this particular case where ND's officials (Big East) were on the field while the replay officials were PAC 10.

In a season that where ND was in contention for a BCS bowl these calls could have been disastrous...

The ND band (I play trombone) went to three of the five away games this year, PSU, UM, and Purdue. We would have gone to a bowl game as well.

This year was actually a record high number of away games for the band, as we usually only go to two (just one--MSU--last year).

Next year, the band is planning a trip to the SC game, even though it's over Thanksgiving. I'll be a senior, so here's hoping that I can see my first ND win over SC.

Matt - you're not the only one hoping for that to happen!

How does Laws get that PF called on him during a live play? He shoved someone in the back while they were on the ground? Didn't the guy just tackle him? If it was a dead ball I could see it maybe but not during a live play.

I see.

I think this proves that Corwin Brown is a huge Edward de Bono fan.

Does anyone have a video clip of David Grimes catch? None of the espn video recaps showed it, and I'm having a hard time explaining how bad the call was to my friends who had the (mis?)fortune of not seeing the game.

LAWS WAS TAKEN TO THE GROUND WITH A FACEMASK!

Not that it makes it okay to give him a little baby shove on the ground, but HARDLY worth a penalty.

Does anyone have a count of how many touchdowns Zibby has had called back? Ohio State fumble. Punt return MSU last year, Saturday's game against the refs.

At least three and I think I'm missing at least one more punt return.

Someone from ND Nation filmed their TV while showing Grimes' catch and the replays. Can be found here:

http://www.ndnation.com/boards/s...d=469687; d=this

Oh man, I'd forgotten that the back judge was standing right there in perfect position to make that call. Pefect Position. He wasn't running to catch up with the play, he wasn't blocked by any players, he was right there leaning in to make the call. He didn't even hesitate, instant TD signal. What a jip. Great play.

Who IS that Irish fan wearing the Brady Quinn green jersey?

Sir, you are what I'm talking about.

And you showed the appropriate amount of indignation, too.

There is a picture in today's Observer showing a different angle of David Grimes' catch (best one) that clearly shows he had his hand underneath the tip of the ball.

They should outlaw crack in the replay booth...

nd17 - is that picture available on the website? i haven't been able to find any pictures accompanying articles. am i missing a link or something?

I just picked up the Observer on campus so I haven't seen it on the website. I will try to scan it sometime if I can't find it online.

Is there a normal "routine" for the offseason? Does Charlie do press conferences, etc?

Just curious. I need my next fix.

Dave

And on a side note…someone just posted two pics of Mike Anello in the restroom where I work. How very odd…

Mike Anello had another great punt cover on Saturday, sticking the returner as soon as he caught the ball. Is he coming back next year?

Not sure how that merits pics in a restroom, though.

Off subject, but are you guys doing a top 10 most painful plays of the season? I vote for Hazelton making Irish DBs look like Keystone Kops. History could dull some pain here and help with closure.

Just to let you all know, the picture is not on the Observer's website, so if I have time soon I will scan it and send it to BGS.

It is really obvious he caught the ball from the angle in the Observer picture. It just shows you ho great a grab that was...

Is there a normal "routine" for the offseason? Does Charlie do press conferences, etc?

His next presser should be on National Letter of Intent Day, in February.

Joe Subway

That was BQ. He figured he wouldn't be playing on Sunday so came to see his exes win on Sat.

We entered this year with many unknowns at most positions but going into next season we will know a little bit more about our team. Maybe a little early for next year's evaluation, but what else do we have to look forward to? These are my grades for each group as I see them at the start of next year along with comments.

OL - "B", now experienced
TE - "C", Bar is set high
QB - "B", Talent with experience
RB - "A", Proven combinations
WR - "C", Need a game breaker
DL - "C", Big shoes to fill
ILB - "C", No dominate force
OLB - "B", Youthful surprise
DB - "B", Talent and competition

Coaching - D

Erik, at least part of the band traveled to USC last year, although I think it was at the behest of Weis.

anybody else notice how fast walls is - he didn't even look like he was at full speed

Thanks for the info on the press conference, DJ. I appreciate it!

Dave

The video is no longer available. This calls for an emoticon :(

Walls is crazy fast. I'm a little surprised he doesn't run back kickoffs.

Any idea who will take over the punt returning duties next year? Walls could probably do it. West might be the guy, or Armando or Tate. Is punt returning that much different from Kickoff returning? Gotta call fair catches I suppose, and you don't have as much time to get a lane as you do on kickoffs.

Probably the aspect that makes returning punts and returning kicks so much different is the window that the returner has to catch the ball. Ball security is the most important part of a punt return so that's why it is favorable to have an experienced player catching punts.

"Ball security is the most important part of a punt return so that's why it is favorable to have an experienced player catching punts."

Exactly, we all saw what happened the last time George West lined up as PR, against UNC in 2006. Fumble. He didnt have the experience and maybe his nerves got to him.

The thing with Zibby returning the kicks was you know he was not getting tackled after being breathed on. Look at how many guys it routinely took the opposition to drag him down, what a fighter! I actually would have loved to see Zibby at running back at some point because he would have brought his nasty attitude and dished out a lot of punishment to would be tacklers.

I could see Armando Allen stepping in as the punt returner next year. He's got the experience of returning kicks, and also a healthy enough amount of touches on offense that he knows how to hold onto the ball. We all know he has the speed, but what about the vision?

One guy I am dying to see get some action is Harrison Smith. Why was he redshirted anyway?

Anybody hear if Crum wants to return for a 5th year? I hope so.

I heard a few weeks ago that Mo Crum is indeed coming back for a 5th year.

The dude in the green BQ jersey showed "rightous indignation", but you should have heard the Italian guy two rows behind us; my Italian isn't great, but I understand enough unprintables to know that he spent a five full cathartic minutes exhausting his repertoire of insults against the officials, while the Palo Alto sheriffs and the stadium security guys could only muse that they "knew" what he was saying but couldn't toss him from the stadium.

He drowned out everyone else, the Alumni Band included.

Awesome performance, my Roman friend.

article on concussions over on the NYtimes - it sounds like Standford's QB was in fact concussed. Harb doesn't come off well at all in the article.

I was pretty shocked when he came back in the game. The announcer seemed upset also.

I'd expect Harbough to take some shit for this, but Dixon's coach (I forget his name) seemed to get off the hook so... it's a different circumstance I know, but both coaches should be ashamed (I haven't heard Harbough's side of it, but it seemed pretty obvious the qb was pretty hurt)

so what do we do without college football now?

I think the worst part about putting the injured QB back into the game, is that Harbough was potentially risking the kid's life (at worst) just for the opportunity to win a pretty meaningless game. A win is a win, but it's not like it was the national championship game, and he had another QB (albeit 3rd string). It just seemed like an unnecessary risk to the young man without any reasonable reward.

Kyle, I don't know. I just don't know. I've tried following the Michigan coaching search over on mgoblog. That was fun for a while -- especially when they were certain they were hiring Ferentz and all the silly Wolverines stepped out onto the ledge. But, now there's a calm as they seem to be pretty certain they're getting Miles. If Miles pulls an Urban, it'll get fun over there again.

I guess there's always the NFL.

Or, you can get Rock Band on the Xbox 360. SWEEEEEEET!!!!
