That's the first time in god knows how long that an opposing coach has referred to our defense as bringing pressure and you don't know where it's coming from. Hopefully it translates into big plays and as Johnny Drama says VICTORY!

A couple of comments about USC -OS seem relevant. Sanchez was clearly rattled and is not much ahead of Jimmy in development. This game is proof of why you play the gameand don't just talk about it. For one night, the no name offensive line held off the NFL pro bowlers all night. Next week, they will regress. That doesn't diminish the result at all but merely points out that each week is an entity unto itself. Does anyone seriously think that Penn State is now certain to beat USC by 40?
What I saw was a team that believed, and got a couple of breaks along the way. We can beat SC this year, just like we could have lost to San Diego State.
Lets play them out
ND 35- PUR 13.

How, returning the vast majority of our offensive starters, after 9 months of weight training, with a spring and fall against Tenuta's defense in practice and a moderate amount of "game experience," are we ranked 107th? Our starting O is a bunch of high school AA's who have a year or two game experience. I don't expect us to be in the top quartile, because we are no super experienced, but come on, the bottom 10% of all D1 schools.

Great post, Jay! By the way, Penn High School, you know the one Braxton Cave is from, is in Mishawaka not South Bend. Please don't insult Penn like that.

I knew that, Josh! I swear.

As for ND's offensive output: it isn't pretty. But the season is young and full of cupcakes, skewing the rankings a whole bunch. A lot of teams are about to come back down to earth once they get into conference play.

This is not to say we are any good...just to explain the relative crumminess of our ranking at the moment.

I'd like to introduce the position of fullback to Charlie Weis. From what I see, the line blocks, Clausen gives a deep handoff in the backfield to a single back, he goes throught the hole and is tackled (easily) by the middle LB. Just imagine if a big FB knocked that middle LB on his rear!?!?
Defense is fine! Fullback Charlie, fullback!

Sorry, Jay but as Aretha always says, it's RESPECT. Go Irish!!!

Respek.

Dear Dan,

Thank you for your strategy tip. Unfortunately, we do not currently have anyone on the roster that fits your criteria. We have a player whom we have nominally designated the "fullback," but in four years he has proven wholly inept at even getting in an oncoming defender's way, let alone knocking anyone on his rear.

As always, I thank you for your letter and continuing support of Notre Dame football.

Regards,

Charlie Weis

No one can play FB? That can't be true! No kicker I can see - but no FB!?

..."Kory Sheet's rushing numbers are a little inflated. He's a good player, but his stat line has also benefited from two long plays."...

...Jay...maybe you could remind the ND fans what "long" running plays consist of...and "look like"...(e.g., c.c. 1989 videos)...

LeFevour is a dynamite quarterback. IMO he could be the Joe Flacco or Jay Cutler of 2008 (and the 2009 draft).

The Song of Hiawatha Francisco - You might be interested in reviewing the ND Michigan game from this year. Schwapp was pretty effective all game long. Two quick examples here and here.

To piggyback on Pat's point, Schwapp was only used 7 times in the run game. We only picked up 13 yards, but only one play could even be considered to be his fault. He and Rudolph blocked the same man, but there is a really good chance that it was Rudolph's mistake, not Schwapp's.

Brian Smith can be the new Irish Iron Man. Let him continue at ILB, and give him a shot at FB. His old man, Chris Smith, was one bad hombre for Notre Dame from 1981-84, and was a major reason why Allen Pinkett gained so many rushing yards during his career. Smith played fullback with a chip on his shoulder and always looked to deliver big knockout blows whenever he could. He absolutely relished trying to knock opponents' heads off. When watching Brian Smith play, one can plainly see that Chris raised him to play the game with the same violent attitude! Since we can't clone the kid, Weis needs to get him some work on offense too!
It's interesting that with all of Weis' highly acclaimed recruiting acumen, Brian Smith was an afterthought, and was only offered a schollie at the last minute when DE Ben Martin of Cincy LaSalle chose Tennessee. Ironically, Chris played his high school ball at, you guessed it: Cincinnati Lasalle.

With all our TE woes right now, let him get some snaps there...

Was Vrabel an ILB or OLB for the Pats?

...was this previously listed?...it should have been by one of Indiana's own... www.journalgazette.net/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/ 20080926/SPORTS0203/809260300/0/SPORTS& template=printart

...p.s....does Kamara look like he's mailing it in?...or is there another problem?...

Pat, thank you. I noticed during the Aztec game that when a fullback was in, the run seemed to work better, more push, the FB was getting that one man allowing at least a decent gain.

Zach Fraizer and Uconn come back to beat Louisville.

He also starred in "Monkey Bone"

Check that... Brendan Fraser.

Voice,

I thought I remember Brian Smith originally being committed to Iowa. Didn't Weis pursue him as soon as he re-opened his college search? Am I thinking of someone else?

Matt, you're right that Brian originally committed to Iowa, but wrong that Weis pursued him as soon as he re-opened his college search. I believe it was a combination of someone else (Trattou, maybe) decommitting to open a slot in the class, and Corwin Brown coming on board and thinking that Smith was an ideal fit for his defense.

Actually, I don't think Brian ever officially re-opened his search. I think it was something where ND was his first choice, so even when he committed to Iowa, he left the door open with ND, and when we called, he switched.

All I know for the Purdue game is that the running game isn't going to get better over a span of one week. It's probably going to take another offseason to fix it just like how the last offseason vastly improved the pass blocking. I hope I'm wrong though...

Mr. Wednesday got it right. Brian Smith was, initially, though tepidly, recruited by Notre Dame, but was not offered a scholarship, much to the disappointment of his father Chris who, by happenstance, was serving on the Notre Dame Monogram Club Board at the time. Smith then verballed to Iowa. When Ben Martin, for whom Notre Dame was holdng a scholarship, decided to commit to Tennessee, Corwin immediately persuaded Charlie to offer Brian a scholarship. He did, Brian called HC Kirk Ferentz and explained that he was changing his commitment from Iowa to Notre Dame. Iowa reacted fairly ugly, and feverishly tried to guilt-trip Brian into honoring his word, being a man, etc. Resolved to follow in has dad's footsteps, three-star Smith, a last minute addition to his Irish recruiting class, quickly distinguished himself as, arguably, the best player in his class.

Another game day! I would like to see the Irish come out and run a quick strike no huddle attack. The offense always seems to move the ball (even going back to the Quinn teams) when they do this. No shame in starting with the pass to open the run. I've seen flashes with this offense, and hope they can build on it and become a better as the season goes on.

No one is going to read this, but what the heck, I got nothing better to do waiting for the game.

Pat: Great setup with RESPEK. You knew you were going to hook someone.

bs0ng: Yup. The few hours of practice time they have each week is tied up into correcting the little things from the previous game and inserting the new game plan. Run blocking fundamentals are for spring ball and fall camp.

Voice in the Wilderness: Great info thanks for the post.

Southbendblarney: Man do I agree. Go with team strength. If we come out running the ball the first six times we have it, I’m throwing the remote and jumping out the basement window.

U$C screwed me with the Pic-6, what a crappy guesser.

JRB re: Kamara... I think I have discovered the source of his lack of focus. Check this Thursday's BGI Practice Report in reference to the soundtrack from practice:

---“That’s all we get is one song,” Duval Kamara asked McDonnell jokingly when “We Ready” by Pastor Troy (remix version by Archie Eversole) played next. I take it he’s not a classic rock kind of guy.---

Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer reference? BRILLIANT!

"Coach Latina, your blocking schemes confuse and frighten me. Sometimes the shrill screaming of your whistle makes me want to curl into a ball and cry. Sometimes when you yell at me about my technique I think you're being to hard on me and that maybe you're speaking a different language. I don't know! My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts. But there is one thing I do know - when a young man like me slips and falls during a run block, there is nobody to blame for my ineptitude but you, Coach Latina!"
- Unfrozen Caveman Offensive Lineman

....although I see many improvements over 2007 (receivers, safeties, outside linebackers)...I also see non-competitive tailbacks, fullbacks, offensive line run blocking, cornerbacks (especially cornerbacks), defensive line, tight ends and - dare I say it - a quarterback, that while uncannily accurate on the quick slant and "over-the-top" passes, cannot throw the "out", especially the deep out. He also fixes on one receiver, which will exacerbate his interception rate as the year progresses, and is not only slow...but plodding as was his qb coach...

...if we can't run the ball we can't win against a good team...luckily...we don't play many "good" teams in 2008...and we still might not reach 7-wins...

Not even through 3 and Indiana has almost 400 yards against a Michigan State defense that the Irish made look like the 86 Bears last week.

MSU in a dog-fight with Indiana!
OSU's OL just teed it up against U$C.

Big day for Kyle Rudolph today? I'd like to see that tight end pass down the middle work.

Kirk Herbstreit and Lee Corso predicted a Purdue victory today. I'm not surprised by Corso's pick, but you can tell that last week's loss made Kirk lose it with the Irish.

That said, I think they'll win today, 35-28.

Go Irish!

...now Indiana has 400+ yards against MSU...and NC just beat Miami...christ...

It's a friggen joke Jim. Uneffenbelievable, a quote from "A Fish Called Wanda."
Revenge! Ka, Ka, Ka, Ka, Ken.
Line play in football is beating the crapola out of the guy in front of you. Every play, this opposing guy is trying to violate you, yet ND plays it as a game of finesse. Amazing, how teams always either olay down befor and after the Irish. And ND seems to think, by it's play, that this is an exercise in gentlemanly conduct.
One more lost and I'm changing my affiliation to Manchester United.

I'm serving dessert and coffee at my house for today's game. We're going to pound cake it.

...halftime...how 'ya like Lambert now?...

Good thing I was wrong about the running game, at least for this game.
