They let Joe Schad on campus? 80 percent of ESPN personalities should receive the Cooper Rego Campus Ban.

Pat - Mo Richardson and John Ryan to DE, and Kerry Neal to LB.

Yep, I flipped Mo Richardson and Kallen Wade by mistake. Thanks.

Shouldn't that be "Coach Tuberville from Auburn"?

Yes it should. As you can all tell, I wrote this one in a hurry. Sorry for all the dumb mistakes.

Good to see Charlie has his seasons down pat, Pat. How is he traveling to the Middle East this fall, and in May?

At the very least, Charlie recognizes that lack of fundamentals was a huge problem. Let's hope the renewed emphasis on fundamentals pays dividends.

Somewhat related: I took a look the other day at the 2009 recruit lists. A lot of our competitors (I'd say "football aspirational peers," but then I'd have to gouge out my eyes) have locked up a number of top recruits. So far, ND is batting .000. Should we be concerned? USC, for example, had a bit of an off year last year in recruiting, but seems hell bent on making up for it this year.

Too early to worry too much about recruiting. Last year was an oddity in that we had most of our recruits locked up before the season even began. I can't think of a single time in recent memory that ND was able to do that. Plus, I think after last season a lot of recruits are gonna want to wait and see how we start out the year before committing, as they should to be honest.

It might be tougher to get recruits after last year's debacle. Who knows. I'm no Tom Lemming.

ESPN said Coach Weis isn't going to call the players any longer. How come? Wasn't he hired because he is smarter than everybody else?

He was hired to be the head coach, Binny, and in his mind these changes will make him a better head coach. I tend to agree with him but we'll have to wait and see I guess. My bet is that he will still have a major hand in scheming and calling plays, just not on an every-down basis during the game.

Who in their right mind gets married on Blue & Gold weekend?

Somebody help me out with what position is exempt from needing improvement in fundamentals, please? QB? No, not QB. RB? Nope. O Line? Hardly. Receivers? Um, they need work too. D Line? Since we have to figure out if we even have a D line, I guess maybe--you can't improve players' fundamentals if you don't have players. LB's? Nope. DB's? Nope. Punter? Maust can improve. Kicker? Please.

So did I miss someone? Do we have an all-American gatorade mixer hiding somewhere?

Nate, I was wondering the same thing. Charlie kind of mumbles his way through that one, changing thoughts not once but twice in mid-sentence. Perhaps it's the holder for field goals?

I also had trouble getting past the first paragraph of Charlie quotes. I am wracking my brain trying to figure out who/what is exempt from needing to improve. And the freaky part is that in his mind the answer is so utterly obvious that it doesn't even warrant his actual saying who the perfect player is. My guess (and hope) is that he simply misspoke while delivering the missstatement.

I'm not sure what Charlie meant either. My guess is that he meant to say "There's not one position exempt from that..." but I really don't know.

I realize it's only 5 seconds of an entire workout, but looking at that espn video, just as we hear about more physical practices we see a couple of guys running through a gauntlet of guys holding up pads to slow down the guy trying to run through. They can't be serious. My 4-year old grandson could run that gauntlet. Hopefully I'm just one of those blind men feeling the wrong part of the proverbial elephant.

with all due respect jim, i believe you are making a mountain out of a mole-hill. 1st practice of spring training, and a five second video clip. and you're questioning the strategy already?!
come on people, let's sit back and take a deep breath....

Jim your grandson must be awfully big and tough at 4 years old. You should try running through a gauntlet..

NCAA does not allow pads on first two days of spring practice. I'm sure all would like to hit. Being smacked with pads for the first two days was about all of the hitting they could do.

"Objectives going into the spring. The obvious objective that everyone could see is we need to improve fundamentally and technically across the board. There's one position that's exempt from that which is, you know, once again, not to be redundant but just stating the obvious.

Does anyone know what this means. Does it mean that the only position we did well last year was TE?

"Sam Young started at 309, dropped to 287 by the end of the year and he's at 330 right now."

287 to 330?!? I'm guessing the word "diet" never once entered Sam Young's mind, bot that I'm complaining. Let's hope the weight gain helps bring him back to the form that made him one of the top OTs coming out of high school.

you think John Ryan already had those injuries during the GT game? he was awful all year long. He's just not good.

I'm pretty sure his shoulder was hurting him back then. Tim Prister mentioned the shoulder brace he was wearing in an article back at the start of the year.

And as I said, the injuries just played a part. They weren't the only reason for his play.

Anonymous and Doug,

Did you look at the video? I have no problem with working up to hitting hard. But why not just run than make believe we're playing football by being tapped by a dozen guys. Two hand touch hits harder.

No my grandson isn't that big. Just a typical 4 year old and yes he could still run that gauntlet. Maybe even me, though picking up Terry Hanratty's towel was about all I was strong enough to do in my glory days.

I thought it was pretty clear CW said "Not one position is exempt from improving on fundamentals", implying that at 3-9 EVERYONE has work to do. I think there might be a typo somewhere.

The impressive thing about Sam Young's weight gain? If he loses the same amount during next season, by the end of his sophomore season he'll be 1 lb lighter than he was at the BEGINNING of his freshman season.

Jim, that video was just a very small portion of the practice, as was stated. If you watch the other videos out there (at Rivals, etc.), you'll see that there was a little more hitting going on than was shown in the ESPN clip. Not a lot (because, once again, NCAA rules prohibit it), but a little more.

Alls I'm sayin' is the juxtapostion of a statement re tougher practices with guys looking like they're playing paddycake was interesting. I'm sure the next reality will be better.

The point of that drill isn't to toughen up the players or get them used to being hit, it's just to get them to have proper technique when carrying the football.

Yeah, we are making a big deal out of a) a statement that might be either misspoken or mistyped, and b) a video clip of probably the "open" part of a practice that most of which we don't get to see. Nothing we say or do now (or in the future) will change what and how Charlie runs his program. Although it is nice to know that I'm not the only person who sees these things and feels as strongly as I do.

I like the idea of putting Wade at OLB. I always thought in a 3-4 he was just too tall and athletic to sit at DE, not to mention a little too light. He's a big, athletic guy, and at 6'5" 255 is perfect for OLB in a 3-4.

atepesm - that's what I'm chalking it up to. I didn't watch the presser, but I know from past transcripts that it sometimes takes a secret decoder ring to figure out what was actually said.

I have to agree with Jim. In one video (not sure if it's the one in the post, and I can't check to verify since I'm at work) there was a comment about increasing the "intensity" this year and yet the players in the video at the time looked utterly bored.

I get that they can't wear pads and the point of the paddycake drill isn't to get them used to hitting, but part of being "intense" and "nasty" is taking every second of practice seriously and having a chip on your shoulder about going 3-9 the year before and getting your ass kicked on national television week in and week out. You play like you practice, and if you practice standing around bored then that can translate onto the field. Travis Fryman (baseball player) told me at his camp that Practice does not make perfect. "PERFECT practice makes perfect."

I'll cut them a little slack because it's the first day, but let's show some pride and fire here Irish.

If you haven't seen this clip yet, check it out from Blue & Gold. You will see and hear Latina throughout most of it; there's even a little trash talking going on.

Maybe I've been in Southern California too long, but can we mellow out a little here on the first practice?!

I believe the quote mentioned relates to taking claussen to the ground. he is the only one who can't be taken down. For obvious reasons. Btw. How did we go from 4 qb's to 1?

Yeah, everybody should chill out about the first practice. You can't hit, and you can't really get a whole lot done. Coaches use it to get the players moving about and understanding what drills, etc. they will be doing for the Spring, and spend the rest of the time making sure everyone remembers all the coverages, packages, etc. Its boring, but its required by the NCAA specifically for the purpose of NOT going full bore on the first practice, as they think that would be bad for the kids.

Everybody just chill out.

It's still chilly where I'm at so chill out.

Okay, I'll accept it was a typo--haven't seen the video, so it's not worth getting up in arms over.

I WOULD like to say a personal thank you to Coach Weis, as a US service member overseas. That's awesome that he and other coaches are taking time to go over to Iraq. Hopefully he can meet with the ND Club of Baghdad--my classmate Suzanne Inzerillo (98) was the first president when she was there with the Embassy. Though I must say I appreciate the Yale coach going, but I'm not sure how many Ivy League grads he'll find there in uniform. Maybe in the Embassy.

wow, guess my computer dumped my info. That anonymous comment about the Iraq trip above is me.

Well, just checked the alumni club pages, and Iraq isn't listed anymore. so I guess it went bottom up. Hmm. Hopefully some ND grads/fans in Baghdad and points Middle East will see this and get in contact with him.

Kinnon Tatum!

What a great name, and a great hit. I was at that game and it really set the stadium abuzz.

Has anyone else checked out the clips from today's practice on rivals.com that they have listed under "Eye on Clause, eye on Tenuta"? (It is one of the free clips).

I don't know about anyone else - and I am sure such "encouragement" is used once the press must leave practice - but I LOVED what I heard out of Tenuta. All business and he doesn't seem to give a damn who is watching or listening, so long as the players do. I won't quote him here, but I feel like similar sentiments have been expressed on many fall afternoons throughout many living rooms these past few years.

And yes, this is only practice number two. And yes, they are not hitting anyone. But hey, maybe they will want to.

Nate,

A guy I work with (Yale grad '92, reserves) just got back from Iraq......trained Iraqi policemen north of Mosul. So there is at least one :>)

Irish hockey is headed to the Frozen Four after defeating MSU in the West regional final tonight!

Not much discussion anywhere of Luke Schmidt working with the Tight Ends. This kid was the #1 football HS player in Indiana as a tailback. When he commited to ND their was talk that Minter wanted him as a Linebacker but Luke wanted offense. With Yeatman out at least for the spring, we could certainly use another big, strong TE and Schmidt can also run after the catch. I think this kid still has a world of potential and would not be surprised to see him on the field in September, as a TE.

Duffman, I am in full agreement with you about Schmidt. Until Reuland walked off and Yeatman was susupended, it was my opinion that the TE position was potentially as strong as it has ever been. I do wish that the TE would become a more prominent offensive weapon, and not just a third tackle or intermediate route decoy while all passes are thrown deep. Under-utilization of the tight end has long been a pet peeve of mine. And with a struggling O line, the tight end should be a QB's best friend, as an emergency outlet if nothing else. Charlie has recruited some outstanding talent at that position, and I hope that they are allowed to fluorish in '08.

Underutilization of the TE? Our last two starters have been All-America TE candidates. I guess last year didn't have the production we had expected, but nothing at all last year went as we expected. I think TE will continue to be a major part of the ND offense for years to come. We just need the rest of the line to protect Clausen and Co. so that the TE is free to run routes instead of being forced to stay in on max protection.

Mikes1160--

I went through ROTC summer training with a guy from Yale, so I know they're out there--just wouldn't expect any Yale alumni clubs there or anything :) In 10 years in the Army, I've met a grand total of 2 Ivy Leaguers (including that guy). To put that in perspective for you, my small little camp of 800 people in middle of nowhere, Korea had 3 Domers out of a group of maybe 40 officers.
