Soccer is NOT an American term. It's actually an English term, and it was invented by the Rugby fraternity in order to make the claim that their game RUGBY was the real football, and that soccer was some sort of lesser game. The term came from shortening Association Football [the then name for the soccer/football league] to soccer.
And the use of Football will depend on who you are talking to. I know plenty of Rugby players who call either League or Union [two different sorts of Rugby], fooball ... while Union players just call League players mongrels! lol
And YES, it is a Bass NOT a Bass Guitar. Kudos to Diablo ... though he could have explained it in nicer terms and without the look. 
The Electric Bass was invented by Leo Fender, and was a Double Bass turned on it's side in order to allow it to be held similar to a guitar. Still, the instrument is just a Double Bass electricfied ... which is why it's a bass and not a bass guitar. Good to see Diablo has respect for hs instrument. 
[Yes, I was once a bass player in a studio! And yes, I tell people off for calling it a bass guitar as well. I'm also tired of hearing people say 'Koala Bear' it's a FRIGGIN' KOALA! lol]
