I'm not sure as of now what Elliot Spitzer's p.o.v. was at the time but we maybe talking from two diffrent viewpoints. Clinton's gun mandates were extremely popular with the police unions all over the place in New York especially in the city(N.Y.C.). The Police's stance was less guns in the hands of perps means less dead them(the police) as they enforce the laws of the land. Have'nt you noticed the unfortunate incidents in the NYC area involving police shootings.
Simply put is that some do not have the luxury of just prosecuting gun offenders. In some parts of the country you really want to keep guns from indivduals who will shoot other people with them.

I hate guns, but defend the second amendment's right for citizen's to keep and bear arms. However, irresponsible owners who allow children or others to get their hands on guns and allow for an "accident" to happens should be fully and aggressively prosecuted as if they performed a murder or assult themselves.

Sorry, but this statement just isn't true. Poll after poll shows that the great majority of rank and file police officers support civilian gun ownership, including concealed carry.
As for as police support, it was only the International Organization of Chiefs of Police who supported Bill Clinton's gun control policies as exemplified by the Assault Weapons ban.
I am a retired police officer with over 25 years of law enforcement background. I am a gun owner and avid shooter. I have two young boys who share my joy and enthusiasm for the shooting and hunting sports. Since day one I have taught my sons proper gun safety and use, as well as lengthy conversations about the use of deadly force. Just this year I had the pleasure of taking each of my boys deer hunting for the first time. As the boys successfully, shot, processed and removed their game from the field it opened the door for deep meaningful conversations about guns, hunting, life & death, gun safety and the results of our actions when we pull the trigger. Those hunting trips taught my boys more about the sanctity of life then any ethics class in school could have. To remove our right to have had that experience would be wrong.
As a police officer I encountered the good and bad side of firearms possession and use on a regular basis. With every negative incident, to include the loss of fellow officers, I was reminded that the gun was not responsible for the wrong, but rather the individual who wielded the gun.
Am I pro-gun - YES. Do I believe in stronger prosecution of offenders utilizing firearms in the commission of a crime - YES. Would I support a cannidate who shared those views - YES

I do want to point out the Second Amendment is not about hunting but about freedom. The people at that time had been bullied by governments in Europe. Consider the millions murdered in Sudan and other African countries. If 30% of the homes had guns then this simply would not happen. It is actually not only the right but the responsibility of those who know how to use a gun to own one because the next Hitler is always only one crazy fanatic and fear mongering away. Some might argue that a government who takes over two other countries without declaring war and changes the reasons for doing so at least three times is acting a bit like an out-of-control leader; but even Hitler took well over a decade to come to power. Likewise, the crisis in Sudan has been brewing for many, many years or even decades.
