Gravatar What a horrible and evil person this must be! An exit stategy? We don't need no stinkin' exit strategy! Iraq the 51st state!

Gravatar I heard one commentator make a good point after the President's speech. She said (as best as I can recall), "Our troops were sent there in the first place over the 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' issue. Now it's about establishing a democracy.

So I did a little bit of research and found out that our country wasn't even intended to be a democracy but a republic according to Article 4 Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution.

Also, that's what it says in our pledge of allegiance to the flag! ("...the republic for which it stands"). Democracy actually means "mob rule".

A World Net Daily article listed some good quotes that some of the founding father's gave about what a democracy is:

James Madison, Federalist Paper No. 10: In a pure democracy, "there is nothing to check the inducement to sacrifice the weaker party or the obnoxious individual."

At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, Edmund Randolph said, " ... that in tracing these evils to their origin every man had found it in the turbulence and follies of democracy."

John Adams said, "Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There was never a democracy yet that did not commit suicide."

Okay, so we're not really supposed to be a democracy ourselves, yet we are supposed to make sure that one is established over there in Iraq?

Gravatar Freedfromevil: I like you more and more. We disagree on a lot, but you make some good points!

It was also Madison who said, during the Constitutional Convention, that the aim of the new government should be to "protect the minority of the opulent from the majority" that is to protect the privledged classes from the rest of us heathens! Democracy? Nor hardly.

Which leads to the interesting question: Can you export something you don't have? I don't think so.

Gravatar I can hear Bush now, talking in his sleep, practicing his next speech...can you hear him too?

"Stay the course, man.

When nothing is working and the costs are enormous and people are dying and the nation's prestige in the world is getting hammered -- that is no time to re-think your strategy!

Just because you made a mistake about WMD that didn't actually exist, and just because there really is no evidence at all that Saddam was in cahoots with Al Qaeda (remember them?), and just because Rummy didn't exactly have a plan for the occupation, doesn't mean you re-think your strategy. No way! Plan or no plan, we're not going to hesitate one bit.

What you gotta do is hunker down and stick to the plan...er, stay the course.

It may take a long long time, and it might never work, and lots of people will suffer and die, but thinking about your strategy just sends the wrong message to the country, to the troops, and to the terrorists.

So even if this whole war was a mistake, and even if we screwed it up, and even if we have no real plan to change the situation, let's just keep to the course and ride this thing out. Maybe we'll get lucky or somethin'.

Oh -- and by the way -- would you please encourage your kids to join the military. We used up the folks we had, and we need some fresh blood...er, faces.

Okay?"
