If memory serves, there was a time, when I was a kid in the 70s and early 80s, when American journalists actually went to dangerous places and put themselves in harms way while getting the story.
Now they just hire the job out to the local enemy combatants.

Apparently they did question it. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that he was under surveillance and lead our boys right to the cache. Classic anti-insurgency tactic.
