I'd say it was Anderson Cooper pouring anger into his reports in the Katrina aftermath; an emotional release that was picked up by other reporters. They finally found their voices after so many years of letting the subject (especially the government) take the lead and control the tone (and sometimes even the content) of news reports.

The actual footage from Katrina's aftermath, and that of Rita, and the tsunami earlier in the year added up to TV coverage you couldn't find with as much emotional power in scripted shows.
