Have you tried calling City Public Works? If it's like San Diego, they're always trying to get rid of mulch. They'll even deliver it sometimes

That's a good idea.
We got some of the branches to weave the raised beds from a city crew that was clearing branches from the electrical lines out in front. The woodchip and mulch sources that are part of the local resource loop right now are private firms (arborists and such) and they are happy to let you know what the source material is.
Oakland's greenwaste goes into a commercial hot compost system. I'd simply assumed that most of the Public Works vegetation went into that.

These raised beds using willow branches are very unusual. I'd love to see them. I also tried burying rotted wood for a bed of potatoes and it seemed to work quite well. Glad you're back posting. I had to go back to Thailand to get my mojo back.

Root vegies are especially well-suited to the rotting wood raised bed. And yes, I'm glad to be back posting, too. It seemed pretty touch-and-go there, for a while.
I'm really glad to know you are taking care of yourself. There are so many of us who are just run too thin. Perhaps you could come over and spend some restorative time under the willow. It's an easy BART trip.
