Andrew Sullivan's opinion that religion tries to control the state is not something new. It may show signs of being reserected though, and successfully at that.

What was not mentioned is how political parties (sometimes one and the same as the state) will use the religion to obtain power. George W. Bush is a perfect example of this. An American citizen with the most perfect record of behavior and political savvy could not possibly become president of the U.S. That is probably also true of Canada. State separate from religion? Baloney! How would we ever have a good old fashioned war again if that became the norm?
