Gravatar Cathleen: This is a poignant and beautifully written piece. You have hit the nail on the head and you are so right about this municipal government.

The Tree Bylaw we have is not really a tree bylaw as has been advocated for by environmentalists in this community for many years now. Instead it is a tack-on to an existing develoment bylaw.

I supported it at the time because it was better than having nothing but it is still a long way from an ideal situation. It is sad that at the first test of this "tack-on" bylaw, the council feels that the rules don't apply to the township as it would make more work for them.

Government is only as good as the rules it makes.

I hope you will seriously consider running for Council in the next municipal election. We need passionate, thinking, and dedicated people like you who aren't afraid to speak out against the cushy status quo and to question how useful some rules are.

No doubt the boys will all point to their "Sustainability Charter" to show how environmentally sensitive and friendly they are but if the Charter is just a piece of paper and if there is nothing left of Willoughby to protect, then how useful has this costly exercise been?

Please run for Council in 2008.

Gravatar Outstanding summary & piece Cathleen. But fear not there are lots that read your eloquent commentary. My hope is they do understand and use that understanding well in Nov 2008 and also tell their neighbours to do so as well.

The sad thing is the antagonists that comment herein will probably remain mumb and numb. But if there are any comments which I doubt, those that do comment will spill irrational misdirecting venom and those that are left that have displayed some intelligence in the past will probably try to refer to some minute technical discrepancy about voting records or some such ridiculous details without regard to the real underlying global issues.

Truth, Inclusiveness, Honesty, Integrity, Vision and Caring.

Sadly these are not the values reflected by the single mindedness of the present groupthink boys club on Township council.

Gravatar The irony is that these same councilors look like they are going ga-ga over a proposed botanical garden. Greenies they are not! It looks more like they are looking for an annex to the 6 million dollar blob of cement!

This could be a very meaningful project area for our own LEPS organization. They, along with a number of willing vulunteers could really make something out of that land and creek combination.
