This is not the first PC Government to have problems selecting members of their cabinet from Quebec MPs. The party has often had problems there because of Liberal domination, and more recently with the BQ. With a limited number of elected PC MPs, and the usual need to pander to Quebec's demand for cabinet representation, it's easy to see Harper's problem. Even Mulroney had his embarrasing moments with his Quebec Ministries.

There is also the more universal problem that politicians often develop. It's called omnipotence, and it seems to intensify the longer they are in office. With some politicians, when that attitude grows in strength, the wiring of the brain and it's conection to organs in the lower extremities can stimulate an over abundance of synapse activity.
Some people can simplfy this condition by selecting from a host of better descriptions. I just can't think of one at the moment.

Gravatar Oh Kim! It really is sad isn't it. You would have been so much better at MP, MLA, and maybe even Mayor. If only the party could appoint candidates and stop letting democracy get in the way of good government. Like you I hate it when the people speak with one voice against what you and I know is best for them.

Maybe that mysterious woman, who would have been so much better than our MP, could explain why she is now in another constituency seeking to advance her political career.

You have hit a new low in this rant Kim. Usually there is only one person to blame for a failed political campaign. You have managed to blame everyone but the one responsible. (the losing candidate)

Gravatar Wow....hit a funny bone didn't I Servant? The truth hurts Servant? Kim Richter by the way is away and this Editor wrote the posting that riled you up, but when you rant like you just did then I just know my comments rang true. Face it Servant, there are too many nice people (and not so nice people too) in elected office that have no pertinent background or even the smarts to serve us best. Conservative Bernier is a shining example.

Corporations & business on the other hand try to hire, promote and advance the brightest and the best with the most smarts. The cream of the crop. Then there are the Conservatives who promote ministers like Bernier! Too bad that doesn't happen in the political world especially in the conservative party which is awash in back bench incompetents to say the least.

As hard as it may be for you Servant, face it your MP will never become a cabinet minister. Your right on one point though YOUR conservatives should "stop letting democracy get in the way of good government". If your conservatives would only open up Langley riding with DEMOCRACY in allowing challengers to take on the incumbent maybe democracy would have an even chance then Servant! Heck we might even have a democratic race with gosh maybe even cabinet material! Why don't you address this one oh wise one?

And really you have to admit that there is not a good inventory of solid quality lumber on the conservative's backbench is there?

Gravatar Why can't the opposition parties in Langley put a passionate, fire-brand charismatic (Tommy Douglas type) politician on the ballot instead of bland and uninspiring candidates?

Gravatar Well there you have it folfs. LFP's editor thinks his method of choosing a candidate to serve as MP is better than the Democratic method. I do remember the meeting we had for the CPC years ago and there seemed to be 6 candidates. The winner whom I was not supporting then became the MP. He has some shortcomings to be sure but he won. No sour grapes, no would have could have should have. Just rally round and get on with it. Your lamenting a loss from years ago leads only to chagrine and depression. Get on with it.

Having spent some time grading lumber I would say most politicians in Ottawa would be rated as "Standard and Better" They do understand the concept of "Serving" as an MP.

Gravatar WARNING - Don't ever buy lumber from Servant. You won't get the advertised quality. Not even close.

And Boomer my point is that the political party system, especially the HARPER Conservatives, & often the complicit media "systems" seem to promote mediocrity at best and incompetence as the present norm in our politicians (AKA - Maxime Bernier of the Conservatives) and our local Council, MLAs & MPs.

Why can't they be more busisness like and promote/choose premier people with premier minds and motives. Look no further than at today's langley advance letter to the Editor from a Mr. Lee Lockwood at this following link for more validation of my point as it pertains to even Township politicians;

http://www.canada.com/langleyadv...75- a772d5ecad2e

Lee even says in his letter;

"we must have members who would be in a position to contribute substantially more to solving current and future challenges in Langley than the current CEO and some of the board of directors(refers to mayor & council)."

He in fact goes further and recommends that more women may be desirable as an alternative to the Township council "Good Ole boys Club" inbreeding!

Gravatar The closestr best politician in the Langley's from the fire-brand charisma point of view is Rich Coleman. But as a former socred BC Premier proved "charisma without substance" is a dangerous proposition.

I agree that we need more inteligent, articulate and especially savvy/smart representatives than we presently have. Councillor Richter as a University business teacher is a proven articulate and truly independent thinking politician. We could certainly use more female clones.

Gravatar SUBSTANCE - Is the keyword here and you don't have to look to far to find this lacking in droves at all levels of political representatives especially in the Langleys, the Conservatice caucus and in all levels of Canadian politics for that matter. Anon's choice of the word Substance, is dead on!

Maybe the media could help out the electorate even more so in clearly pointing out the driftwood and incompetents! Maybe the political parties could set their standards higher, especially the Conservatives.

Somehow Servant I just can't see Richter if she was an MLA or MP spend taxpayer dollars on weekly useless self serving ads in the local rags that just basically say, " HEY remember ME, look at me, I'm still here and I care!". Pathetic!

These freaking ads more than annoy me and prove that these politicians that spend gobs of our money on them fly so low under the political radar and must make we wonder about their intelligence and real motivation on the comparitive RICHTER scale? LOL!

Gravatar Ask anyone who lost thousands upon thousands of dollars on Income Trusts what THEY think of Harper and his sanctimonious pretenses. These jokers broke a solemn promise when seeking election to leave Income Trusts alone. After being elected they offered a simple apology for this act, and showed not even a trace of remorse in my opinion.
Is A bald faced liar no different to these annal orifuces?

Our local robot MP said nothing as he observed this whole procedure while retaining HIS sanctimonious best profile. Don't you just love these guys who don't have the guts to stand up to a boss who blatantly deceives?

Gravatar The sad thing thing Methinks is that it especially hurt those on investment fixed incomes, seniors. Just as this Township Good Ole boy's Club council slate is screwing this same group again with essentially doubling of our annual municipal property taxes while they get themselves blackberries and build cost overun after cost overun Taj Mahals. Wonder if these boys liked Nero fiddling over Romes flames? Are they practising their little mini-fiddlers' instruments too?

Gravatar LFP, I am both a senior and live off of a fixed income. Your comment nailed the situation exactly. Many older folks have had to get back to work because of this treacherous act by Harper's Conservatives. The worst part of the whole foolish act by Flaherty and his boss, is the fact that there was no need for it. 40 billion dollars was lost by pensioners and pension funds in less than a week!

Gravatar I noticed a little slight of hand in the Langley Township Water Management Plan. It claims that it would cost $40,000 plus the cost of a service connection to connect piped water to rural properties. Big dollar numbers like that will easily sway a person if they do not stop and think for a moment. The point is that rural township properties are on their own private wells, and these wells will continue to work fine if the township stops pumping water from underneath them to supply the urban areas.

So why even mention these enormous connection costs? They have no bearing on reality, because wherever township well water is distributed, the piping network is already established. A used car salesman might be expected to slip this one by, but the township...?

Incidentally, the latest Township Water Management plan is once again a disaster waiting to happen IMO. Look for details, hard datelines, firm dollar costs, an actual layout of how and where GVRD water will be phased in. They're very sketchy at best. This information is vital if we are to believe that in 10 years the township will reduce its reliance on municipal WELL WATER by 30%. Yes indeed folks, and pigs will fly at about that same time.

Why am I so negative you may ask. The answer is simple. Because 15 to 20 years from now, a failure of our groundwater dependant water supply would be a catastrophy to both the urban and agricultural sectors of our township. That risk is far too great, to rely on the vagaries of phase 2 of the Water Management plan as it stands at present. The costs to remedy that situation when it is realised years from now, will be at a level far above what it would cost today to supply GVRD water to our urban areas. We simply cannot afford to rely on a plan that has a downside that could send our tax dollars into orbit, and very possibly put an end to viable agriculture activity in our community.

We presently have 2 provincial ministries "Cooperating" on this plan (well I think we do?!). For goodness sake lets move off of the knife's edge, and do like abbotsford did when they piped in water from the North Shore years ago. Sure it'll be costly today, but our "Cooperating" partners in a very iffy venture like this should have the wisdom to see that it's better to pay now and help out while they can afford it, rather than have us live on the edge of possiply a great hardship.

There is something ironically prophetic in the adage on page 3 of the introduction to the Water Management Plan. Perhaps it reflects the inner doubts of the plan's creaters. It says:

" THE FROG DOES NOT DRINK UP THE POND IN WHICH HE LIVES" (American Indian saying)

The township should locate this wise old Indian and hire him.
