Gravatar 3, 4 or 5 super regional school boards just like the BC health care regions makes emminent sense (consolidates buying power & costs) and then school SPCs made up with representative parents is the way to go Susan. The writing is clearly on the wall! What real value do School Trustees really add? Most of them don't even have school age kids any more and are out of touch with the parents and students!

Gravatar If you think School Trustees are out of touch what do you think a regional board would be? A regional board might not have anyone from langley on it or maybe just one person from langley, they wouldn't know langley or the parent or students.

Gravatar I don't think it is necessarily good for a School Board to be too parochial.

Gravatar SS’s claims that the Boards may be on there way out has much merit. On the other hand, Provincial governments have a history of utilizing local governments to do their dirty work. Closing schools is an excellent example. By funding the education system as they do, the Province has forced the School Districts into closing schools, but it is the School Boards around the Province taking the bad press.

Of course the Province could oust the Boards after all the dirty work of closing schools is done and before the next Provincial election, making themselves the white knight riding in to save the education system. Am I being too cynical believing the Provincial Liberals would make such a political maneuver at the expense of our children’s education?

Gravatar Funding school districts the way they do now makes far more sense than how the province used to do it. There are still school districts that have schools with populatoins under 50 students scattered throughout their district. Granted some of these are necessary due to geographic considerations, but not when they are within a few miles of each other. Now these districts will have to be fiscally responsible and understand that empty buildings are expensive and that BC taxpayers, not just those in their district, shouldn't have to pay for this mismanagement.

Rural education is going to change. Distance or distributed education will be the norm. The province is also working with districts to help facilitate the "one classroom" school again. Yes, it's back to the one room (multi-age) schoolhouse for some districts.

Gravatar Back From Holidays! See ya all tommorrow for my views on news! What's new in Langley? Township still tax ,borrowing and spending? I hear that Translink is inches from death courtesy of Prov Libs. So in the past two years what has our translink Director (Mayor Kurtt Alberts) gotten us in Langley Township. Answer...0. Obviously he's no City Mayor Grinnell who got loads for the city including the ridiculously ugly and wrongly located overpass! But she got it! He didn't get anything.
