The chance that the entire staff will be allowed to move en mass to Shortread is nil. The LTA works on seniority for new openings but since most of the Shortread teachers will have continuing status then they cannot be bumped in that manner. The Aldergrove teachers (if they have the seniority) will have first pick of any new jobs at Shortread but they won’t be able to bump full-time continuing teachers from their jobs very easily.
I’m not sure why renaming schools would promote unity, just as I am unsure what is meant by “converging communities”. Most catchment lines are drawn in a way that split natural communities (one side of road here another there) and really aren’t we all part of the larger community? I am sure, however, that renaming a school will cost substantially more than naming a playing field. If all you were doing is changing the name on the front door then $5,000 may cover it (although the cost of a new street sign and repainting would probably blow well past $5000) but when you rename a school you have to consider all the ancillaries (the interior locations, the letter-head, board office info etc..). If anyone is worried about saving money for students then renaming a school should be right at the bottom of the list.
As for use of cell phones in schools that should be a non-starter. We already have studies indicating that children under the age of 15 should have limited access to cell phones for health reasons (their thinner skulls provide insufficient protection from radio waves) but even more importantly, cell phones are an incredible distraction in the class. How anyone can bring personal rights into this I do not know. There is no personal right in any human rights code to a cell phone. The current policy that says that children may possess cell phones but that they must be turned off during school hours seems pretty sensible to me. It takes a major potential distraction out of the picture and deals with all the privacy issues (cell phones with cameras etc..) in one fell swoop.

FYI, there is no current policy. That is the point.
There may be school rules but they are not the same in each school and I would argue that they shouldn't be.

Gee Blair, then most of Langley Politicians should not have cell phones either. They have even thinner skulls because they don't have any brains to protect at all!

LFP,
Actually if they had no brains then the thickness of their skulls wouldn't matter since the radio waves would have nothing to interact with.

Thanks Blair for once again providing an insigthful and worthy reflection on the comments posted. Wow, editor, that is a pretty low blow on the cell phone issue.....does that include your favourite councillor too? I know folks have been banned from blog sites like this for personal attacks and this has to be considered exactly that!

Sad to say Rennie, but the editor is right. It could be argued perhaps, that the phone caused the damage? And what did you have in mind?....ban the editor from the site?
