Manley's Afghan report essentially proves to this Editor that he was chosen by Harper because he clearly sided with the Harperetic view on continuing the Afghan war. See this blog link posting below to see that he essentially was predisposed to continue the war over 3 months ago.

Was this simply all a set up? Makes this Editor really wonder!

LFP,
One of the members of the Manley panel has an interesting question for you in today's Globe:
"To the critics who say fundamentally that we should not be in Afghanistan, I ask the following question: If we are not willing to commit our military resources when asked to do so by the United Nations, for a mission co-ordinated by NATO, in a country whose democratically elected government wants us and whose citizens desperately need us, then precisely where and when would Canada be prepared to do so?"
Just wondering myself?

Blair, Canada in my opinion should NOT be in a combat role there especially after so many years with realistically no end in sight for many, many more years. if ever! What is winning, success and an end? Is there realistically any? I think the odds are staked against us based on other similar historical tragedies.
You forget that the democratic government was imposed on Afghanistan with the drug warlords comfortably in power now and I still wonder outloud as very many do if you can ever successfully impose democracy on these kind of backword countries. i think not. Especially histiorically warring and scarred countries like Afghanistan.
Try modifiyng a south american/african/ micronesian lost tribe's table etiquette manners, beliefs and behaviors! It takes literally generations , not simple years! Many would even argue that even aboriginals in much of this world have not even completely nor successfully integrated into our type of democracy and culture even after hundreds of years! Look to these countries urban 'east end' equivalents and also look at the latent anger and horrible suicide/demographic statistics.
Change, democracy and human rights can only come (tragically I admit) extremely slowly and on their time schedule. Not ours. Especially when encouraged, rewarded and financially assisted by the wealthy western countries. Name me a similar country in history where forced and imposed democracy and H.R. ever triumpfed.
In the mean time wasted Canadian lives of our young, also lives of their citizens (including women & children) and the loss of respect, money and other opportunities, lost especially when these could better help other more willing and perhaps even more desperate countries.
Just as Britain tried to negotiate a peace in Afgjanistan so should we all with the best possible conditions we can get that are palatable and will lead to a better peace potential for this seemingly timeless, warlike and warlord feudal country. There is no other solution in my opinion.
