The new jobless numbers are out and B.C. took the biggest hit in the country in March, with 22,600 jobs eliminated. Nationally, 61-thousand jobs were lost in March and the national unemployment rate rose to 8 per-cent from 7.7.
Well done Town council I hope you enjoy your supper while others go hungry. Anyone been to the Social Services office lately maybe it is time that some of you visit. Especially when you are supporting the 5% tax increase in taxes. Ever think of the retired pensioners that are on fixed incomes? Why are they so intent to develop to increase there tax base? This planned development is still so expensive that people can not afford it.
You are sitting on the hill but soon the rain will wash you down where you belong.
When you lose your income next election you will begin to understand want a 5% land tax increase means to the people.

That article in the Langley Times (above link)is unreal. I don't understand how that sort of distorted story telling lacks any real description of what's really going on at Township Hall. The information that is missing from the piece, is a perfect example of the bias that stiil exists at this newspaper. What a shame that this paper cannot investigate more of the facts and background, so that readers could understand how they are being screwed by a few councilors that have no understanding of economics.

How about I just forward my taxes for you to pay Beckett, you seem pretty flush there and I'm not.
It's a combination of all the cents and dollars that make a big difference.

Becket is just pulling our chain. Giving in to the parasites on this TOL council is absolutely the wrong attitude. In due time they will all get their comeuppance. The previous Mayor got his. The fact that they can't see their eventual fate in what happened to the previous Mayor, shows how dumb they must be.

Just saying.....I bet you folks spend plenty more than $1.09 a week at the Otter Co-op on trivial things, not necessities. Relax we have the lowest tax payments in the Lower Mainland. Vancouver had a 7.8% tax increase with the Property Endowment Fund and a Casino! Their 7.8% ( in real dollars) is away above our $64 increase!

Basic fincancial information for the fiscally/economically uninformed:
"The Rule of 72". If you want to know how many years it takes double principal/payout of any rate of return/growth. REMEMBER THIS PLEASE: Divide the rate (in the case of TOL taxes - 5%)into 72. Thus a 5% rate of increase in TOL taxes will double the amount paid in 14-15 years.
How many of these annual increases have we had? How long will this go on?
Wakey, wakey! Municipaln taxes & services are not the only demand on the purse of the taxpayer (or milk-cow as we are known in rural Langley).
Despite the wish of politicians & TOL staff to avoid difficult financial decisions...These are not going to go away. In fact (see above) at some point they will double.
Happy Bunnies & chocolate - as a belief-neutral seasonal greeting.

Here we go again. Beck's comparing our tax increases with the higher ones, trying to justify.
Why don't you compare our taxes with the lowest, then ours would be high.

Becket, I suppose that you are in favor of general inflation also. Your logic has no place among people who have been on a fixed income for 10 or more years. TOL is not Vancouver......plain and simple, and
there are cities that have had no tax increases this year.

Few Brad, few indeed, in fact in a dollar based world queenie we are close to the bottom. Our mill rate is very low - or is that too much to undertsand in one tax lesson!

For the financially/economically uninformed: The mil rate (note the spelling) is used to multiply the Assessed Value of real property to generate the tax revenue needed by a municipality. It is adjusted annually. Thus a low mil rate may reflect high assessed value (remember the real estate boom?) rather than low taxes. The bottom line is the annual revenue collected to run the municipal services, which goes up & down based on POLITICAL decisions, among other factors.
Hey...another topic. Perhaps the council could find the money from their 5% increase to take a trip to Missisauga ON to take some lessons:

Great story. A humble bow to the mayor, please. Rick Mercer show had her on this week.
PS...would you like to read about assesed values of real property next?

Before you start belittling individuals Beck, you might stop to think what their credentials are.
I'd put my economics knowledge and experience over yours anyday.

Becket is no more than a follower. It makes absolutely no sense to justify raising taxes because others have done it. A little imagination is beyond his scope of thinking. Too many like him I'm afraid.
