I once attempted a turtle rescue...I went to grab the shell and discovered--rather quickly--that it was a snapping turtle. Luckily, I was still young and speedy. I got a towel out of my trunk and tossed it over Captain Snappypants and dragged his ungrateful butt off the road.
We rescued one from the road in front of our house one time. It was huge. The shell was about 10" in diameter. It, too, was a snapping turtle with very long claws. Frank ended up getting the pitchfork to get under him and lift him into the children's wagon. Then hauled the wagon to the neighbor's rather-large pond.
