Funny how it is that once we've 'developed' a place and got it just the way we like it, we then visit a place like the one we started with and realise we liked it better the way it was!
I think the top pic is Time Square, but of course, we've gone and 'developed' the 'square' out of it... So maybe it's Time Whatchamacallit Thingie Sorta.

Actually more Disney Meets Theme Mall Square these days. Not much New York left - lots of big chains - your restaurant choices run more to Chili's and Olive Garden than anything uniquely New Yorky.
However it puts the tourists in a happy spendy mood, so that's good. And it IS an improvement over the old yuckiness. I only took that picture because I was heading for the subway station there. The fact that that's a viable option at ten o'clock at night, particularly with a giant bag of kayaking gear in tow, actually speaks more about improvement than I can begin to address in a comment.
But it did feel really bizarre schlepping my stuff through all the noise & lights after a few days where the excitement was all wind & waves & weather - not artificial.

I work in one of the Times Square buildings in your picture. I feel that same way every morning and all I do is come up from 14th Street!
