I told you I saw him on CNN, and I could hear the pain and frustration in his voice. I think he'd had enough. He'd had enough of sitting there, day after day, of seeing Young Black Men come into his court as grist for the Prison Industrial Complex.
There's nothing conspiratorial about what the man did. He was family talking to family. He didn't want to mince words. He wanted them to HEAR him, like they would a grandfather, uncle, Village Elder.
There was nothing but love behind the man's frustration. Do you realize how difficult a road he probably had to travel to become a judge, considering his age? He's getting to the point where he doesn't care what people think about what he says..
He's a lot like my late aunt who used to say:
" I have to say something, or the rocks will cry out."

I understand his intention, but not necessarily his methods. He's a smart enough man to know that he could lecture them all day and it means nothing. They need their fathers to do it from the beginning. I wonder how many of those 50 black men had one.

Marvin Arrington is already a member of the elite, highly cliquish "100 Black Men" (the Atlanta chapter - don't ask to get in we are going to choose who can get in)
He already knows the proper channels of how to talk to these young people. It was indeed highly inappropriate for him to do this under the auspices of his JUDGESHIP.
With all of the technicalities that are thrown up regarding judicial malfeasance Arrington should be gathered these people together for a talk "off the clock".
He could easily ask the Fulton County Sheriff to bring every single one of these Black folks that he needed to talk to to his chambers or into a conference room for a discussion.
I have a problem with him sitting in the seat of the judge in the courtroom and doing what he did.

This so-called "Bill Cosby" method is overrated.
1. Who dosen't lecture to knuckleheads in our community? We've been doing it for years.
2. I'm tired of this "airing out dirty laundry" B.S. like we have to act shamed in front of white folk every time we mess up.
Whites do far worse to affect society as a whole than a few knucklehead negros ever will.

Lee's number one is true but that truth will be ignored.
In the Baltimore area, a judge did the same thing. A well known defense attorney did the same thing in radio commercials on hip hop stations in Baltimore. A local funeral home did the same thing in Baltimore. The result?
The same ole same ole.
I understand his frustrations, but just talking won't do it. Only one on one intervention will do it. But every time I say that, I'm either ignored or attacked.

Simple fix: reverse the policies that caused the mess. Make single mothers (and single fathers) no longer eligible for welfare. The only ones available for welfare should be married couples, with or without children. Maybe grandfather in current single mothers, but make it clear that if you are going to become a single parent, you are on your own. It took decades for welfare policies to devestate the inner city marriage culture, it won't be fixed overnight.
Change divorce law so that in no-fault divorce cases, the one requesting divorce gets a much smaller slice of the jointly owned pie, and by default child custody goes to the spouse who did not request divorce.
Dramatically reduce child support payments.
It's pretty obvious from my recommended policy changes that I think the big culprit is the breakdown of the family.

elb,
"Uptown.....you have the floor."
I'm not sure what you meant by this but I believe Judge Arrington's heart is in the right place.
He pulled these youths aside and tried to TALK to them man to man.
It wasn't a "Cosby" moment because he didn't dehumanize them in the media for the pleasure of people who've never had the best interests of black folks in mind.

Angie,
"They need their fathers to do it from the beginning. I wonder how many of those 50 black men had one."
Their fathers are probably older versions of themselves.
And their mothers are no role models either.
How can you teach your child something you don't know yourself?
In the ghetto we are going on 3 generations of un-parented, unaccountable children making children.
The simplistic ranting about black men abandoning families is not dealing with the real problem.
The entire concept of family has been subverted in the hood.
Young girls often feel that giving birth is a right of passage that confirms their "womanhood".
Young boys are just out there looking for sex and not thinking beyond that.
Children are born, live in that environment for 16 years and the process starts all over again because the conditions are the same.
These people are not going to magically become responsible with a "Just Do It" speech.

just what was the purpose or outcome that this 'successful & elite' negro judge was after...
according to him on one of the news shows...
these convicted 'vile, deranged & criminally-insane' black 'predator terrorists' were justily being sent away for a long, long time...
should not elite negroes spend their time enriching the lives of 'mature stable young men/women' who are adding very positively to the world...
instead of of justing p!ss!ng in the wind to these low-life black n!gga thugs...
These people are not going to magically become responsible with a "Just Do It" speech.
Dear Jesus:
Please help this boy.
Steve:
I didn't need to quote the entirety of your rant above to make my case. It is interesting that - absent a clear Republican or Black conservative to blame for the situation you are at least willing to talk about the pathologies that are present in these communities.
You then take the position that "Just Say No"/ "Just Do It" speeches are not enough. I agree with you on this limited point.
It is when we get into the day to day details of the issue where you show yourself to be an ENABLER of this very situation. From your rant I heard the following bottom line points:
1) Don't have a child when your situation is less than optimal as you are likely to perpetuate the cycle
2) Role modeling is important because it IMPRINTS certain thoughts and NORMALIZES certain behaviors that a NEGATIVE influence can do equally well
3) Sexual Conquest for males needs something more than "government condoms" to solve. These boys need to be operating within a certain ORDER or ARRANGEMENT within their lives or this instinctive behavior by the male of the race will actually become DESTRUCTIVE
4) The Family Structure, as Barack Obama noted, has been harmed by the POLICIES that have been hoisted upon certain Black families.
Steve - I am not going to take this time to point the finger at you and your ideological soulmates in the BQPFRC clan. I will ask that you REFORMAT your future reactions when a similar set of circumstances are presented to you and you have to support one set of POLICY INITIATIVES or the other. You have all but admitted that what has been thrown their way HAS FAILED. I would hope that the concept of "trying harder to achieve different results" is not the M.O. of the future.
Most importantly, Steve and other BQPFRCs - I must ask WHAT PART DOES THE BLACK WHO IS INFECTED WITH 'CONDITIONED HOPELESSNESS' PLAY IN THEIR OWN SALVATION - in YOUR version of the correction?
Is this salvation going to come from some liquid poured down from high (ie: Capitol Hill) to wash away all of the crust from the skin of these people?
Where does the BUY IN of the people come into play? Why isn't this the central focus?
I must challenge you to say unequivocally that YOU BELIEVE THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE EQUAL TO YOU IN ALL WAYS - from birth out of the womb. Thus just as YOU are a rationally thinking person - so are THEY! If it is indeed your premise that they are equal and not INFERIOR - why is it that so much of the current policy initiatives directed at them are attempt to PROVIDE FOR THEM so that they can reach a certain STANDARD OF LIVING that all Americans have a right to INSTEAD OF first placing in their minds THEIR OBLIGATIONS in the desire to have all people living in what some call "AmeriKKKa" to live to a given standard and then only providing them with the RAW RESOURCES that they need to EXPRESS THIS HIGH STANDARD VIA THEIR OWN ACTIONS rather than some EXTERNAL COMMITMENT?
It is clear to anyone who is HONEST that this is the problem.
The current corrective intervention attempts are only as good as the willingness for the EXTERNAL entity to FUND THEM. Instead they need more of an ORGANIC mechanism that protects them from the shifting winds of commitment by this EXTERNAL entity.

I have no problem with what he did NOR how he did it. There is very little that most judges have to justify within THEIR domain, the courtroom. Arbitrariness is a non-sequitur. Within his realm, a judge is usually given all the latitude he desires exclusive of causing injury.
I believe the judge when he says he wanted to keep his outburst "in-house", so to speak. He says he was thinking of his Grandmother's advice not to air dirty laundry in public. Don't act dumb, as you KNOW his meaning of public. Why no support from the "I don't care about white people" crowd? Or is this one of those cases where your personal anathema, political correctness, is warranted? Well, ain't that sweet, you DO care about white people.
The judge attempted to make a difference in the lives of some young people. Perhaps this was not the best time. When is? But he tried. And thankfully he talked to the people at risk, rather than depositing a luke-warm version of his "concerns" at one of the "foundations" or in some magazine or blog for the reading pleasure of a segment that he dare not offend.

Welfare as we know it was ended ten years ago, the rolls have been drastically cut and the requirements tightened during that time.
Seen any decrease in single mother births?

Thuyen,
Fair enough.
Do you have any real suggestions as to how we as a society are to bring the underclass into the mainstream OTHER than a bootstraps speech which is obviously ineffective?
elb
The canard of "black men abandoning families" is cheap and popular but it is not what's really happening.
You will be surprised how many young girls WANT to get pregnant and have babies because they want to be loved by someone or they feel that giving birth is a sign of womanhood.
It is the same reason why many young boys join gangs.
To fill the void left by the destruction of the family among the underclass.

Following the biblical mandate to help the poor. In other words, give to charity. Noblesse oblige.
God wants us to care for the poor, cloth the naked, care for the widows and the orphans.
At the same time, also make sure that those who are poor do not become complacent. Go get an education and try achieve potential as best as possible.

"The canard of "black men abandoning families" is cheap and popular but it is not what's really happening."
I think there is some truth to that. Not merely black men, but plenty of men I have seen on tv, regardless of race in America has done that.
And I mean men generically to include teenage guys, who see themselves as some popular stud in school, impregnant their girlfriends then leaving them.
It is a problem in society that is truly colorblind in my opinion.
More like a sin issue than a color issue.

That is where I believe a strong moral fabric will help the poor in the long run, along with good education, Those who practice abstinence won't have the problems with sexual diseases, unwanted pregnacies, etc. They won't have to feel burdened with children they are too poor at the moment to raise.
