Are you describing Christianity as it's actually practiced and understood by most of it's politically involved adherents today? Amongst these 'believers' the social gospel seems to take a back seat to Social Darwinism. Their interest in economic or social justice seems anemic, bordering on non-existent. I agree with your general point about the role religion could play in society, but the religion at the heart of the current great awakening isn't up to that role.

An excellent post. It seems to me, as it has for the past several years of my pentacostal recovery, that too often the image of something that is a concept is hijacked by people who do more harm than good.
One simply needs to look at the Falwells of the Christian sect and the Bin Ladens of the Islamic sect. It is frustrating to watch what was meant for good bring about such animosity.
I believe in God. I believe in Jesus. But that does not mean I think Christianity, in the Religious Right way of thinking, gets it right all of the time.
And yes, it is even more frustrating when progressives or liberals or whatever name we give ourselves, unequivacally bash on Christianity all while screaming of Christian intolerance. That, if I am correct, is what I call irony.
