Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle was like that for me. At the time my husband and I owned a store which was slowly draining our collective will to live, not to mention bringing us closer to bankruptcy with each passing day. Being able to escape to Kingsolver's quiet, wholesome, nurturing life was such a perfect respite from the daily hell of our store where every day we used ingredients which had been not only trucked across the nation, but then flown across an ocean as well (it was a franchise, so we didn't have the option of choosing local sources). I SO desperately wanted to be living the kind of life that she and her family were living. The closest I could come was a little cherry tomato plant and some basil and rosemary in pots, but reading her book made me feel like I was accomplishing some small measure of good!

Dreamybee, thank you so much for sharing your story. I love to hear about the power of books to bring comfort. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle has been on my to-be-read list for a very long time. I think I will move it up higher in the stack.

I, too, loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, but, like you, I don't live on a huge, rural farm. For that reason, I also loved PLENTY by Alisa Smith and JB MacKinnon. Same premise, 100 mile diet, but they are apartment dwellers in Vancouver. Kingsolver actually mentions them in her book...

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was def. the right book at the right time for me -- really well-written, absorbing, awesome characters, and a storyline that just propels you to the end. I was reluctant to start it, tired & cranky, but it hooked me from the get-go!
