The Boy on Top

Even the women do it corporately speaking... TB

Gravatar A tale of three managers who just couldn't say no?

When it comes to spending someone elses money, we're all just easy! TB

Gravatar In my limited experience a million quid has always been a meaningless sum. When I was an advertising copywriter in London I noticed that we always had trouble persuading clients to spend a couple of thousand on an ad., but when it came to laying out a million on a TV campaign it was easy to get them to dig into the corporate pocket. Why? Simply, I suspect, because they could relate to the smaller sum (they might even even have had that much in their bank accounts) and thus worry about it, but the million was beyond their personal experience and imagination (and in my case still is, unfortunately), so making it simple to commit to spending it. Which was great when you then had all the fun of making the TV commercial, as I did.

Its why Consultancies & Ad Agencies make such obscene fees. There is this weird ethic in corporate life that if its free its worthless. You have to pay a lot of money to make it feel valuable. TB

Gravatar I really like this sort of post because it reminds me what doing that stuff was like and why it was fun and absorbing and why I'm happy I'm not doing it any longer. And if there any many senior managers out there blogging about work, I haven't found them. So if you have another go at the poll, I'll be voting for work stuff as well as domestic'n'cooking.

You're right about the brand-renting questions being big. I used to be involved with a product sold under a rented brand, and my advice is don't do it unless you can be absolute bastards, commercially speaking; if you aren't that nasty, you won't be able to control it.

Consider the vote placed. When I started this I knew not many managers blog. As always, makes anonymity rather important though... TB

Gravatar I agree with Wendy L. I too work for a larg company, who (too often) spends on unnecessary items.

The nature of big organisations implies waste! TB
