I am glued to Big Brother and I find this incredibly interesting.
There is certainly bullying going on, and Jade, Jo and Danielle should be ashamed of themselves. High school bitches, the lot of them.
I do not think the bullying stems from racism however. I think that it evolved from their dislike/jealousy of Shilpa Shetty, and their own cultural ignorance. There have been some racist comments made but there have also been many more plain nasty comments made which I don't think are race related.
Jermaine Jackson referred to the Goodys as "white trash" at one point which has been conspicuously absent from the media reports.
The three girls are clearly not very intelligent, and I look forward to their evictions. It seems they will have no idea of the furore their nastiness has created, and it will be great to watch them get their rewards.
I personally would probably find Shilpa a little annoying to live with, but I think she has behaved with dignity and class, and will continue to do so.
As an aside, does anyone find it interesting that Big Brother are defending Jack's comment that was censored by saying "No, don't stress, Jack didn't call her a paki! He called her a cunt!"
Well thank fuck, that's ok then.
Was discussing the cunt comment with a collegue this morning. Hilarious really! I hadn't heard the Jermaine comment, that's another classic.
I tend to agree with you, its ignorant bullying with racist overtones. If they only knew that their precious celebrity "careers" have just tanked... TB

Ignorance, which doesn't need any intelligence or lack thereof.

Celeb Big brother reminds me of one of those old Andy Warhol movies. It's Art as well as compulsive telly.
Like you I spotted how Shilpa (and Jermaine) were left in the big house without consultation.
It's an education - they should show it in schools.

If you put together a show of that stupidity, full of that much stupidity, then certainally you are opening all kinds of doors for racism which is the ultimate form of ignorant stupidity.

Interesting. This brouhaha has made it to this side of the pond, with an artile in the New York Times today. We've had a surfeit of reality shows, and theyr're all about how mean you can be to others. I'd say I have chosen not to watch them, but, as we don't watch TV at all, that wouldn't be fair
The NYT article focused on how bullying is a big issue in the UK. Folks have mentioned it in passing on the UK blogs I frequent, but I hadn't ever realized what a big deal it is. The article also included a quote from soemone saying that the woman from India is an *actress*, and so some of her PITA-ness was part of an act, too.
I take it you and LL had a nice chat last night then? Or were you watching the show in stony silence?
There is definately some acting on all sides, but the extent of the bullying, with the racial overtones, is a very big thing here. Getting huge huge press, plus the Indian government is making formal diplomatic protests.
LL and I had some chats last night, and all is OK. TB

As you said....jealousy with rascist overtones.
I think I watched the last episode of the first ever Big Brother way back in 2000 or something like that...couldn't be bothered very much with things like that - although I WAS addicted to Survivor. Now there was a fascinating program.

I think the programme directors maybe made the mistake of mixing the usual C-list celebs that agree to do this show with someone a bit higher up the celeb ranking. I gues that's a bit racist in itself.
I did find it encouraging that according to the Beeb, OFCOM has had over 36,000 complaints.
Imperatrix - bullying is not really a big issue in the UK, it was just briefly a fashionable press thing about a year ago. Maybe this episode will revive it as a story.
According to an Indian friend of mine, who's an avid Bollywood fan, she is a 'B' list Bollywood star at best. They just have a better grade of 'B' list... TB

Being asain myself, im not overly keen to accuse people of racism. I think that the three witches are perhaps more then a little jealous of Shilpa's intelligence and general demeanour as she oozes class. I also think that they don't have a brain between them so they don't actually know that they are being racist.
Couldn't agree more. Isn't ignorance at the root of most racism anyway? TB
