Such a fab post....another little peek into English life.
Z also does this kind of post, which always makes me feel as if I am reading a rather refined novel.
Lovely.
The French don't do neighbourly get-togethers..not a very sociable bunch,I think.
Refined? Hah! You haven't seen that mob after a few bottles of wine... TB

Rather refined? Goodness me.
Your neighbours sound great. Isn't it funny though how one can really enjoy their company and yet not see them, except by chance, for months on end.
Is there any evidence for the satanic masses? Some evangelistic Christians have a real thing about witchcraft in our midst - our last Rector told me in all seriousness that there was a witch in the village casting malevolent spells. I found it hard to take seriously.
Re the church, bizarrely the answer is no, and yes. To really answer that I'd have to reveal much more closely where I live. Regardless the church in question has a fascinating history. Maybe someday I'll reveal more, its a hoot of a story. TB

wait until they charge you & LL extra for having those builders trucks rumbling down the road. Of course as a Civil Engineer I can assure that that roads are designed for lorries not cars as it's the lorries that do all the damage.
I don't supposed you'd want me for an expert witness......
Hah! If not for the fact that just about everyone on the drive has had some measure of builders in during the past years I'd worry about it. As it is, no one can reeeeealy complain... TB

Trees have a pretty firm grip on the earth, I do believe. You had me laughing, imagining someone walking down the path, the tree in question deciding it was time for a suicide mission against the pesky humans, and thudding down on the passerby *splat*!
Do you know, I had no idea that there were evangelicals in England. I thought that was a plague only we in the US had to deal with.
Z, you should have told your clergyman that you know a witch, and they're very nice people!
That's why the conversation about a single tree took a half hour. It became somewhat sureal as everyone convinced themselves that this 80 year old tree was about to delibrately kill someone.
Oh yes, there are evangelicals in England. Not the TV types, they haven't made it over yet, but the grass roots, pound the pavement for Jesus type. They are definately here.
I indeed know some very nice witches. They are generally lovely people. TB

80 years old? It's young! I've always heard, "a tree takes 50 years to grow, 50 years to live, and 50 years to die"
(we've got a huge pine tree that is getting on in that third chapter of its life. If your people really want to cut a tree down, send them my way, I'll let them cut mine down...)
What can I say, said tree is a Sycamore. They grow fast and deserve to die young. Overgrown weeds in my view... TB

I've only ever been in the company of my neighbour perhaps 4 times in 6 years. Once when her bathtub water was leaking through my ceiling; once when her boiler blew up and she need me to cut her water; once when I got a puppy and she wanted to play. I'm envious.
There are some I don't see much more than that, but they're still all lovely people (bar one couple we don't get along with, but hey). TB

Death to sycamores
Love to witches (assuming they don't do satanic rites in my church of course, which would be as welcome as them doing them in my drawing room)
Humourless evangelicals - darlings, get a life
Sycamores, large woody weeds. I hack them up at every opportunity, and they still keep going. TB
