Not sure what's worse, long lonely evenings in hotel dining and bed rooms or being hauled off for convivial evenings when you are tired.

Maybe you'll get an invite to a quiet dinner with the family in a colleague's home. That'd be good.

I don't mind the quiet evenings in hotel rooms, so long as I don't have too many of them. Being hauled off for dinner is fine, being hauled off to the disco is not. Thankfully, last night was just a very pleasent meal, then tonight will likely be just chez moi. TB

Ooooh, no, the quiet dinners in colleagues' homes are much worse, because you have to be specially polite and appreciative and conversational, which takes concentration, whereas in the group in the bar you can occasionally go glazed without anyone noticing.

Evenings in hotel bedrooms get taken up with room service and international phonecalls and sorting your email before you conk out.

I am such an introvert.

I can really like the quiet dinners in people's homes, so long as I know (and like) them. Cold invites with people I don't know are such a toss. At least if you're in a restaurant with people you don't know you can beg off after the main course. At someone's house you have to be polite. Brrr. TB
