Won't contracting out the services save Norwood something like $300,000?

No
The idea of contracting out the services has not even been discussed. What the City is looking at is having the county provide a lower level of service at a much lower cost. The County to my knowledge did not even come up with a cost to replace the Norwood Heath Department. I am not sure they have the capability or capacity to do all that is done by our health department.
In automobile terms the city is looking at replacing the family mini van with a motorcycle. It is a lot cheaper but will not do the same thing. When you put your wife and two kids on the back of the seat, don’t be surprised when they get hurt. But who care? It’s cheaper.
It is a shame the last City tax levy failed or we would not be in this spot. Oh, that right, it passed. What did they do with all that money?

That's what I've been asking...we passed a renewal of the tax levy. What will they spend the money on that should be spent on the Health Department? To where will those funds be DIVERTED?

Yeah speaking of that tax levy weren't we supposed to get new streets out of that deal? Anyone know anything about that?

There are a few streets that are getting slurry seal and it is a joke. They are doing a horrible job - no new curbs, no new aprons - Nothing but a top coat that will last a few months or until the first good snow then we will be back to pothole heaven.
As for what they will do with the savings - maybe they will have more take home cars for employees, raise their salaries or do something that will benefit only those that work for the city. It is against city code to do something that actually would benefit the ENTIRE city.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
Slurry seal?
Didn't Norwood City Council and the Mayor learn from the 1970s what a joke slurry seal is? It's a temporary "coat" that will come off later.
IT'S NOT A STREET RESURFACING.
When Council's "Streets and Infrastructure" of July 31st aired, where they dragged out the consultant
to give his doublespeak on the matter....the plan was discussed to do a few streets now...and a few streets later (2009).
To me, Council appeared to be
dragging their heels, as many streets needed true resurfacing YESTERDAY, and their plan is too few streets and "not soon enough". They've been collecting tax levy renewal money since January. Where is that money going?
However....I said, "Well at least there will be streets resurfaced in the proper manner, asphalt properly removed down to the base, and new streets built with curbs.
Slurry Seal? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

No new curbs, no new aprons, no streets taken down to the bare surface. The other half of Hopkins is being done right now and it is funny because CHUNKS of curb lay in the street where cars and what not have bumped into them. There is also trash that I'm sure will not be picked up before the final coat, but just slurry sealed over. I would just like to know why they are wasting our money and doing something that looks so half baked. The first half of Hopkins that was done earlier this year already looks terrible and they didn't even blend it nicely to the cross secting streets.

I have a vague recollection of a discussion some time back on council floor when some council members said slurry seal ain't all that bad. Maybe it's been improved over the years so it lasts longer?

All this is really interesting but how is it going to help the Health Department?

The slurry seal they put on streets in the 70s and 80s was a JOKE.
It's debatable whether the technology has improved on it.
How about a complete restoration of the street?
Now there is a unique concept....
