I hope these poor abused animals find homes and their owner is located and prosecuted.

I support adoption of stray and adopted animals.

However, I have a BIG problem with the Hamilton County S.P.C.A.

Many years ago I bought a kitten from the Colerain SPCA main shelter.
Two days later it died. I discovered it had feline distemper, treatable via innocuations, but that the SPCA did NOT administer all shots it needed. It broke my heart.

I went to the shelter & discovered all kittens were housed in the same "pen", and pointed out to the Staff most of the other kittens probably also had the distemper - since feline distemper is contagious.

They tried to shoo me out the door. I wouldn't leave and asked to see the Director. I was told "he isn't having a good day", whereupon I told the worker I wasn't having a good day either...

I advised the Director about my heart-wrenching experience and the fact there were families looking at kittens RIGHT THEN, who probably would have their pet die within a few days. He seemed "inconvenienced" by my complaint. When I reminded him they advertised animals as healthy, he stated, "Healthy to the best of our knowledge"......to which I replied,
"That's not what your advertising says".

He got up and tried to show me door but I wasn't ready to leave.
He threatened to call the police, at which point I showed him my police badge and ID and advised him I was a taxpayer and wasn't finished with my complaints.

I told him the response by the SPCA to Norwood was terrible and had been for some time. He asked "How long?". I told him at least the 10 years I had been on the force their response time to Norwood was pathetic, that it takes DAYS (if they ever show up at all) on dogs running at large.

I told him I would NEVER, EVER encourage any citizen to call the SPCA when they find a lost or abandoned animal without an I.D. tag -instead, I would encourage folks to find a good home on their own - even at a small expense - rather than call the SPCA.

And that is what I have been doing for the last 20 years.

That's a really disturbing story, though I did enjoy part where you whipped out your badge.

My favorite shelter is the no-kill Save the Animals Foundation on Red Bank Rd:
http://www.stafnj.org/ If you adopt a cat or a dog there and down the road you can't take care of it for some reason, they ask you to bring the animal back because it has a home there for life if it isn't readopted. I will never go anywhere else if I'm in the market for a new family member from the animal kingdom.

I have to agree with the last poster - S.T.A.F. is very good. We got a wonderful pet from there a few years ago.
