The open source commmunity did not rally resources and expertise to create Linux. Linux started as one man's project with supposedly little ambition of growing as it has.

A thought that occours to me is that it's much easier to replace the back-end (SMTP servers) than the front-end (all the clients). The front-end could still POP mail via POP3 and IMAP servers, but the backend could be anything. An SMTP extension, or some other crazy thing. No clients need notice.
I agree fully though, classic SMTP is no longer viable.
